"Can we get more red healers in Felucca?"

Yes! We had a bit of extra space since we rearranged the schedule for this publish, so we've tweaked the spawn rate for Priests of Mondain in Felucca upwards - specifically, they should spawn more often around moongates.

--

"Why did I get a suspension for having a link to a website in my profile?"

First, the relevent bit from the Rules of Conduct:

"With the exception of the sale of in-game items for in-game items or services, you may not market, promote or advertise anything, or make any other form of solicitation (including pyramid schemes and chain letters) through the Ultima Online service or Ultima Online web site."

This isn’t a blanket ban on links - links to guild websites may be just fine, for example - but most sites advertise, promote, or market something - even if it’s just running banner ads. Your safest bet is to avoid bringing the outside world into UO - if you have a website that’s UO-related (and not entirely about making someone a profit) - by all means submit it for inclusion in the fansite section of the FoF! (Remember, email jdalberg AT ea DOT com, and I'm happy to take guild recruitment ads and stuff too. Just make sure you proofread your copy, because I will only give it a quick once-over when I post it!)

Thieves' Guild Bug Update

While we still haven't actually reproduced the bug, we found a bit of related code that definitely wasn't supposed to be there and we're reverting it out in Publish 56 - for everyone having trouble joining the guild, we eagerly await your reports once this publish goes live.

QA Request of the Week

QA has seen some complaints that plants don't always behave as intended - sometimes they lose health or die suddenly even when they're being properly taken care of - and they would love to see some detailed reports from people who've experienced the problem. Please include things like what the expected result was, what the actual result was, what kind of seed was used, whether fertile dirt was used, and as many other details as could possibly be relevant. Thanks!

What's To Come:

We're finalizing all the goodness for next week's Town Hall, and working hard at getting Publish 55 to you shortly thereafter. If you're remotely in range of Seattle, I strongly advise you to show up!

Jeremy, not to put too fine a point on it, but that's really sort of an unacceptable stance on people putting URLs in their profiles, not to mention putting their URLs in their guild profiles. In addition, just how does this stance affect telling someone to visit a URL in game?

I mean, let's take the obvious example -- having a link to an informational website that also has a single page dedicated to raising money for that site through the sale of items. If 99.99% of the site is devoted to information, it's illegal to mention simply because it's a fansite and asks its fans to help keep it running?

Are banner ads REALLY a qualifying factor? Because really, I want your GM staff suspended from work immediately, because I've been told by them on numerous occasions to visit uo.stratics.com -- and they're definitely showing banner ads so that they can keep this service running.

I guess it comes down to this: I think we all understand the issues with particular sites such as shopping sites that are clearly kept up to date through illegal mechanics that violate the spirit of UO (though arguement could be made that UO really should find a way to implement this functionality in-game, I understand that just because something should be available doesn't mean circumventing the rules is the way to do it).

However, the biggest issue is that rather than taking the time to look at the intent of what someone's got going on, there's this silly semi-blanket rule. Yeah, someone's standing at Brit Bank spamming a URL to his ebay auction, that's clear. Someone else says "Go visit www.uoguide.com to look find info on this quest," by your statement above, that's technically a violation. And from where I sit, that's inappropriate.

So, my request of the powers that be over at Mythic is this: Sit down and forumulate a fair and acceptable policy regarding this which includes that the intent of something must be taken into consideration. Wide-berth rules are always bad when they catch the innocent in their nets.

I'm not really wild about this wording ... I know you're trying to avoid saying that any old website can have a guild name slapped on it and claim to be acceptable, but that "may" is disturbingly ambiguous for the more skittish amongst us.

It's sad that almost every week on FoF there is a site link that bluntly states on front page " buy codes and uo stuff" and also carries banners from non- EA sites that sell Uo stuff and gold. There for these sites are making Real life money off of FoF's free advertisement of Them. But the average Joe can get banned for telling some one to go to "www. blah bal blah.com" to look up a quest. Don't care who you are .. it's just not right.

So we can no longer give ICQ, Ventrilo teamspeak and the other communication sites?

This sounds like a baud ban to me.

Lets say we are just talking about none-UO related stuff and i give a link to a news site, youtube or something. Can I be in trouble for that now?

Personally I believe you went over board giving a suspension to JC for advertising UOguide, it is a great site.

I have to agree here whole heartedly, give one person (JC) a suspension, yet YOU can advertise a link in your FOF for someone else that has links for items/gold for RL cash... Yes a lil consistency would be nice. Guess it just depends on WHO ya are :lame:, tis sad.

- It seems to have been consistent to me...

When in-game think of it as RPing within a fantasy world; to break that little code of a rule is generally a no-no.

Granted, we may feel discouraged from sharing some info. about out-of-game UO while in-game, but I have never had a problem with it (of course I think Stratics is about all I have ever 'advertised' or shared in-game and, oh my, they have banner ads).

When talking of FoF & uo.com (out-of-game stuff) then they can promote some reality (I'm almost positive uoguide has been mentioned in a FoF. I'm quite sure Stratics would be mentioned often too, if they wanted to submit some activities that relate to UO).

Let's face the facts: There were some nefarious websites being passed around and some despicable actions taken by 'players' in-game, and so we all have to face the consequences of the rules, no matter how honorable our actions may be.
Cheaters/wannabe hacks/punks can surely ruin things for everyone else; as we are all a part of this same thing, this UO. Fact.

I got the answer I needed, Don't break ToS and you can display the websites, so as long as your site does not contain any material that is against TOS then you should be fine.

HA HA so true. The FoF has a link to UOSTOCK. Thats hilarious.

Jeremy - thank goodness you aren't trying to run for some sort of office because your teams policies are so crooked and half baked you wouldn't get a vote.

If it weren't so sad I'd have a good laugh over it.

Come to the Seattle Town Hall? Why? Just so we can mock your innane policies and ineptitude at trying to catch cheaters?

Theoretically I could make a UOGuide guild and then link to it. Suddenly UOGuide becomes a legal site to promote in-game by Jeremy's wording.

This so called "policy" needs to be actually worked out and posted. Having one where you can only link certain types of websites is a horrible idea because people are now going to make sure their websites are classified as ones for a guild. You will see a Gold-Sellers-R-US Guild.

Gold sellers are also going to step up their efforts to get advertising on popular guild websites. We have been contacted several times about ours, I'm sure the new offers will be coming next week.

wrong because if such sites still link or advertise the selling of in game items for real money they are breaking TOS and thus not acceptable urls.

Why? You would be in-game marketing, promoting, and advertising something, which is against the rules. It seems a by-law allows for guilds and other harmless (no extremist banner ads / non-profit / non-solicitous) sites. But on the point, are not all websites solicitous, at least in some form? Wicked web weave indeed.

I had a few plants die for me in the first days of their growing. I never had that happen before. I had growen alot of plants for resources in the past. I can't remember what kind it was that died this time but I was mostly grown plants for resources and a few normal colors deco plants (old kind)
Now I did not complain, that do happen to RL plants too and I would like it to stay that way. You should have some risk when you grow plants, even if it's a rare seed or a seed you payed alot gold to get.

Find the bug but don't fix it :lick:

Guys, put down the pitchforks.

Granted, while Jeremy is not a very good messenger, she is the messenger nonetheless.

She can't change the ads on the UO site, that would require someone a bit higher up the food chain to make that decision.

She simply reports things she is told by the UO team, which obviously in a presumably 40 hour work week is often less than five questions worth. So let her be regarding the ads. Sheesh.

Does this mean that they will introduce Publish 55 into all the production shards shortly after the next week's town hall meeting, that is, shortly after 30th. August? If it is the case, we should have at latest early in the next week Pub 55 on TC and in the middle of the week it should be introduced into Origin. Then, could we have enough time to test the change of ROT in the hardcore shard rule set on TC?

Or, does this mean that we will have Pub 55 on TC shortly after THM?

Thieves' Guild bug is about THE most interesting bug people have reported for a whole week?? I don't believe it is so urgent it deserves a place in the FOF, there's not like a long row of people waiting for a fix outside their local Thieves' Guild. But okay I'll be fair, it's SOMETHING. But this "something" could be on the News section, not on FOF is my point. :coco:

And linking to web-sites on your profile... Seriously who didn't REALLY know?? What, I was the only one to take it for granted that you cannot advertise in-game like that...? Weren't you all paying attention last time this was mentioned and had to turn it into a FOF question?

right , how can we now put guild sites in our guild roster spot where it goes ?
that still doesn't help recruiting, and using the fan thing and 5 on friday for announcing guild spam is going to suck, just bannish LLTS from spamming us and maybe it won't be so terriable i suppose.

i agree 200% stratic's is mentioned many many times by GM's yet it has banner ad's and stuff for sale.

so now we can't tell people to refereance stratic's or uoguide ? thats crappy.

so gathering from this EA/Mythic has changed there stance on selling things for cash. cool
now remove the account transfer service please as this promotes people to sell accounts for cash.

the only way to eliminate the selling of items for cash would be to make everything character/account bound. and i meen everything. but then people would sell accounts, unless you make them non transferable..

also there is a QA team to do this stuff, as it stands now, if a person is 'trying' something and something 'bad' happens like ohh a dupe.. then they get in trouble, but a QA team memeber more than likly will not. (hears of people getting banned because they paged a GM to come help them, or when they report a bug)

Jeremy, I'm not picking on you, Conner got that one exactly right earlier. While hard for many of us to believe - I recently have actualy run into several legitimate newer players (not the Melissa type) while seeking turn-ins in anti-virtue dungeons. Most have questions, some have quite a few questions. I can either spend all night answering them, or provide links with helpful information. I tend to offer UOGuide and Stratics as sources to aid in understanding template decisions, complexities within the game, and community discussion. By the definition you have provided, I can be suspended for doing this. I've done this for 11 years, and prior to the last couple weeks, had no idea that anyone would consider this a violation of TOS, or for that matter the "wrong" thing to do. Sure, I can answer questions all night long, voiding my most valuable commodity - time. Or I can turn a blind eye, not the way to welcome someone into our gaming world. Or I can risk a suspension by providing valuable links to aid them in their future adventures. Both referenced sites have some mechanism to offset operationg costs, both therefore are in violation of the letter of the law per the EA legal department. Neither violate the spirit of that law. This one really seems a "no-brainer," please have the powers that be relook this ASAP.

I look at it more as an attempt to clean up the culture of UO which has allowed some unpleasant behaviours to become too deeply embedded. The trouble is that the weeding requires a backhoe more than a trowel if it's going to make a difference so some flowers are getting swept up in the digging too.

For clarification, I cannot list my website in my profile (let's call it floralovesplants.com) if I have even one link on the page with say an ultra rare white date palm for sale for RL money, correct? But, if I simply have gardening stuff on my page with a link to ANOTHER site who sells the palm for RL money it's okay? Is it also okay to have my site promoted officially by EA/Mythic and to drop books all over the place to my site. Since, that particular site ISN'T doing the selling?

Been trying to put my finger on what bothered me about the title of this week's FoF, and the above kinda hits it..... for me, in order to anticipate something, whether with dread or awe, there needs to be a some subtle hints, a dropped phrase, perhaps some chiming in when someone comes close to the truth. I don't need blatant, but a little bit of wondering ("Is that what they mean?") during discussions about what our collective future may hold in store, prompted by some tiny tidbit, other than "Wait for it!" would have me anticipating, yes.

so far, I don't think I am

Stop complaining, something EPIC is going to happen soon. :danceb:
An epic announcement about events happening in September...

Hmmm... <SPECULATION>

WAR being moved up to release in September (when I could have sworn it was susposed to release in Novemember) couldn't possibly have anything to do with this.

As they said, "if you make any town hall make this one". I wonder if that has anything to do with this probably being the last one as they shut off the lights to spend all their efforts on WAR.

I tend to offer UOGuide and Stratics as sources to aid in understanding template decisions, complexities within the game, and community discussion. By the definition you have provided, I can be suspended for doing this.
I agree..

I see no reason why UOguide can not make a few bucks using a banner or something to keep his site operating.

EA shouldn't be in the business to police the entire Internet from their game.

Should make a Sept release, after reading about how much planned content and races was cut out out of it so it could make it on time... EA/Mythic releasing something in a rush to beat a deadline, and leaving parts of it out to do so, Who woulda thunkit!!

- It might be fun then to read the interview, that Jeremy mentioned in the FoF, of Cal, on UOForums.com.

LOL

Then subtle doesnt work for me, I'm too dense to catch it I guess.
Main thing I get out of that interview, (which is an old one btw) is that we will see big things Labor Day.
Thats "soon" as in a week from now...
But at the same time we are being told the publishes (55 and 56) wont be out for another 2 weeks or so.

Someone tell me what I'm missing here LOL:coco:

- Okay there is a lot to surmise from his interview, by my thinking.

But for starters, why not read what he said before his final smiley face (not the tongue waggin' face ;)). As well, consider his replies regarding UO marketing.
Btw, thanks for the interview Adam & UOForums community. I look forward to TGO's as well.

~ 6 days out.

Again, I grumble at the fact that the next Town Hall is right here in Seattle, mere minutes from my house... on my sixteenth wedding anniversary.

I hope someone posts a really good writeup, like the one from the last Town Hall! I wanna know what the big announcements are!

And you're not going? I would be! =D And I'm 100% positive my husband wouldn't complain - in fact if I told him I wasnt going because it was our anniversary, he'd think there was something wrong with me =P Make it part of your celebration ;)

Just look at how outdated the update window is on log in. Hell new players get a great impression before stepping foot into Sosaria. It's a sad day when doing yardwork looks as fun as playing UO. I miss when UO trumped eating and bathing. I have to side with those that say their next addiction will never carry the EA lable.
