I have been playing this game for years however i have never done fishing or had a fisherman. Is it worth it? and if so what is the best template for them? I'm so lost when it comes to it. Do you need a support char to do other things?

I find the fisherman to be a fun solo char. A very popular fishing template would be something like:

Fishing
Cooking (complimentary, fishsteaks and all)
Archery or magery ( to kill serpents later)
Tactics or Eval (for the damage increase)

then depending on the your template Mage route, or Fighter route, round your skills out with Med and maybe FOcus or someother fun skills, or Chiv, Focus and maybe Anat and Healing for a fighter type.

You can set up UO assits macros to save on the carpel tunnel and just rake in the fish and footware. Let the fish stack up on your deck and once in a while cut em into fishsteaks.

Make sure you follow the training guide, which was something like fish from shore till about 36 or so, then head for semi deep water, server lines in the ocean are best, up to about 60, then plain old deep water. I am sure I am off on the numbers, it has been a long time since I built a fisher.

But, Have fun!

Fishing is one of my favorite activities in this game. Haven't done it lately, but I loved my fisherman back in the day. When I came back to the game, a fisherman was the very first character I started.

Yes, if you have time and enjoy to sail a bit thru the seas of Sosaria. Yes if you don't bother about the time necessary to gm'ed it. Yes if you're curious about what you will find next. And an extra yes if you are in need of shoes.

No, if you just build it up for finding resources - of which white pearls are the most worthy ones. Compared to the time you spend on water you find very few. Since the latest publish with the turn-ins fishing nets (and so-called pre-chest-loot) are much more valuable.

You can fit fishing in to almost every profile. If you don't lift treasures by fishing nets or MIB's (this will come later anyway), you just have to care about the few sea serpents or the rare water eles. Therefore you should be able to deliver distant damage like archer or mages as Nyses mentioned. But with a tamer it works very good to.

Am I correct in understanding that a pillow fished up is worth 2.5 times as much as the SOS itself would be??

I also find fisherman (woman for me) to be one of the most fun characters to play. I'm not sure why, because it can be boring in comparison to some others. My fisherwoman is my archer and I like to play her when I'm watching TV. They go together well. The recent turn-ins are a major bonus right now; I had a million fished up maps sitting around. I also never thought I would be grateful to fish up barrel staves.

Yep - even the CHEST can be turned in, once empty, for 250 points as well. Not to mention the bones, the body parts, the shells, the paintings, etc.

A person would be foolish to turn in SOS, instead of bringing them up for the loot, as at worst, they'll get 1000 gold, some gems, regs and junk to sell, AND a chest that is worth 2.5 times what the SOS would have been worth.

At best, well, I've gotten 15 items and the chest, with the chest being a level 3 (3000 gold, and a LOT of gems), before.

I made a fisher a bit ago because I hadn't made one yet as well. Spring Cleaning has made that character a lot more useful, but SOS bottles are still worth doing at other times. The normal gems alone are useful if you have a tinker that makes magical jewelry (20 of each normal gem per attempt). You get more from an SOS chest than from a treasure map chest without the monster spawn. White pearls are nice, but they aren't common. I also think there is a bonus to getting an artifact from a leviathan with a fisher, but this could just be a rumor.

Fishing used to be one of the more profitable professions back in the day, I remember actually jumping up and down when I found a Silver Kantana of Vanq one day. I sold that for close to 10M gold, which was huge amount of gold back then.

I still enjoy fishing though, its relaxing and its also a good way to find decent jewelry and I use alot of the magic wands for my Tamer and Mage. You can also use the scrolls to help you fill up books to sell.

Too bad it wasn't supremely accurate and indestructible on top of that, you could've bought your own shard with it. :p

One thing I have been wondering is if luck effects the chests you fish up from mibs?:coco:

My fishergirl is:

7 x GM

Fishing
Magery
Med
Eval
Cartography
Lockpicking
Lumberjacking

She doubles as my T-Hunter and Lumberjack.

Love playing her, love fishing, and she gets a lot of use. She has no problem soloing serps, water eles. Fishing can be lucrative with Ancient Sos's, followed by leviathon kills, you need a gm fisher to toss a fabled net. So far I have had 2 seahorses and 1 ghost anchor from fabled nets, however, I have tossed a LOT of them. Most give junk artis, and 4/5ths of the time no arti at all, so it is not for the impatient.

Don't pickup fishing just for White Pearls. You can make enough gold at just about anything else to buy 2 Pearls in the time it takes to fish up 1!

As long as you have a SoulStone you can move Fishing around to all your chars. See what works best for you. I've recently been doing MIBs with with a full blown Tamer/Peacer with a Greater Drag. Talk about over-kill!

Fishing requires absolutely no other support skills. But need defense & a ranged offense. By and large your enemies are Water Els, Sea Serps and Deep Sea Serps. If you start throwing fishing nets, things get really interesting but you a long way from there!

Get a large ship...easier to avoid your attackers.

Before you board your ship, set up a full set of ship macros: Forward, Backward, Turn Right/Left, Move Right/Left, Stop, etc. I use the numlocked keypad. I remember when I first started fishing...I was typing out the commands!?!?!?

Good Fishing
