Few Questions about Taming

Yes, I finally gave in.

What determines when a pet will attack someone? My new character is blue, and my pet refuses to attack blue players. So I do the guarding trick. When I turn red will the pet then attack blue players?

Tonight, my pet refused to attack a red player. It was wonderfully happy, so I don't understand why.

is there a list of people pets will and wont attack?

He will not attack anyone in the same faction.

He will attack ANYONE else. If you command him to.

If a pet is guarding anyone you flag on or flags on you...they attack

But he wont attack ANYONE else. He won't attack blues. He attacks enemy players on command. I have to tell him to guard me and then hit the blue for him to begin attacking the blue character.

On the pet control chance calculator I'm at 99% control for a dread warhorse.

I just have never played a tamer in pvp, and these may be stupid questions.

My pets will attack anyone i tell them to everytime, all the time. Im not in factions and never have a problem flagging on them, as such i can no longer comment on what might be wrong.

Actually I've noticed this issue lately with some of my smaller pets not listening when i tell them to attack dragons and such... It seems random... but its quite frustrating specially with my packs caus if they don't all listen and trust me they should I'm well above whats needed to control them but if they don't all attack they don't kill it fast enough to keep from getting damaged... they out right refuse... and this is vs monsters mind you... I'll do some more testing....

Some pets appear to be picky about someone else standing in their space. It could be that if you're using a pack of critters and use an "all attack" command, they ALL only see one spot to get to their intended victim and their group-think logic says "no can do" because A will be stepping on B who will be stepping on C who will be stepping on D who will be stepping on E.

I could, however, just be making all that up and all you need is a new box of Q-Tips to clean their ears out.

Yeah its just a dread warhorse. I just don't see the randomness in it. It attacks all reds I tell it too, but then it wouldn't attack that one? I tried three times to give it an all kill command. The pet was wonderfully happy too.

Then the next red that night, it attacked him immediately upon my command.

I've found expecialy with the dread warhorse if it does not have line of sight of the target i.e standing behind your character it will refuse to attack. What I do is side step then give the attack command and usually all is well.

I know i said this before but was that red in the same faction as you??

They implemented a no pet attack rule type thing in factions not long ago. Basically faction pets will not attack the same faction.

I rather think they introduced a new bug instead of deliberately creating a new rule.

No I have not joined factions yet. I am waiting for the dread to be fully trained. It was just a random red.

Few questions for you...

What's your animal taming/lore skill at?

Is there any message coming up on your screen or just a refused command?

Was the target openly visible to the pet, i.e., nothing in the way that might have caused a line of sight issue?

I'm presuming you said "all kill" and targeted the guy's health bar. If you used macros involving targets, what were they?

Sorry to just ask questions, it's just easier to diagnose problems when you know exactly what's going on.

I usually pre cast explo. Then I run up and target him. Then I dismount and hit my all kill macro and down scroll to select last target.

I dont believe there were any line of sight issues. The problem hasnt happened since. My taming is 105 and my lore is 115 which is supposed to be 99% on Pet Control Chance Calculator.

Ok, I quickly put your skills into the UOCraft and Noxin's calculators to see what your control would be. UOCraft came up with 99% while Noxin's hit 64%. So I got the calculator out to double check ;)

This is the calculation that Noxin's calculator does, which is bringing up the figures I'm getting manually.

70 + ((28 * (105 - 107.1)) + (6 * (115 - 107.1)) / 2) = 64.3 %

There's a longer explanation of how to work it all out here.

The problem is that your taming is below the min taming requirement of a dread (107.1) and it's pulling down your control. Once you hit 107.1 with your taming you should be getting control of 93%.

Try with some taming skill jewellery taking you to 107.1 or above and see what happens.

Thank you. That was a very helpful post. :)

I guess I'll start working that taming up to 107.1.
