Returning player here. Does escorting NPC's still give you fame? It says I've gained in compassion. Is that the same thing?

The amount of fame you recieve from an escort quest, at least the ones found in towns, is fairly small and will dwindle down to nothing as your fame rises.
Compassion is a Virtue. Gaining in it allows you to resurrect people with more hit points via imagery, chivalry or bandages. The higher your path in Compassion, the more hit points restored.

Ohh thank you. I’d like to raise my scribe/alchemist’s fame, but it sounds like she’ll have to fill a lot of BODs.
Bods are an excellent source of fame for crafters.
If you can gate, you could rescue the prisoner from the cell in the second level of the orc mine. It gives more fame and Compassion than normal escorts. Just mark a rune in the cell as it can be a somewhat perilous journey for a squishy crafter.

Donning an orc mask will do wonders for that. I used to mine in there, if you wear an orc mask, the stupid orcs will think you're one of them and leave you alone. Grunting now and then doesn't hurt either
