I was bored one night...so I grabbed my calculator and started adding up my years, number of accounts over the years, and times it all by my monthly subscription...and just about fell out of my chair.

How much you wager that YOU'VE spent over the years? And no, I don't want to hear from the cheaters and dupers about how much money UO MADE them.

2 accounts... 10 years on each... thats about 2 thousand dollars.... total.

Since I've never bought/sold anything in game for cash or owned any other accounts... this is by far cheapest hobby, I've ever had.

pixels aren't important to me... its the experiences, relationships and memories that matter the most...

btw, your my neighbor on siege Chad. =D

haven't had a chance to properly "introduce" myself =D one day tho!

I guess, judging from Black Rains post, and because I'm too lazy to figure it out, that I have spent $6,000 over the past 10 yrs on UO.

It is a lot of money, but I think it was worth it. Before I got married 13 yrs ago, I would spend my money in illegal gambling houses. Sometimes I would drop $300 in 1 night, and would go to these places often 5 times a week. I would also spend a lot dropping quarters in video games in bowling alleys and gaming parlors.

So UO keeps me at home, and out of trouble, and might even be saving me a little money.

2acc x 7 yrs x 12 mo x $10 = $1680 in subscription
+
2x each expansion (except one, forgot which) say 30 x 6? = 360_ 420

ball park $2100

1pack a day(cigarettes) averaged at low $2
$2 x 365 x 7yrs =minimum $5110

*shrugs*
My coffee habit is easily twice those combined

Want something that'll make your jaw drop?
(used to be, and would be a nice addition, used to be you could query the GM for total hours logged in account)
convert the gross number into college credit hours ... assuming a "C" ....

playing the game and posting on the forums ...
Instead ... you could have had
various flavors and colors of
college degrees ....

Slackers !!...

All is personal perspective of worth and value

oh yes, I have. I've "only" spent just over $1000 up to this point ... going forward, 4 accounts + upgrades/tokens (which quietly add up) is budgetted at $650/yr .

It feels like a huge amount but when I took a break for a few months and did the math, I discovered that I was spending more on entertainment and eating out when I wasn't playing UO than the subscriptions had been costing me. So ironically enough, one of the reasons to come back was that overall it is saving me money to be here.

It all depends on how you look at things. For me UO is a nice escape from my sometimes hectic crazy rl job and world.

As I have explained to my wife of 10 years....
I had UO before I had her...
UO is cheaper than her....
UO is cheaper than going to the bars/casino
UO is alot cheaper than getting a DUI at said bars/casino
the list could go on for a long time..........

1 account 10 + years.........every upgrade
1 account 9+ years............every upgrade
3 accounts 4+years............every upgrade
Total price...Several thousand dollars

Friendships built over 10+ years even if they are just over the net
....... Priceless

Anything will add up when you look at how much was spent on it, over time.

I like to think about it this way...

I could have one night of entertainment a month, which is usually more than $14. Movies, Dinner, Drinks; each of them, separately, can easily top $14 in a night.

... or ...

I could have a whole month of entertainment, in UO, for less than $14.

eh, for now, I choose option #2.

I've spent about 8 years, at $10 a month for the first 5, so $600, then ~$19 a month for the last 3 so another $680 so call it about $1280.
+ another $120 or so for expansions etc = $1400 roughly.

That's given me thousands of hours of play in game, many more if i'd actually played more.

Compare that to the cost of my computers over that period of time, my internet connection at about £20/$40 a month, or my DVD collection*, or even the Games Workshop models I started buying a couple of years ago and it puts UO's cost in it's place.

Online subscription games are actually one of the cheapest forms of modern entertainment if you play them for more than a few hours a month.

*It's rather scary to look at my collection list, especially when I look at the total paid.

actually I have three degrees thank you.

Hey ... if your happy with that many ... good for ya! ...
just saying ...

If ya coulda had more ... wouldn't necessarily have made you any better ... happier ...
You coulda spent your UO time/money ... on something else ...
gotten more of something else ...
*shrugs*

Your three degrees ... could have helped you figure that out

@ Sneaky Que, Cogniac (below this edit)
Sorry ...should have better emphasized ...AVERAGED OUT over 40 years .... calculated just the last seven "on/with Lifetime average"
started at 35c a pack ... back in the day ...
almost didn't buy the last pack (that I actually was in the convienience store to buy ... $5.60)
but ... since I was out ... and wanted one ... too far to go back home and resupply ... "ouch! ... okay"

Yep ... every time the price went up a quarter ... "time to quit" I'd say ...
and didn't .... Coffee STILL is my greatest outlay

All in all ... nicotine and caffeine are my only TWO vices ...
Barring a change in laws ...
Likely to end only at the edge of my grave ...
(Likely, in that : My final request, for a pack, a lighter, and a "cup to go" ... Wont be complied with ... and NOT be put in the furnace with me)
*sigh*
Not much I can do about that ...

About 5K in subscription fees.
Not including upgrades and anniversary packs, name changes and other odds and ends.

I've probably spent at least 2000. I don't remember how long I've had certain accounts, and there are expansions, and temporary accounts, and so on. The funny thing is that its still pretty cheap. For example, other hobby costs:

Comic books cost $3-4 each, and I have friends that spend 10-20 a week on the hobby for a few hours of reading. That's $40-80 a month, more than UO.

Tabletop RPGs cost for the books ($20-50 around), dice ($2 to limitless for crazy gem dice), minatures, battlemats, etc. It is possible to spend very little for this hobby, but usually people really into RPGs buy a few books a month which already costs more than UO.

Collectible card games are crazy expensive. Expensive singles (look up mox if you don't believe me), packs and boxes of new sets ($4.00 for 15 card packs with boxes being ~32 packs), and tournament costs (~$20-30 for an afternoon). Being a casual player costs more than UO.

I chose those examples since I know people who have complained about their costs, but there are very few cheap hobbies.

Scarry but I know I've dropped well over 10k.... But I don't drink, nor smoke... not into the bar sceene... very rarely go to the movies... Don't much care for tv... So UO IS my entire entertainment budget... though if I worked up the cost of my caffeine habit.... ...... er.... let me see.... if we average it out...
2 soda's most days..... one bought at work at 1 dollar a bottle ..... 1 can at home out of a case.. at about .50 cents a can... and then add in a bit for days off when I tend to drink alot more.... say an extra 4 cans a week.... making a total of 18 soda's a week average of say 60 cents per..... over the last 8 years I've played UO..... thats 10.80 a week..... 561.60 a year.... 4,492.8 dollars over the last 8 years... I do so love math... course this doesn't include the pop I buy out or for my kids. Likely I've spent almost as much on just soda alone... facinating.... Really makes you see that UO is good reasonable entertainment value.

No, never counted.

It's mostly been worth it though. This is mostly a fun game.

The question is, how much of the money you spent on UO was spent during the last 3 years'(just to be more than fair) expansions, cheat-fest, Dev Team failures, dissappointments, failure to do what they said, unbalanced expansion skills and items, KR crap and bugs....??

'Cuz yeah.. SOME OF IT was MORE THAN WORTH IT, some was so-so... but the last 2-3 years we're paying FOR NOTHING.

THAT'S THE SCARY MATHS. I include myself in this and certainly am not proud having done so simply out of habbit. But I have stopped playing now at last.

I've made more money than I've spent, so its all good.

1 year = about 160 bucks 1 account.
10 years= 1600 bucks. A few extras on upgrades/items, maybe 2k. Some years maybe a extra or other accounts. maybe 3k total over 10 years.

Heck, I made more than 3k just in the few early years being a trader on catskills. So overall, i'm probably set for another 10 years profit wise.
