11/27/2018 – Despite how elusive the Necromancers of Yew had proven to be, the rangers had yet one last lead to follow – the mysterious, locked portal found within the necromancers’ painting. To solve the mystery Shamino requested assistance from Castle Blackthorn, and the rangers found none other than Magister Rainard within, who was already hard at work unraveling the enigma. The portal, Rainard claimed, was “locked” through a cross-dimensional shift – which is to say, its two sides were not aligned. Rainard was able to correct this issue through an advanced ritual which permitted the rangers to enter the portal. Yet, the other side of the portal was even more unexpected.
Finding themselves on a strange, otherworldly path which seemed to course through a twinkling darkness, the rangers encountered a band of men whose air seemed familiar with them. Leading these men, curiously, was Rufus, the headmaster of the Hand of Death. In a brief exchange, Rufus admitted to working for the necromancers, who had paid him to guard the path while they did “important work”. The Hand of Death fighters descended upon the rangers but were ultimately defeated after a challenging battle. Before Rufus himself could be fought, however, he managed to escape through one of the mysterious doors with a set of keys he possessed. Magister Rainard rejoined the rangers shortly thereafter, and explained the place they now stood was known as the “Dark Path”, a kind of celestial backdoor, so he said, and a place that Rainard himself had only ever read about, but had never seen for himself. Dispelling the barrier that the Hand of Death had been guarding, Rainard and the rangers continued down the Dark Path until encountering yet another portal. Once Rainard corrected the portal, the rangers charged in.
What they encountered was a gathering of the Necromancers of Yew in a secret cave, led by the mysterious Necromancer Lord, in the middle of a ritual. The rangers immediately fought the necromancers who seemed to wield terrifying power, and as they fought a dark shape began to take form above the altar where the ancient spellbook they had stolen from Shadow Stroke lay open. After a harrowing fight the Necromancer Lord lay dead, and the entity they were summoning vanished just as Magister Rainard rejoined the rangers through the portal. During the fight, the Necrolord explained his devious plot, which was to summon a powerful revenant, one that would be capable of killing Lord Blackthorn. It was unclear whether the ritual had been sufficiently interrupted, or if the revenant had departed to begin its task. Magister Rainard, however, was determined that every precaution should be taken, and said that the rangers would likely be called again when the revenant comes calling.
