9/19/2019 – Learning that Katrina sought their help, the Rangers Guild traveled to the Salty Dog in Britain to meet with her. Once there, they learned some of her history with Julia when they had met many years ago, and how they had traveled together for a time while Julia brooded over her failure to create the original Runes of Virtue. During their travels, they had heard about a famously rugged and rare kind of stone known as valorium, which had reminded Julia that she knew a stone mason that had access to a vein in his quarry. The pair had traveled there so that Julia could extract some of the stone to fashion it into a rune, believing the strength of the material could contain the rune’s power.

The rangers accompanied Katrina as she returned to the quarry, expecting to meet with the old stone mason Master Haiter, but instead only finding his once-apprentice Gareth who informed them that Haiter had died years before. However, Gareth did have some recollection of his previous encounter with Katrina and Julia. Both Gareth and Katrina recalled that an incident had precipitated Julia’s departure from the caverns, but neither of them knew the exact nature of the event. Gareth however, warned the rangers that after Julia had left, some of the rock in the cave had come alive – bearing a kind of face, a particular section of stone within the cave seemed to block the path that led to Julia’s old work area, which had been left untouched ever since she left. The rock, which Gareth had dubbed “Y Garreg Unig”, was however composed of the very tough material known as valorium, and so Gareth advised them to steer clear of it, lest they be caught up in a battle they would not be able to win.

Nevertheless, determined to uncover any secrets from Julia’s old campsite, the rangers entered the quarry and fought the stubborn rock, enduring wave after wave of elemental entities until after considerable punishment, the Y Garreg Unig cracked open, its lifeforce seeming to dissipate and return to ordinary stone. With the path cleared the rangers were able to continue.

After clearing away the pests that had come to infest the long untouched cavern, the rangers observed the forge that Julia had used in her attempt to fabricate the first rune, as well as a journal in which described the process of creating a rune using old, runic magic techniques, as well as the difficulties and challenges in crafting the rune. In the journal Julia had also described how she painstakingly extracted the stubborn valorium and the immense effort that went into shaping and carving it. She was eventually able to charge the runic carving and felt for a moment that she had achieved success, until even that rune made of valorium had cracked. Beaten down once more by her failure, she released all of her pent-up frustration and wept. But only after letting it all out did she notice that the broken rune glimmered slightly with a stable flow of energy. It was in that moment, she claimed, to have understood the secret to the runes. However, her journal ended abruptly at the end.
