3/28/2019 – Having received a request for assistance from Keith, the rangers traveled to the Jhelom docks to meet him. There they learned that Keith had taken a job to help sustain his school’s treasury during the hard times it was having, and so agreed to provide protection for a client that was particularly interested in retaining his anonymity. The client’s ship arrived shortly thereafter, with the client himself garbed in the plain robes of a traveler.
The task, the client explained, was simple. Due to the increased pirate activity in the seas caused by Hook’s rise to power, he had hired the Brothers in Arms for protection while he transported a valuable item, which they would need to first pick up. This led them to Dragon Isle, where everyone disembarked and followed the client to a peculiar, empty spot, where he claimed his valuable property had been buried. Throwing a shovel on the ground, the client requested the rangers begin digging, and soon they found an old chest that hadn’t seen the light of day in many years. Once it had been unearthed, the chest was opened and the client retrieved his treasured item from within, revealing none other than the Rune of Valor, one of the eight runes of virtue thought lost at sea.
The client explained that the Rune of Valor was one of the first rare objects he had ever acquired. He had purchased it from an old fisherman from Vesper many years ago who had made that claim that it had been found in the clutches of a nixie, a sea creature considered to be a myth. Nevertheless, the client said he could sense the power that was contained within the object and purchased it immediately. He would then later stash it away for fear it being stolen. When asked if the client would allow Shamino to look at the rune, he was reluctant, but suggested he may be open to the idea after they had reached their destination.
However, upon returning to their ship, they encountered the Crown Jewel moored nearby, captained by the infamous pirate Hook who had somehow followed them. The interaction that followed, however, was unexpected, as Keith immediately recognized Hook as the former leader of the pirate crew he had been infiltrating for months, the Bootyful Bastards, which the Hand of Death had been making deals with. Hook revealed that he had indeed been the captain of that old crew, but betrayed them all in a move to gain control of the Guild of Thieves with the Viper Gang as his new enforcers.
The pirates and the rangers became locked in a perilous fight over the Rune of Virtue, but ultimately lost the rune when Hook seized it from the client in a desperate bid and narrowly escaped to the seas.
