2/28/2019 – In their meeting with Shamino, he explained to the rangers the investigation he had been conducting for the past few months. The Shrines of the Virtues, Shamino explained, had become afflicted with a strange degradation, which had first been only very slight and nearly unnoticeable even to Shamino’s keen senses, but had over time become clearly evident to him. The cause, however, was entirely unknown, and for this reason Shamino had been visiting various shrines and engaging in his own personal investigation of the matter. However, he had recently learned that his friend, Mariah the mage, had herself experienced a strange dream that may have been related to the shrines, and had sought the aid of the rangers.

Upon arriving at Mariah’s house in Moonglow, the rangers learned more about her peculiar dream, that she had spoken to her old, long-deceased friend Julia, who had advised her to seek out something called the Runes of Virtue. At that point, Mariah was still uncertain if her dream possessed a real meaning, or was merely a fanciful dream. Either way, she asked the rangers for their assistance in helping her seek the truth.

They began their journey by traveling to Minoc in Felucca, where Julia had once lived. In her old house, Mariah uncovered an entrance to Julia’s personal workshop, which over the years had become dusty and disorganized, and there they uncovered an old journal left behind by Julia that spoke of the Runes of Virtue – proving that her dream was more than mere fiction.

Satisfied that the workshop had been otherwise thoroughly searched, Mariah and the rangers returned to the surface and sought out some locals at the tavern to see if anyone remembered what had happened to the H.M.S. Cape all those years ago. A few old men there seemed to recall it in vague details, but once seemed to remember with some clarity seeing the ship starting to sink as it traveled west from Minoc towards a peninsula on the other side of Lost Hope Bay. Another patron noted that he had heard of a magical spring in that area that had recently appeared, and around which spirits had been observed. This seemed to be enough for Mariah to act on, and she and the rangers boarded a boat and sailed across the bay, soon coming upon the mysterious spring and an entrance into an undersea cave.

Inside the cave they found, to their surprise, the wreckage of the H.M.S. Cape, guarded by a group of water spirits. Despite searching the wreckage, however, they were unable to find the Runes of Virtue, but Mariah could not help but note that the water in the underwater cave flowed back into the sea, and thus it was entirely possible that the Runes were entirely lost.

Uncertain of how to proceed, Mariah told the rangers that she would need to think on some other possible leads, but once she did she would call to them once again.
