Enhanced Client graphics are now good instead of garbage.

I have been pancakes about the new client graphics since the KR graphics got dumped. The new graphics were dirty junk, until right now.

I wiped the hard drive and did a re-install yesterday. Something I do when installing a new firewall & anti-virus setup. I then did the install of the Classic Client completely from the website instead of installing UO:LBR and patching from there and the directX files were installed as part of the process. The Classic Client looked noticably nicer. I left the Enhanced Client patching when I called it a night. Upon getting up during the night, I decided to see how the Enhanced Client looked. Put simply, it looks good. Not flawless, the character & monster graphics still need to be redone. But the background graphics and the game motion are now clear and do look good.

I built my current system probably 8 years ago. AGP was the big video card thing. This is not a new system. It's got a 2.6 ghz P4 processor, a gig of ram, and a Nvidia 6600 GT video card with 256 MB of video ram.

I advise anyone who is having graphics problems with the Enhanced Client to wipe their computers hard drive and do a re-install with UO being the first game installed so it's directX drivers are the ones installed. Then try playing using the Enhanced Client, you may also see a world of difference the way I have.

Either doing the full install from the website instead of patching UO:LBR, or at least having the directX driver set from the UO download is probably what has made the dramatic difference.

Devs, how about making a download that will change a systems directX files entirely to what the UO clients provide? It might solve a lot of player problems with graphics. Might be worth a try.

That still doesn't change the fact that there are bugs that were reported in closed beta that are still present in the client.

Sheesh....

No I'm not a troll. Do a search of my past postings concerning EC graphics. What I am is a player who had to renew his security software and who does a reformat & clean OS install when he does it.

I had the clients come up looking better. I thought some others who also had lousy graphics with the EC might want to try it.

Re-installing to a reformatted hard drive is not that big of a deal as far as I'm concerned. It's just swapping CDs in & out. Apparently you feel differently.

My game graphics improved due to what I did.

Topic is hereby dropped.

the only thing in the OP that I will comment on is that it has been known for some years that a periodic wipe/rebuild of your hard drive is actually a good thing. Registry entries (amongst other stuff) that normally do not get properly cleared out are gone, making for better performance of Wndows overall.

By any chance while you were waiting for things to install did you clean your monitor?

I would turn down the particle effects if you are lagging too much.

That's the simple solution, However I have quite a good graphics card, Annoying I need to turn stuff down. :(

Oh don't get me wrong, I agree 100% with you, I don't lag all that much but usually if I plan on going to an event w/ heavy fighting I turn down the particle effects just in case there could be a problem. (I have a GTX 280 currently).

A little OT but does the EC support SLI?

I have a different opinion:

To my opinion, the EC still looks 80% like garbage, but it still is much better than the Legacy Client. The worst thing is the resolution of objects, which look horribly pixelated in any but the default zoom level. The character and screen movement is a little choppy, but still much better than the Legacy Client. Too bad it often is totally out of synch, which makes PvP unplayable. I like the particle effects and the ground artwork (grass, stone). I am disappointed that the beautiful plants and ships from KR have been removed and replaced by the old Legacy Client crap.

EC functionality is very good, if you neglect the list of 100 bugs that have been unsolved for almost a year now.

It is a shame that the developers are neither capable of fixing those issues, nor of communicating with us.

The EC was a good start, but now they let it die once again. I haven't seen that much incompetence in a long time.

Btw, I don't recommend anybody to reinstall the computer or wipe the hard drive before installing the EC. If this would be necessary, it would be a reason not to use the client at all.

This won't help a little bit. It has been a bug in the EC client since the beginning, that many particles on the screen cause the client to freeze and finally to crash, due to a memory leak. This will happen even on the most sophisticated computer with high-end graphics adapter, and even with turned down particle effects. This has been reported a hundred times during the past 10 months.

The problem usually appears when LOTS of field spells are being cast on the screen, or when monsters like the Stygian Dragon or Slasher of Veils cast their gigantic nova spells that set the whole screen on fire. That's why I completely stopped fighting those creatures. My client would crash at least 2 times during a Slasher of Veils adventure, preceded by minutes of freezing, of course causing my death.

Seeing how such serious issues remain unsolved for 10 months makes me want to puke.

remember to run UO (that's what I call the "legacy" or "2D" client as you all put it) in Win98 mode if you are in Win7. runs much better. also run as administrator.

that said the EC is basically a speedhack.

Thats what ya get Tanivar for posting something that makes you happy!

God forbid the EC looks good to another person. God forbid one more pulls their close minded head out of thier ass (not referring to the OP but anti EC`rs in general)and tries something new that isn`t perfection in its purest form. And please if you do try it AND like it.... DON`T post your good fortune here, you`ll just be troll fodder and turned into a punch line if you do.

The things you peaple choose to flame and **** and moan about is always amusing.:thumbup1:

I`m glad ya did have success Tanivar. If more peaple spent half as much time playing with the EC instead of whining and crying about it on the forums.....more peaple would find they`d have to pull the foot out of their mouth. /shrug,some peaple just need something to complain about I guess.

It is getting better or I would never have made the switch myself. What it is today is not what it was at release.

Flame on trolls! :lame:

Umm no. I have 2 comps side by side. I have raced myself and done lots of things trying to see if there was a visible difference between them..... Nodda. Both the 2d avatar and the EC avatar make it to the checkers at the same time. The only thing you could say is faster is things like weapon swaps and clothing swaps and such. I see no "speed" difference beteen my EC and my other CC pc OR my EC running with my RL friends on vent when their in the CC. I`ve NEVER heard them say "wait up! We can`t keep up!"

Mostly answered by opinionated buttholes that don't even read a post well...

I appreciate the OP's attempt to let us know that perhaps one of the complaints people have been having may actually be due to running an outdated version of DirectX.

Thank you OP. I appreciate the suggestion. I think you could be right, since I have never had such glaring graphics issues and thought that people such as the ones posted above me, were complete whiners unwilling to change. Now I realize they are complete whiners, unwilling to change, running old computers with outdated microsoft software support for games.

I am happily continuing to play the EC in every aspect of the game. Of course it is so much more difficult to effectively PvP if your script program is not healing you, but guess what: I still beat your lazy arses anytime. Put some time in making some macros in the EC and you will be the most effecive PvP'r of all time. I will admit that your computer has to have been updated since UO first came out. You won't be able to run it well with Vista either. WIndows 7 and a box built after 2003 and you are golden.

The message the OP wants to put out there: update your directx for free and you may see the same improvements he is seeing...

Oh and as far as suggestions of being on the company payroll for saying something positive about the EC, the opposite is true. I pay them. That is why I expect improvements over time. the EC is a great improvement, and I am happy to see my dollars at work. Since I am continuing to pay, I want to see that effort continued. I therefore agree with most that the bug list needs to be addressed in future patches.

What gets me killed in PvP is not the absence of any script or hack, but the client being out of synch (my character is not where it is displayed on the screen) and the many waterfall houses in the Yew area lagging me out.

I've been using the EC since 9 months now, and I still prefer it over the Legacy Client. However, I can neither PvP nor fight the Stygian Dragon anymore. And that's not because my computer is outdated (it isn't) or I am running Windows Vista (I don't and never will). It's because the client has been bugged since its release, and nobody ever bothered to solve these issues. They advertised the client and then played us for a sucker.

That's what I call incompetent, and there's no excuse for it.

Couldn't have said it better. I'm pretty tired of the elite attitudes around here. Go play your precious CC. I really don't give a sh*t what client you prefer, or what graphics you like better. You have your opinion and I have mine. Now let's go play the game together and just be happy UO is still around to enjoy 13 years later.

He is posting on stratics. of course he cares. What species are you by the way? Imp, golem? or are you a flaming troll? He is just voicing a frustrated opinion that he actually shares with a lot of less vocal people that play the game. In fact, considering there are perhaps 30 very frequent posters here that dominate the 'public' opinion, it is amazing this game is still alive and well. It is probably because they only constitute a very very small minority that plays the game, even if they each have 10 paying accounts... Just because they have the time to write 5000 opinions onto a webpage does not mean they are right.

(nor am i definitifely right as some smart ass will point out in their 5001st post, I am just pointing out that there are a lot more people playing the game than there are people posting frequently on stratics. I hope that is right by the way...)

I won't say the EC is good or bad...

I can stomach it ok "IF" I don't look at my character in the paperdoll because then I totally want to puke.

My main problem with the EC is every other patch causes some spike in something graphical or otherwise and it seems with every other patch I'm back to having problems with the EC causing my PC to overheat or whatever and crash... I'm not exactly sure what happens but I can say this.... when it does happen it's after a patch and I may spend like 10 to 15 min in the game and then it crashes...

This happens each time I try to play in the EC then there will be another patch and then for some odd reason it seems everything is fine again and I can play for hours in the EC...

Not exactly sure what the cause is... but I can say this... I don't like it. Nothing gets me more upset than the thought of having my PC crash.

I hear you... but I think it's more of a QA issue than an EC one, you know what I mean?

I'm definitely a minority of a minority here... I play the EC through Crossover Games on my 2007 iMac. Definitely not top of the line when it comes to the video card... but the game runs super smooth and I rarely crash or have any problems.

Seems that the EC may be more finicky than the CC. Hopefully they'll get the compatibility issues ironed out.

But I have to admit that I like the paperdolls. Especially the new roleplaying skins... :)

I also found limiting the FPS works well too. I like to run both 2D and EC at the same time sometimes and EC looks fine at the lowest FPS setting for these trade-only purposes.

The monsters still don't "pop" enough for me, it's awkward for me to play EC as hardcore as 2D because things just don't look the same and it's hard for me to change since I've been 2D for all my life, hehe.

The people who make mods for EC make the EC invaluable though. Crafter's paradise.

Classic VS E. C. VS K. R.
You got it all wrong. This discussion is not about Classic vs. EC. This is criticism about the bad programming and design job that was done on the EC. And especially criticism about a bug-ridden client that's been handed out to the customers, with nobody taking care of fixing it since almost a year.

I think you might have a point. UO's code is based on ancient code before there were quadcores, sli/crossfire, DDR2/3 etc. all kinds of options/parameters which couldn't be taken into account when UO was created.

I usually play on my game pc under vista but sometimes when I'm working on my ubuntu server I boot up a virtual machine with xp and play UO while waiting for system processes to complete. I've noticed how sometimes my virtual xp with "old" directx is faster or more fluent than my game pc which should be a lot faster. Sometimes I wonder if I should just use virtualpc, install win98 and play UO that way :p would be a nice experiment.
