Why is it we can engrave a keg but not a barrel?

I think the potion keg thought was to engrave what type of potions were inside. That's just my best guess but I feel like that is why

We simply dye them the color of the potion.

Well I say "thought" because this was like 15+ years ago potion kegs came out? Now that potions all stack; a potion keg is pointless and a waste of space (kegs only hold 100 potions vs a stack holds 60k).

If you are one of the few left who use potions for plants, they have to be in kegs. Also if you dye a keg, it doesn't seem to go into the new vat. I wonder if a non-dyed engraved keg would go into the vat?

Ask one of the 2 people who were responsible for the new potion vat, I'm sure they'll know.
