Prisoners of War
EM Seppo
Sitting in a dark corner of the cramped wagon, she attempted to control her breathing. She was used to being the one in charge. But, her current status as a prisoner afforded her with no such luxury, leeching all her will towards fending off the feelings of an overwhelming anxiety. A small hole in the ceiling revealed to her that it was well into late evening now.
Think, woman, think! Some judge you are turning out to be! Stop playing with your hair like a frightened girl. Use your wits!
A quick glance revealed a wagon full of citizens of Vesper from all walks of life. There were actors, sculptors, merchants, and even beggars. Little did she realize at the time that there were similar wagons transporting seemingly random, but carefully selected, bane prisoners all across Britannia. They had been on the road for what seemed like hours and she had lost all sense of direction. Suddenly, the wagon lurched to a screeching halt and she heard voices followed by heavy footsteps.
“Aeey, you there! Ged the prisoners out and lock em’ up. Onef the ‘ooded ones be’ere in a few days to ‘process’ em. I’ll see to gettin’ us some to drink.”
This is it, Liddie. Pull your skirt up and be brave. It is now or never! Clenching her fists and taking a deep breath, Judge Lydia Ironwood stood up defiantly...
