Dawn rubbed her forehead wearily as she looked at the reports stacked on her desk. Banes, Ophidians, Meers, Demons, attacks on the cities, stolen crystals...so many reports, so many areas to cover and answers to find.
Hearing a knock at her office door, Dawn heaved a deep sigh and said, "Yes? What is it now?"
A page poked his head in and said timidly, "Your Majesty, there is a shipmaster here to see you. He says he has important news and refuses to leave until he has an audience with you."
Dawn looked again at the reports awaiting her attention and knew it would be another long night. "Very well, show him in," she muttered.
Dawn looked bemused as the strangely dressed man entered her private office. He was wind blown and his skin was deeply tanned as though he'd spent many hours at sea. At the same time, however, he carried himself with the air of a gentleman.
"Your Majesty, my name is Dacil Dalgrin. Thank you for seeing me. I know you are beset by many worries and I'd not add to them if it was not of the utmost urgency. I've come across something that I thought warranted your immediate attention," the gentleman said as he handed over a parchment.
Dawn quickly read the parchment and then read it again, slower, taking in every word written in the strange tongue she'd not read in so many years.
"You were right to bring this to me Master Dalgrin," Dawn said. "It seems we have yet another front to contend with, although, I must admit, this one puzzles me."
Looking up from the parchment, Dawn studied Dacil Dalgrin carefully as though trying to discern his part in this.
"Sir, as you know, we are faced with fighting on many fronts and our forces are stretched thin at the moment. This may be nothing but it definitely warrants further investigation. Would you be willing to check into this further with the help of the good citizens of our land?" Dawn asked quietly.
"I've ever been a loyal citizen Your Majesty. You've only to command me," Dacil answered without hesitation.
"Very well, you'll be shown to a room to rest while the arrangements can be made," Dawn said reaching for a blank parchment to send out the summons. "You must proceed quickly but cautiously. We cannot afford more fighting if it can be avoided."
As Dacil bowed his way out of Dawn's office, she finished writing the summons and sent a page on his way to deliver the news to the citizens.
