The farmyard was quiet. Too quiet. The Royal Detective looked around. Everything looked normal. The farm animals were going about their business, there was no sign of an attack – but… everything was silent. The pigs did not grunt. The chickens did not cluck. The cows did not low.

Spreading his wings, the gargoyle went to survey the scene from above. As one beast, the [BCOLOR=#f6d5d9]eyes of the animals[/BCOLOR] turned to follow his ascent. From up here, there still seemed to be no clue as to where the farmer and his family had gone. If orcs had attacked, there would be destruction everywhere. The same would be true if wild beasts or monsters had taken them. But – nothing. Had they simply slipped away in the night? If so, then what had caused the blood-curdling screams that the neighbours had reported?

He landed near the chicken coop, perplexed. And then he saw it.

“B’gok?” asked the turkeys, as one. “Bglbl! gbl gbl!”

They came from everywhere. Turkeys, chickens, roosters, ducks, geese – all with blood in their eyes.

As the gargoyle soared upwards, narrowly avoiding an irate eagle, he wondered what the effects of casting a gate in mid-air would be, and did it anyway. A moment later, he rebounded off the side of Blackthorn’s castle, and landed in the moat – severely pecked, but alive.
