After a delay caused by life being incredibly unpleasant at the end of last year, we're back!

Monday, 10 January, 8PM UK time, at the O*T arena in Zento

The delayed writeup for the last match runs something like this ....

Frosty vs Lightning - Fast start by Frosty, who held a clear lead over Lightning for a few seconds, but was not able to maintain the pace. Steady hitting from both fighters continued through a very close match, and the final result was a hard-fought victory to Lightning

Shadow vs Quicksilver - Stats advantage heavily to Shadow, skills to Quicksilver, and skills proved massively more important! Comprehensive win for Quicksilver, poor Shadow barely landed a hit at all... Back to training for her!

(Shortage of skilled fighters meant we needed a second appearance for Frosty ... She really didn't make the most of her chances though!)

Tea vs Frosty - Very strong and fully trained, Tea was a hard fighter to match, and the nearest we had was the slightly groggy Frosty, who bravely stepped in for a second bout. At first Frosty seemed a bit stunned, and Tea landed a lot of hits without any fighting back from Frosty, but suddenly she got a huge rush of adrenaline and fough back superbly, taking the lead and looking set to cruise to a victory - but Tea had other ideas, dug in and fought back to reclaim the lead, eventually win by the smallest possible margin! Literally only one hit in it...

Sapphie vs Pepper - Fast rush in from Sapphie, by far the more experienced of the pair, but Pepper was unimpressed and blocked every attack Sapphie tried. Slowly Pepper took the lead, but Sapphie was determined and kept hammering away, until finally, with both birds in the edge of collapsing, Sapphie landed the final winning hit.

Novelty game - since chickens regularly eat bugs, we tried to find out if a deathwatch beetle was part of their natural diet! Ugly the beetle took on Dryad, a fairly well trained chicken. They were pretty evenly matched, even though Ugly was making by far the most noise, but mid-way through Ugly lived up to his name and sneakily managed to poison Dryad! Even with that advantage, it was still close, but Dryad gradually slowed as the poison took it's toll, and could only manage a brave defeat.

League positions after match 7 :

5 : PeckyBalboa, Lightning, Quicksilver, Tea
3 : Sky, Trinsic Rose
2 : Trinsic Steel, TwoTimeChampion, Sapphie
1 : Old Blue Eyes, Cerulean, Bernie, Nari, Roadrunner Two, Dryad, Frosty, Goldy Feathers, Spot

Just as well Poppy the Cat had a screen in her way, Or she'd have had a go at the chickens herself!

A quiet beginning to the New Year, which was only to be expected after such a long break, and various real life issues are tying up many of the regular attendees at the moment. Still got a full hour's worth of fights in though, and they went like this...

Frosty vs Yin - Newcomer Yin is a very impressive specimen, extremely high stats and fully trained. Frosty comes close, but slightly lower in strength even if far more experienced in the arena. Fairly evenly matched, Yin got off to a fast start and landed several heavy hits on Frosty, who seemed a bit stunned and had trouble fighting back. She tried hard, but Yin never lost that early advantage and claimed an impressive victory on her first appearance. Looking like a potential future champion, this bird...

Quicksilver vs Nugget - Veteran Quicksilver against less experienced Nugget, a slight stats edge to Quick and a slight (very slight!) skills advantage with Nugget. At first they traded blows solidly, and seemed perfectly matched, but then Nugget faded somewhat and Quick took advantage, landing a series of hits that left Nugget struggling, and finally Quick finished her off with another burst of rapid attacks. Good win for Quicksilver.

Tea vs Sky - Tea is another exceptionally strong bird (must be something about Europa hay!), Sky is well above average too but on paper it looked to be a slight advantage to tea. However, almost prophetically, Tea's owner observed as they went in to the ring it's often the one that gets the first couple of hits in that takes the victory, and Sky must have been taking notes because that's exactly how she behaved. She took a fast lead, but Tea was not giving up and fought back hard. It seemed she might turn the fight around, but Sky held on to get a very close victory.

Yin vs Lightning - We usually try avoid more than one fight for each bird, but Lightning is a VERY tough customer and hard to match for sheer stats, so Yin stepped in to the ring for her second bout of the night as the most suitable contender there. Also, as a newcomer, a second win for her would not hugely affect the league rankings, so it looked likely to be an interesting match. It was indeed, unusually a very fast and very close fight where both birds went berserk for the win. Lightning emerged victorious, although very badly injured, and it could very easily have gone to Yin.

Geeko vs Yang - Two slightly above average birds, rather than the extremes we'd seen earlier, and a potentially close match. However, it was amazing just how close it got! Geeko rushed in and took the lead, Yin fought back and reclaimed it, and it then swung between the two for a long and tough bout, Geeko finally got the win with only 2hp left to her name - literally one hit in it.....

And for the novelty bout - Minidragon, a fairly trained skree, took on Ephialtes, a fairly well trained nightmare. Skree are a rather problematic beast, certainly cute and adaptable with a mix of mysticism and magery, but I still reckon very weak for a four control slot pet - not one I'd recommend hunting with! Ephialtes had a distinct edge in physical power, but Mini clearly led in magical power, so it was likely to be close. Ephialtes took a quick lead, Mini offset that with some crafty healing spells and they seemed closely matched, until Ephialtes remembered how magery worked and landed a combination of a swift kick and a flamestrike that left Mini struggling, and soon Ephialtes finished her off.

So, currently the points look like this :

6 : Lightning, Quicksilver
5 : PeckyBalboa, Tea, Sky
3 : Trinsic Rose
2 : Trinsic Steel, TwoTimeChampion, Sapphie
1 : Old Blue Eyes, Cerulean, Bernie, Nari, Roadrunner Two, Dryad, Frosty, Goldy Feathers, Spot, Yin, Geeko

Next match scheduled for Monday, 24 January, as ever 8 PM UK time at the O*T Arena, Zento!
