EC UI modding: How to get started?

I've been browsing this forum today; looking at the different mods that are available and reading some posts. It all sounds very interesting and I'd really like to try my hand at writing some mods. But that raises the following question:

How do I get started with this? Is there any documentation, a list with available functions, any guides, anything at all?
Or is the only way to learn by dissecting other people's mods?

I do have some scripting experience, mostly with PHP, so I understand the basic flow of code but other than that I'm completely new at this.

Any help would be appreciated

the documentation is in the userinterface folder of the game, but there are very few examples... best way to learn is to explore the default ui
