Markee Dragon used to be a very active UO player and rare collector. He has been posting some videos recently about UO history. Two videos were about the history of rares and the early market for them.
Part 1 - http://youtube.com/watch?v=KymNu0ym-0Y
Part 2 - http://youtube.com/watch?v=CXDKHJIzrz0
While he does embellish a bit (inventing the name "Rares"?) there is some good information in there for people who may not know how the whole thing got started. It is funny how a whole profession started out of a couple bugs in the game.
I think it is also interesting to draw a parallel between the early market and the new Rubble we have. Unlike EM items, there is no way to know the exact number in existence. And Rubble is obviously rare because it was only available through limited means for a limited time.
