EAL Dead Now or Forever?

Do you guys think EAL is being shut down to make way for another online Sims game being built from the ground up? It seems like MMOs are indisputably the future of gaming and the Sims is such a large franchise... I just can't see EA walking away completely.

I think we'll see another TSO in the future.

I think its possible, but I would think in the near future. 5 years + maybe... anything is possible. But considering the priority and care EA handled TSO I don't think they will try again.

They have sims carnival now.
That's where their focus is probably.:p

I think if there was going to another online Sims game from our friends at EA, they wouldn't have given us the royal shaft. I will have a hard time justifying spending my entertainment dollars on anything from EA.

*coming soon, a really cool signature!

If there is another TSO, I doubt Will Wright will be doing it. In that case, I won't be participating.

If Will Wright steps in and saves our game, then that's a whole nother story. :D

I think you need to read the comments by Nancy Smith, Global President of The Sims at EA Games where she says:
Our players like coming together to share what they have created. But the actual creative process itself is a single-player experience.
And there was also that line from the - I think it was the Sims Carnival website - where they said something along the lines of 'there will not be an online component because our research shows people don't like to play that way'.....or something like that.

Well...

But don't you think most games will have online components in the future?

It's my impression that most people who start to play online games, have a hard time going back to offline games. They miss the social aspect, and the game experience becomes flat and uninteresting without it.
Computers now are our window to the world, not just a box we stare into so we can get lost in ourselves.

It seems to me that online games is where the money is, and where the public's interest is.

I would say that EA might be stupid enough not to invest in that now, but probably will go back to that later, when they come to their senses. Or when some sensible person joins the company.
Or perhaps EA is a company that would rather just box a game and ship it and forget about it.

Given their "talents" in customer support and so on, they might be better off sticking to that.

I totally agree that online play is the future. I've been playing Call of Duty 4 since November. The majority of the time has been online. The game experience is unique each time I log in because it's a different group of people.

However, I'm not sure the money has followed yet. I paid a one time fee of $48 for the game and another $10 for the new maps. Online play is free with the PS3. What incentive is there for the game company to keep the servers up?
But then you take a game like WoW - PC based with a monthly subscription. There is probably a lot more overhead in keeping that game online than a console game.

At some point, I think those two approaches will find a common ground.

Hopfully they can learn from their mistakes with TSO and make a new sims online game in the future.

I think anything is possible.

If it were to happen, I wonder if a new Online Sims game would be based more on cross-platform technology, instead of PC based. The day when a game can be accessed from game system or PC or cell phone or messenger or pda or via MySpace or homepage or whatever - player's choice - surely is coming soon. We have persistant worlds now, but not omnipresent ones.

I often wondered that myself.... Maybe there would be more players if we can take the game w/ us ... by pc, cell, or pda ect.....
when im at work, often there are times where i have a 4-5 break between shifts... You know if the game was mobile.... where I would be :) At times ive been known to take my laptop to work and go to the nearest library to get the wirless internet, Just so i can play TSO for a few hrs while at work... But i didnt want to carry the laptop to work all the time... would be much easier w/ a a smaller electronic what ever that may have been

I'll tell you one thing I know for sure: if EA has an interest in any future TSO game I will not be tempted to try it -- even if they promise us founder status and simmies along with our 4th and 5th year gifts. They have shown me more than I ever wanted to know about how little regard they have for their customers, and how inept they are at online gaming development and support. (Actually, they appear to be exceptionally inept in all ways.)

You know: burn me once, shame on you; burn me twice, shame on me. I realize I allowed myself to get 2nd and 3rd degree burns more than twice already, but I have finally learned the lesson.

I'd try it, simply because we love the Sim games. But if they tried to do another TSO they won't be able to lure me back with flowers and candy. The next time I demand a prenup!

Promises or spin won't hack it. Everything they promise that will be in the game had better be there at launch, 'cause I won't be paying a dime til it is. That goes for any EA MMO.

You mean that online play is the "present" as they been around for about 2 decades now(community-based online gaming.)
No, I said what I meant. Something can be the present without being the future.

I should say I'm not surprised that already there is a "dead or not" thread, even though the OP has turned it into a "could there be something new coming" twist.

And of course, someone has posted "I'll never again... with EA..." :bdh:

Basically, guys, Parizad and her team have done an amazing job trying to resurrect something that the folks at EA had given up on a long time ago, and for awhile there, we had new life in this game. Give credit where credit is due, and don't blame those that tried... blame the ones that are no longer even there who threw their hands up on the air a long, long time ago and left us twisting in the wind as a result.

Three cheers to Parizad and her team for giving this all the ol' college try. Their enthusiasm has been a breath of fresh air, and I for one appreciate it. *nods*

You're right, they haven't... but it's not EA as a whole - it's a specific few who work/worked at EA.

Someone else mentioned that they couldn't understand how UO has survived under EA for so long... with their success, doesn't that mean that there are people at EA who know what they're doing.

I'm just saying that the anger and frustration needs to be pointed in the right direction. It's not the company as a whole, just a select few. And rather than pointing fingers at the evil people who are closing EA-Land, why not give kudos to those that have worked tirelessly to keep it going?

EA has determined that "Sim" fans do not play together well in an online game setting. I doubt very seriously anything will be done with sims in an online virtual world ever.

I would love to know where they got that research (might want to fire that firm and redo). With the millions and millions of players on all different online gaming channels (WOW, Second Life, Diablo just to name 3 - and not to mention the players from TSO that would of stuck around if they didn't have their head in the dirt).... Can they really back that up. Do they really think the gaming market will really buy that statement? Can they really be so disconnected from their customer base.. from the world for that matter. I don't know about anyone else, but that statement made me realize they are not out to meet customer needs in the future at all and will loose out on many players for this reason.

Oh! I know exactly where they got their research. They had 5+ years of reading players disagree, debate, and argue about every which way Sims online should be played just reading stratics. :D

I think that "research" made by EA is a crock.

They are probably basing it on their own prejudice.

Something like "middle-aged housewives are playing The Sims, and they probably don't want to play online" or something...

The thing is, "middle-aged housewives" are now raised with computers.
Those who are middle-aged today started their lives playing Amiga and Commodore. Those who are middle-aged in a couple of years will have even more computer experience. We'll have computer networks in the old folks home. Damn right they wanna play online!

EA are making a big mistake.

I doubt EA is abandoning the idea of virtual worlds, especially with the social networking aspect. In my opinion (and this is completely my opinion and my speculation), I think that they were on the right track with the customizable virtual world targeted more to our *ahem* demographic. Let's face it -- everyone can create something here regardless of technical know-how, and I think that's an attractive feature. I also think they were on to an idea with the social networking aspect.

But, I'm not sure that TSO was the right springboard for that effort. I think TSO started out as an MMORPG of sorts, and a customizable virtual world of sorts, but I think it always uncomfortably straddled the line between virtual world and game, and as a result wasn't terribly successful as either. Viewed through the eyes of a classic Sims player, I can agree with that assessment that Sims players like sharing what they create but not necessarily playing together. However, I also think the flaw in that line of thinking was marketing and treating TSO like the god game that inspired it. It's a whole different thing, and appeals to a different player, IMHO.

Coulda woulda shoulda aside, the other problem was that it's difficult to turn around a game in less than a year that had languished for so very long. Luc and team were given a very short time and very limited resources to effect a turnaround. They had to deal with the existing problems, outdated code, and all kinds of other things -- remember, no one had touched this game in any significant way since something like 2003. So, in addition to fixing everything after all that time languishing, they were to update it and put it on a path that was profitable. Herculean task at best, Sisyphean one at worst. I believe with some time and support they would have created something interesting. I don't think it would have resembled TSO much, but I think that would have been a GOOD thing. I think given the time and resources allotted, they did a heck of a job.

I also think that I am not so sure I disagree with the decision to close TSO/EAL on a corporate level. (Don't hurt me!) I think the real shame is the lack of support from EA to the remaining player base -- that whole $15 or Pogo thing is just insulting, IMHO. Not that I won't use it, most likely, but it's still awful. If they'd moved us all to UO, it would have demonstrated an attempt to provide as close to a replacement to the player base as they could have. They also could have been more generous than providing the same discount I can get from a coupon clipped out of the Toys R Us flyer. I feel we are being treated shabbily.

I like to think that they will let this talented group continue to develop this virtual world/social networking idea. I hope that they are allowed to pursue this idea unencumbered by having to fix something that's broken, and that they will be allowed to devote their energies to creating. I have no idea if they will or won't, of course...but I like to think maybe that's where our team is off to.

(Edited for typos. Twice!)

I saw that interview. Ummmmmm which rock is she hiding under? Guess that would explain why Second Life and Wow have so many players. People don't like online games where they can visit with their friends and have fun at the same time. I'm Soooooooooooo glad she cleared that up for us

Obviously this woman has NEVER played the game. People don't like to interact with each other...yeah right..that's why skill, money and game properties always had a lot of people...I'll tell you where they went wrong. The money wipe and taking the casinos out and waiting so long to update. CC, while it sounded like a good idea, needed work before being implemented. THAT was the problem. Heck, we had more people playing BEFORE they started changing the game, which should've told them something. Ok, sorry...needed to vent.

Yeah but they still failed, didn't they? The oh-so-wonderful Luc had all these great ideas, which many people fell for - but didn't actually listen to what players wanted.

Then, when it became clear that he had failed, what does he do? Bail out and run, leaving everyone else to get the rap and go down with the sinking ship, instead of him taking the blame. I haven't heard or seen a squeak out of him since, unless I missed something.

Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong!

The game didn't fail because of their ideas. The game failed because they simply ran out of time. Part of that is possibly because they listened too much to what the players wanted. Had they been given more time, the issues we were facing could have been resolved.

Luc didn't "bail out and run". He quit when EA told him to stop what his team was doing, that they were going to pull the plug despite his teams best efforts. He quit when EA refused to give him more time.

It was all too little, too late. Period. Even with the best team in the world they probably wouldn't have been able to undo the last 5 years of contempt of EA for us, and all the damage they have done to themselves not just amongst us but the wider Sims community.

If Luc really cared 'so much' for us... why has he not been seen since about a week before his 'departure' was announced?

You might buy the 'official line' ... but something doesn't smell right to me still.

He left after EA announced to the team that they were shutting down and left to start what he started... a replacement.. So don't blame him.. or any of the hard working DEV's .. who to blame is the big bully EA who didn't do a dame thing to promote this game nor did they give this game a real trial base after all the changes.....

I seem to recall we got the shutdown message on the 29th, yet an interview I read said he left on the 22nd, which means they knew for at least a week before telling us about it.

The 'big relaunch' into EA-Land was, I think, late February - which would make it that they gave up after two months?

But at the end of the day it doesn't matter, he's disappeared now, our game is dead, and EA have finally succeeded in getting rid of that annoying little game they've hated since day 1.

They knew about it long before the 29th (Parizad indicated in a Town Hall meeting that day that they knew about it at least two weeks prior, but were not allowed to say anything).

They probably analysed the income figures, worked out which day the most people's accounts were paid, and waited till after that to milk the last bit that they could before pulling the plug.

Did you know that googling "EA sucks" brings up over 29,500 pages? Useful fact for the day :)

However, most - if not all, I didn't bother to check every link - do not actually refer to me specifically but other entities around the world called "AJ" whereas every mention that EA sucks refers to the gaming company Electronic Arts.

Funny really, AJ are my initials and I used that to create the sim from my real name, now I'm known more and more as AJ instead of Andrew, so at least that little bit of TSO lives on.

I suspect they knew when they were canceled the voting for a new name for the currency.

Why bother changing the name when they knew the game was shutting down?

On a side note, I wish they would give us the Lava lamps. I am curious so see exactly what they looked like in the game.
