I think EA should sell some virtual items through the UOgamecode store but have the money of the sell or a portion of it go to non-profit/charity. Maybe some of these items could also be reflected in the game too, (e.g. a virtual livestrong bracelet, donation title, or something).

I personally don't like buying virtual items with real money, but this would give me a quilt-free reason to purchase some, and maybe this would be a first for a MMORPG? I'm sure EA could write this stuff off their taxes too. What do you guys think?

Let me guess... you want to pick the charity the money goes to also? We could never agree on that. If you feel guilt about spending your money, then you probably shouldn't be doing it.

I am sure EA does charity work already. A good idea but, UO seems like a charity these days heh.

Well, they could add a selection of organizations we could select from.

Even if EA already did some charity work, they could add more to their tax forms as a way for them to get stealth income/save money

Like I said, this can support the game by tax-write off's.

My point is, I know many people like me who simply wont buy virtual goods for money period, and that's fine, because that's our problem. but i'm sure many of us would give second thoughts about it if we knew the money wasn't just for pixels.

it isn't just for pixels. it's so EA doesn't decide to close UO. so it's a donation to the Personal Happiness Fund (PHF).

I can't stand people who wear Livestrong bracelets in real life, so I imagine they'd continue to be a pretty good in-game idiot barometer.

This is probably an unrealistic idea for EA, honestly.

If you feel guilty, set it so that -you- donate a % of whatever you spent to a charity of your choice. So if you spend $30 on something, send an additional amount to a charity. You could also put in the time and volunteer in your home town. There are a lot of ways to make this world a better place, but a company shouldn't be the ones to give you an ease of conscience... that is your job.

I like it. Would be better than buying from ******bag scripters or spawn cammers or whatever.

I sincerely mean no disrespect but, it sounds like your trying to make it so it is okay for you to buy them. The charity idea is good and I think sincere but, between the it will make us feel better and just so a tax write off seems out of place to me. If you really think about it, buying the items is helping keep Ultima Online open. No profit no Devs... no devs...no new content....no new content.. no players....no game.

I say for charity we should auction off the Uo team members.

Win a date with Draconi
Win a date with Chrissay
Win a date with Mesanna
Win a date with Wilki
Win a date with Stephen
Win a date with Sakkarah

You bid for a romantic evening in Buc's Den Tavern Fel for two.
I will be bidding on all of them to win a date!!! Okay now im off topic. :twak:

to the OP, you're heart is probably in the right place.

unfortunately, telling someone else how to use the money they earned is sort of like buying a self-help book for someone else...it will probably be unwanted.

So, you are saying supporting cancer-cure research is bad? Lance Armstrong gets no financial support from this, and pretty sure whatever he has done is more than you or I will ever for charity or fellow mankind.

Aside from the other stupid statement that Aran made, if EA/Mythic degraded into charities and politics by online donations as proposed, I would stop paying to play. Games and politics shouldn't mix.

I already put about 5% of my income, but i'm just saying there could be more... not just an idea for me, but a idea for EA. Just proposing an idea, that's all.

not sure if you're referring to EA or the customers but either way EA wouldn't have to use their current earnings and people would have a choice.

Some of you bring this up, but the same can be said about every single business in the world, from wal-mart, 7-11, a car dealership, starbucks, my local hippie shops, and etc... all helps them stay open when buying from them, that's business, not charity. Some people don't like buying pixels as much as others don't like buying cookies or bottled water, however cookies and bottled water can't be copied like virtual things so there would be very little, if any, loss for EA.

No offense Old Man as I have always respected your viewpoint but Lance Armstrong is IMO a selfserving jackass that is using a horrible disease as a crutch to promote his own viewpoint/gains. "If anyone says anything about the fact that I am currently a disruptive & lousy teammate they must be a godless cancer basher" Ouch :(

I have to agree that Lance is a self-serving jackass, and treated his beautiful ex-wife very poorly. And, if you've ever read his auto-biography that was written after his first Tour win, you can see how self-centered he is. Of course, I've been accused of being a jackass myself now and then.

But that still doesn't negate the wonderful things he is doing for cancer research and fund raising. Maybe it's because of his own experience with cancer, or maybe he is trying to make up for being a jackass... but the LiveStrong is a wonderful organization.

hate to break it to you.... But by playing UO and paying the monthly fee you are spending your money on Virtual goods. Of course unless you are telling us that you dont really play any online game and just post on the forums for games with ideas :)

Just a thought.
