Because anyone outside the USA doesn't really matter or count do they?

You do realise the larger percentage of UO subscribers, is actually outside the USA?

Gee... thanks for your support! rolleyes:

Possibly the worst classic shard idea Ive ever heard

youre obviously not very 'old school' as it would be 100 gold, not 1000
Usually, it was opening your eyes to a lovely black and white world... and realizing you were already dead and your 100 gold was gone. :p

Joking right? Particularly the buy-in part.

As for tram and fel? Classic typically refers to the original, fel only. Debatable about existence of T2A

I'd for sure pay like $29.99 or whatever the upgrade cost is to get into it. But charging money could easily go either way for them. It might pull in extra income, but it might also deter people from joining that would otherwise come back to the game.

I've got a sneaky feeling that the future will be this:

- Production shards and Siege/Mugen

"Free-To-Play" & subscription mixture, with revenue from increased release of items via game store, access to areas of the game available for purchase. Similar to Dungeons & Dragons Online, which this concept has worked very well for it seems.

- Classic Shards

Given the support for pre-AoS era, less item-centric, totally subscription based.

I could be way off the mark of course, but I look at industry trends and the increased activity of the UO game codes store. They both suggest this is a direction things are heading.

Pay extra? No thanks. They'll make enough money off people returning to the game.

Hell, the classic shard should be $9.99 per month since once it is set up, there would be no development time... just customer service and IT support.

lol right... there will have to be development time to fix all of those bugs that existed back then that you just don't remember 6+ years later. Unless you want all the old dupes, etc. back on the new shard there will always be some development costs.

If we get a classic shard we should pay the same as anyone else, actually some of us would actually pay for a collectors box/CD version like the old UO in addition to the monthly fee, at least it was discussed a bit in the first classic shard thread.

I'm always open to ideas on how to give EA more incentive to move ahead with the idea, but for all I or anyone else knows they may already have the thing built :p

I read a few things on the "freemium" games, and it's actually a good business.

The introduction of Imbuing has got me thinking that UO is going to move to a 'pay for items' model. But I don't think it will end subsciption payments. I think they will just not release "expansions" anymore. The need for new lands in non-existant. They have plenty of land that is unused right now. The devs could spend the next 10 years adding and changing in-game content in the existing dungeons and still not run out of things for players to do. What has been their model in the past is releasing new lands, new monsters, and new items that can only be gotten in those new lands from those new monsters. I don't think we will see that anymore. I think what we will see from now on is batches of trivial items, like the new ones on the Code Store, being launched periodically. It's easier, it requires less development time, and it allows players to choose whether or not they purchase them. If a player is too lazy to recall on a marked rune, and then walk inside a friend's house, then the new teleport house deco thingy is perfect for them. rolleyes:

I know this has nothing at all do to with the original topic of this thread, but I agree with several other posters, we have pretty much covered the whole Classic Shard thing. The devs know where we stand.

There's talk of making use of the vast and mostly unused oceans on the current maps. That would be a great idea and given the amount of space there is to play with, you could build a whole "expansion" around seafaring, whilst also using the current maps. I certainly know a few "piratey" posters here who would love to see that happen.

There's large land based areas that can be worked on, dungeons that can be "upgraded" and improved upon.

Basically, the infrastructure is already in place within the game. There's no need whatsoever for additional lands, unless of course, you perhaps add a few more islands into existing oceans. The Fire Island entrance area to The Underworld is a good example of making good use of an existing area.

Agreed. Those who've posted in support of the idea, although having differences on a couple of key areas, generally agree on most aspects.

I'm just twiddling my thumbs and waiting for something "official".

I'd love to see them develop the oceans in UO. More to the point, I'd love even more if they would "unify" the map. Forget facets. The fiction behind it could be that what they thought were facets, were simply points on the globe. At one point, mankind thought that the world was flat. They learned. The same could happen in UO. A single map could be stitched together...and all of the land masses joined by the oceans. How cool would it be to be able to sail from Trinsic to Tokuno to Illshenar and back to Trinsic?

I always thought that UO had the best idea where the world was concerned. Well, that was up until T2A.

It's perhaps the one area I would love to have seen developed more, ahead of any of the expansions.

I recall in pre-Trammel days, many an occasion where groups of us would jump on ships and chase each other around the seas. Obviously mages and archers were the main characters people used, that could fire projectiles of some sort.

Good fun and I'm surprised it's something the devs never really looked into developing further.

Thing is now though, how would you implement "piracy" or sea battles in UO, without it containing elements of PvP, which clearly the majority of current players don't want to participate it? What would you have in its place - NPC pirates on ships?

paying gold to a company will not get them any more $$$ in their pocket. If this was Second Life, or Entropia then it would work

You make a good point. I don't see how a pirate expansion could happen without open PvP. Funny, two of the regular posters here on UHall that have pirates as avatars regularly post against open-PvP.

200m = ~$200

Hardly 'worthless' even though it used to be much more.

I don't really care what it costs, I just want to see it happen.

I hope the devs will actually listen and bring about a Classic Shard. Life is short, and you rarely...if ever...get a chance to correct mistakes you make. This is a golden opportunity, and I hate to see them let it pass them by.

I understand your point, hence the "once it's set up" part. Get it right and let it run. After that, leave it the heck alone! Continuous development is exactly how Mythic screwed up their "Classic" DAOC servers!
