Sounds like its time once again for the Midnight Howlers. It was an Old Navy Tradition aboard the USS Forrestal CV-59. On the flight deck at midnight on a clear night when the moon was full, everyone would take a minute out of flight ops to "Howl At The Moon" at exactly midnight. Dont know why but afterwards you would always feel less alone.
We are here for you Man!

HHHOOOWWWWWLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember when my dad had to put my childhood dog to sleep about 10 years ago. she was a beautiful and sweet 14-15 yo golden retriever. I think he took it harder than I did, because he actually had to make that decision. I hope all goes well, but it really is best to let your pup pass with some dignity and remember the good times.

Angel in the Post Office

This is one of the kindest things I've ever experienced. I have no way to know who sent it, but there is a kind soul working in the dead letter office of the US postal service. Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:

Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith.

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by. Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I am wherever there is love.

Love, God

OMG Paul, that so made me cry. I lost my cat Buster not too long ago and I still cry when I think about him. That was a wonderful story and thank you for sharing. There certainly are good people in this world and we sometimes forget just how good.

Might I suggest the book "Rescuing Sprite", by Mark Levin?

It's the radio talk show host's own story of dealing with the loss of a pet.

*hugs hugs hugs hugs hugs hugs hugs*

This is one of the hardest things any pet "parent" has to deal with, and we all have at one point or another. We'll be thinking of you, and your pup.

I lost my collie, Rusan when I was 12.... I still think of her and remember how she went with me everywhere. Even today when I see a collie I want to run over and hug her. Parsifal you and your buddy will be in my thoughts. That was a beautiful story Paul. There is alot of love in this world.

Parsifal,

I am very sorry for your loss.

Peace,
Fabienne

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
