Simple question. I've been watching my guy punch stuff while holding an axe for literally forever and I just have to wonder, did they never draw mounted swing animations for two-handed weapons in the first place?

Good question. Total guess here, but I'm going to say probably not.
I don't think they ever drew the back side of any of the shields either. I think that is why your shield and sword switch hands when your riding South compared to North, so as to always display the front of the shield.
