Disco and the Crystal Ball of Knowledge

Help me a bit understanding proper usage of my (newly acquired, never had one before) Crystal Ball of Knowledge - as it applies to determining the best animal/monster for training Disco at whatever level.

My char is currently at 45 real Disco (using no jewels on her) and training on Polar Bears as suggested by Poo and others here. Gains seem quite good at my 45 skill. When I check to see what my Crystal Ball of Knowledge says about Polar Bears it says: "Discordance Difficulty: Very Easy".

Now this confuses me a bit. It would seem to me that a target that is "Very Easy" shouldn't give me the gains that, say, a target that is "Optimal". Poo's primer would have me use Polar Bears up to 60 or 65 (with additional reports from users like Sinister703). Well, if Polar Bears are "Very Easy" now at 45 skill, then it would follow that gains from now on should get slooo and sloooooer - long before I ever get to 60-65....

Or am I missing something about all of this... ???

Please understand that I am NOT in ANY way questioning the suggestions for Disco training given in the Disco Primer thread - but rather I'm trying to adapt my understanding of how to properly use the Crystal Ball of Knowledge in the future...

All feedback appreciated...
:)

the pets that are listed in the old disco training thread are a very simple list.

when it was made (the list) i was going for the easiest to get / non aggressive animals.

then after that we set them up so as to use them for the 'absolute longest' time you could.

so your right, take for example the polar bears.
you CAN take them all the way to like 65 skill in disco.
you CAN do that, but your gains will be reallllllllllllllllllly slow after say 58.

i think somewhere in that thread we list a more detailed list of pets that you can add onto the simple list.
it adds like gamans and greater beetles and such.

so take that list with a grain of salt.
it was made to be the easiest critters that you could use for the longest time with little (no) risk to youself while training.

that said, those crystal balls or the skill training statuettes are a simple little device that range your skill to i think 50 % success.

so anything over that 50% mark it tells you its very easy.
where you can gain very well to like 70% and gain all the way up to 99%
so ya have to take what those training things tell you with a gain of salt.

i wonder if those trianing things take other stuff into consideration when your training.....
like your music skill, instrament type, masteries ect ect ect.

Thanks Poo for taking the time to respond, and what you're saying makes complete sense. And I too wonder if they take music, Exceptional instruments, Masteries, etc. into account. I might just take some time to do a bit of experimenting to see what I can find out.

Here is what I am doing. Currently I am 89.5 Disco and 92.5 music. All animals were tamed and kept in my stable. I went to Luna and found an area to work disco (or you can got to any location that is safe so your unbonded animals wont get attacked and die). Music gains really fast and i made sure that it was no more that 10 points higher than my disco. When music hit the 10 point mark I locked it and worked Disco up to within 3 points of Music and then unlocked muscic and let it rise to the next 10 Point mark. It seemed when disco and music were withing 3 point of eachother and they were both rising that the gains were alot faster on disco. You can easily gain 3-5 point in music and disco in and hour or so with this method. It slows down to about .5 in an hour after 85 skill.

0-30ish buy skill

30-65ish Polar bears: Goto ice isalnd and tame 5 PBs. Line them out and disco them. When all are discoed, invis until it wears off. Keep repeating till around 65ish

65ish-80: Drakes. Go tame 2 drakes. Line them up and disco them. When both are disoed, invis until disco wears off. Repeat

80-90: Night Mares: Go tame 2 night mares. Line them up and disco them. When both are discoed, invis until it wears off. Repeat til 90.

90+ use mastery spell (so I have been told)

your shooting yourself in the foot with your training there.

if you music isnt at 100 then you are wasting attempts that dont pass the music check.

when you use a barding skill it first has to passt he music check.

if you under 100 it rolls the dice to see if you pass or fail.
if you fail you dont even get to use the skill (or get a gain)

if you pass then it moves onto the skill (disco in this case) and then checks it up with the barding difficulty and all that other stuff.

so in your case, when you where down training at around 60 range, you where failing your music check half the time.
so half the time you where trianing you went even training.

clear as mud?

just thought id point that out to ya.

for barding skills the number 1 rule of thumb is to take your music to 100 and lock it there.
dont go over, dont go under.
GM it.
lock it.

dont even look in its dirrection until you are done trianing your bard skills.
treat it like that fat kid with acne at the high school dance... shun it like the plauge!

hmm, never had trouble with failing after failing as I had made sure that the barding difficulty of the animal was well within my skill level. Originally i moved my GM music from my thunter over and tried working disco, and to be quite honest it stunk. I succeeded to much with little gains. It was not until I i matched the skills together that I saw tremendous disco gains. I could see your point if you wanted to work skill while fighting. Right now my problem is that the mares are too easy to disco and my gains have slowed down. I am trying to milk them to get the last bit done to 90 so I can use the mastery spells.

Delbrie - I'm working up provo on my bard (it's around 84 now) and I noticed that provoking two Bane recruits on each other is in the "optimum" range. As long as your bard is neutral or better to the Bane, you might find success going to a city under invasion (or Ilshenar Spirituality) and disco'ing the recruits. The hound masters and dragon riders are still "challenging" at my skill level, btw.

Ok, I love this thread - and here's where I am right now:

I worked my disco up to 78 with the last 10pts from Lowland Boura's when the gains were drying up. I then decided to incorporate some of the suggestions in this thread and the wonderful Poo's Disco Primer into my bard.

Sooo... I took her Music down to 100 and LOCKED IT there.
I used soulstones to remove all her skills except Music, Provo and Magery - which left her with 288 total skill points. She is using only NPC purchased Lutes.

I had my tamer go out and donate a few deaths for her (bard owes tamer bigtime) and gathered a small "herd" of Cu Sidhe's (17 of them).
I have my tamer on a 2nd instance of the classic client with her herding keep them in place for my bard's training.rolleyes:

I had my Gargoyle Imbuer make several peices of jewelry for her, the set she is wearing now takes her Disco to 100 (where her Crystal Ball of Knowledge shows the Cu Sidhe's as "Easy").

She has eaten just short of "Too Full".

As of now her total attempts (today) at Disco is 236 with ZERO gains this past 2 hours (and yes, Disco is "Turned Up").

I'm obviously missing something... HELP :sad2::(

***** MAJOR EDIT***** Ok, this is for anyone out there who forget's to check what should be the most obvious factor here. After ALL the work above, I forgot something soooo simple that I'm almost embarrassed to tell you - but..... I forgot to have her EAT the freekin Disco PS. She's sittin there disco'n her little heart out at a 100 SkillCap (and her jewels take her exactly to that to be able to do Cu Sidhe's at 78 real). Needless to say she has now GLADLY eaten the scroll - and you should have seen the look on her face when I showed up with it :fight:... If looks could kill someone else would have to have edited this post....:gun:
Peace, OUT...rolleyes:
