Disappointed - Cooking Skill messed up with Publish 56

So I started working on Cooking about two months ago. It's one of those UO Skills I'd never gotten around to GM'ing, having even taken a few stabs at it with chars over the years but never finishing the skill up. Well, after two months of making dough and baking bread and accelerating the onset of arthritis by several years down the road, I finally hit GM Cooking today.

What's the sign of a GM Cook? Why, it's a cake with their named proudly affixed to it, a Sosarian tradition!

I excitedly bake my first cake as a GM Chef and produce an exceptional item. The status window on the Cooking menu even says so and indicates I've marked it.

I click on the cake - no mark! wth?

I bake more exceptional cakes, menu stills says theyre being marked. I logout/in, perhaps something needs to be refreshed. Still no luck.

Then it strikes me, since theyre stackable since Pub56, they won't hold a Maker's Mark, plus the text in the Cooking menu needs to be updated.

I was kinda disappointed, all that work and nothing to really "show" for it, not to mention had I just GM'd Cooking just 2 weeks ago I would have at least gotten to have a cake or two with my name on it. I think this sucks, they should change it back for some of these items. How would other crafters, Blacksmiths for example, feel if they could no longer mark their creations? Perhaps they will be next?

All existing GM-marked cakes are now finite and will perhaps even be considered a rare someday. I'm going to send a message to Joanna, I know she is new at handling UO but I hope she will understand it's a Sosarian tradition, and I would urge others, Chefs or not, to help me in getting this changed back to the way it was.

As a sidenote, it's not just cakes, but all stackable food items. Strangely enough, what doesnt stack(yet) and will hold the Maker's Mark are cake mix and unbaked pies, but jeez, hardly a masterpiece to display...

Also watch out if you write with a food decorating tool. They will still stack, but now your writing is deleted on one of the cakes. :grrr:

right? I mean, this is more or less the whole point of getting to GM with Cooking...

I got around the label problem by separating the cakes and labeling one by one. And just never re stacked. It kept my cooks name when I did that if it was exceptional. Now when I went to go makes enchanted apples none of them were labeled with my cooks name all exceptional but no name even though it said I marked them. It's frustrating to say the least. Definitely send it in to Joanne via the feedback form. *points down to sig*

I sent her an email, trying to explain the situation as, game mechanics-wise, it's "working" but is not really doing what is "normal". Also, thanks for the tip on labeling the cake, but it's still not the same, plus I made this character on one of my secondary accounts and really can't bring myself to spend $32.46($29.99 UOML upgrade code + TX sales tax) just so I can use a workaround when my cake would have had my name on it automatically for the past decade til just 2 weeks ago with Publish 56.

I've had a GM chef for years, this is really not an acceptable change to me either. Much as it's handy for things to stack, I think cakes for one should be carry the chef's name. Yeah it's a minor thing to many, but Molly's cakes used to sell because players wanted a cake *she'd* made, not just an unmarked lump of sponge and icing. Marked cakes are the one baked thing players have asked me for over the years too :(

I'd prefer to see stacking work by building stacks from non exceptional, exceptional unmarked and exceptional marked stacks rather than lump it all together and pull the mark. But I think it'll be a long time before a RP type fix is put in for this, because there are many more higher priority fixes which will be done first. A pity :(

Oh it kept her tag on it as well. Unless something happened since last weekend. I'll go test now though.

The irony kills me... Seriously!

Here is a picture of me with Jeremy and Leurocian at the UO Town Hall in Chicago just last month presenting them with *drum roll* an 11th Anniversary cake(a modest reminder at the time that we hadn't had anything for the 11th Anniversary).

It even says "Crafted By Tancred RedStar" on the item description tags!

I mean, jeez, is that not irony?

Needs fixing.. wasn't this issue of stackability vs marked uppermost when the idea of stacking food was raised? As in, the point was beaten to death before they even considered coding the change. It was the principle reason we were told - for years - that marked couldn't stack and stacked couldn't mark. They didn't think to check or test something so basic?

Please don't let this bug stand unfixed for years like the hunger screw-up.

They actually put quite a bit of work into it, for example keeping dough to cook one at a time out of a stack but fish steaks still cooked the whole stack all at once. I think this Maker's Mark thing got past because most people on Test Center are there to pvp, not bake cakes. Overall, I think it would be simple, almost effortless, to change back the stacking property on just a handful, or even less, of food items.

I sent in 2 reports of the cakes not labeling right while it was on TC. I've since sent in feedback also. This isn't game breaking but Ya Mama's cakes are something I love to give out at events and it just doesn't have the same meaning without her tag.

BTW Tancred...that was a great cake!!

Cakes are stackable? What's the point of that? Stack 'em too high and you'd get squished cake...

Granted the "marked items can't stack" thing makes sense, but when you hit GM the mark is still optional. I'm sure they could do something with that.

(I don't make cakes often, but the crafter's mark is the most important part of crafting for me)

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who feels this way about Cooking being more or less broken. I wonder if there's a way to adequately express desire to get that line of code put back where exceptional finished food items(not preparations or ingredients) will retain their Maker's Mark once again?

I'm open for suggestions, I've sunk two months of daily clicking and have made enough bread to dam a river to let it all be for nothing.

I have a GM cook but I haven't touched her in so long because the apples and such seemed to stop selling. Now I don't know about you guys, but if I try to stack cakes in RL...They fall over or squish, therefore I'm not sure I see the point in this whole stacking of cakes business. I would rather have other things that make more sense stack then my cakes. That's just me I guess.

It's not a big thing, of course it's not. Nobody pays big money for a chef's cake lol. But I'm not sure making cakes stack is really going to rock anyone's world either :D I don't give a monkey's about stacking things like enchanted apples, but a cake is a decor item mainly, and players like to decorate with, dare I say it "cute" tags. With cakes, the tag is more important than stacking ability IMO. Yes it's minor, it's RP, but I'd still prefer it the old way.

To put it in perspective since you don't sound like a Cooking fan, imagine if your blacksmith could no longer put the Maker's Mark on items it created?

On top of that, Chefs have been able to mark their creations at GM for well over a decade just until 2 weeks ago. This is one (very)minor change they could and should put back the way it was.

And, by the Abyss, yeah, I want my GM Mark back too!

It would be such a minor change, and really just a rollback of code, and recent so it would still be fresh on the mind of whoever worked it, unlike some parts of the code which are ancient and require massive deconstruction just to understand much less change.

i love my cooking skill for apples fruit bowls graps and egg bombs to me its not about cakes with a mark though i completely agree they should revert cakes back to what they were, stacking them was a bad idea. grapes eggbombs apples should stay stackable and if enough of you want to cry for the mark on them hopefully they will think to implement a no makers mark, all stack,:sleep2: marked do not option or some such.

Actually, exceptional crafted foods only came in with the crafting system overhaul, about 7 years back.

This is exactly the sense of accomplishment, the feeling of achievement, that I think they should put back, that I never got after playing with dough for the past 2 months.

I've created new chars and used my stoned cooking skill on the chars so that I can make goodies with certain names, special for certain people. That really sucks that you can't do that anymore.

Do you think they should just "fix" cakes or all the finished food items(not ingredients or preparations)?

It was always good for a laugh or two when I would leave a deadly poisoned cake with my char's name and my famous last words on my corpse when I was PKed. I know it isn't the same as a head (which was supposedly removed to give the game a teen rating), but then you couldn't deadly poison your head either.

I don't see the need to stack finished foods, or at least not at the expense of gm marks. Might as well buy NPC foods if there's no mark on them.

As I understood it, exceptional foods were meant to stack with exceptional as long as the gm mark was the same, and plain stacks with plain regardless of who cooked it.

If they did a mini-fix on this and got it all working properly, I'd ask they look at adding exceptional & maker's mark to more baked items, like bread and so on. But that's likely asking a lot.

I couldn't agree more, besides, "artisan breads" are all the rage now, Panerra is the biggest success at selling a single type of item, bread stuffs, since Starbucks started selling $5 cups of hot water run through some ground beans from third-world countries, lol

btw - love your sig, Fifth Element is my 2nd most favorite movie, evar!
