Difference inbuing and reforging

Hi newbie question here, what is the difference between reforging and imbuing?
Does reforging add properties and inbuing increase those properties? I’ve read a lot of Articles on the subject but it’s still confusing. How do you know what one to use?

Reforging is with RNG you tell the process "direction"what do you want and it chooses from several properties (some of them you don't need) . Imbuing is straightforward. You imbue item with property you need and you have it. But reforging has higher caps.
Some properties you cannot imbue, only reforge. For example 100% elemental damage on weapon or STR/DEX/INT on armor .

Yeah in the example of making elemental damage weapons, you create a plain weapon then reforge it with certain options selected from the reforging menu. You attempt the reforge to get what you are looking for (usually takes MANY attempts).

After you reforge the weapon, you use powder of fortification on it then you can imbue specific properties onto the weapon.

You can even take it a step further and enhance the weapon (using a forged metal of artifacts to guarantee the weapon won’t break).

Learning all of this takes some time, for sure.

is there any advantage of imbuing over reforging? I’m coming back to the game after about 20 years and crafting is so different now.

Yes.
You can make set of weapons with slayer and other properties you need . Quite enough if it is bladed staff or you will use Consecrate weapon. You just imbue ones you buy from blacksmith NPC.

Reforging is little more expensive and resource consuming. Theoretically you can get same or better weapon from loot. But to get needed weapon with needed properties can and will take forever. Looted artifacts are with really high caps. Especially legendaries. But we don't loot every mob. :)
Reforging has less capacity but you spend less time . You reforge weapon you need . So you take only double axes and reforge them. If one will be good it will be double axe. While looted weapon with desired properties can be useless ones (bad specials or too low damage) or even mace when you need a sword.

Imbuing adds some stats in totally controlled way. With 0 random. You want 50% Hit Lighting - you get it. With reforging you possibly can get 70 % . But it can be hit dispell or fireball and not always 70%.

For warriors there are some common weapon templates.
