Desperation - Part 2

Caine Family

Adventurer
Stratics Veteran
The air stood still with silence, aside from the echoes of the guard’s footsteps upon the cold stone floors. The small room Mason found himself contained within held no colors, besides various shades of gray. A candle, which hardly held a flame, allowed little light to reflect off the damp stone walls. The scent of sulphur filled Mason's lungs with each breath he took. The air was thick, and resembled a mid-evening fog. Mason's eyes grew heavier with each passing moment; his vision becoming more blurred.

It had all been a dream, every vivid color a lie. There were no vast mountains of red and orange, green and blue. Even the horrifying figure that appeared from the shadows. It was all his imagination. Instead, Mason had awoken alone, reality becoming his true nightmare. His Covian woven leather armor was torn, the buckles that held it properly were bent. The fierce look he once had was now drowned with sorrow and fear.

The blade had felt so real. Mason could still feel the leather of the blade’s hilt upon his palm. The blade’s strength and knowledge had coursed through his body, filling him with a strange warmth he had never felt before. It was gone now, lost with the fierce determination he once had during his dream.

"Could it have been real?" Mason contemplated to himself.

The cell door was rusted and tarnished with age. The steel though having been crafted many years ago remained strong. Mason knew pure force would not be enough to break himself free. He would have to rely on his abilities as a young mage. It would be his only means to the salvation and freedom he so desperately craved.

"Ex Por." Mason chanted, waiving his hand over the cell door’s keyhole.

It was a mistake to have left the glorious walls of Cove. He was so far from home; his sisters. He missed them so much. If they were here he was sure things would be different. Doubt began to cloud his mind, the thought of never seeing the bright blue sky filled him with fear. His abilities as a mage were still new, unpracticed.

"Ex Por." Mason chanted again, his hand now shook with fear the spell would fail.

The cell door remained locked. His eyes closed slowly, his body slumping to the ground. His mind felt weak, something others had made him feel like in the past. His siblings were right, he could never make it alone.

"Sometimes even the smallest doubt can shake the greatest resolve." A young child's voice spoke softly.

"Who is there?" Mason exclaimed.

"Fear is a disease; hope is the only true cure." The child spoke again.

"Answer me, please!" Mason begged.

"I am a friend, you must try again." The child replied calmly.

Mason stood to his feet, his eyes closed, his mind focused. "EX POR!"
