Desperate to find the normal stuff in stores!

All I want are little things like tip jars! I cannot find them and nobody answers on the lots. Where can I get just normal items?

Tip jars I have seen for less than 100. Just go up the list. Start at the bottom. I never go to the top 10, I find everything but dance floors.

Yep same here I always start at the bottom of the list. I always find everything I need there.......long before I reach the top 20
In most cases better service and better prices as well.

Always remember, because a store is in the top 10, does not mean that they are there for the items they sell, sometimes they are only there because they have a number of accounts that sit the lot. Please NO offense to them,(its perfectly legal with paying accounts, or the CC lots which don't usually stock tso items) intended.

I have a small store, located somewhere in the middle of the list. I try and always have things like tip jars, food processors, telephones and smaller items that are needed in every house. Yeah, I wont get rich, but i am determined to be on that lot and provide whatever the customer needs.

Another problem is that when a new store owner sells old stock from the merge, their prices are much lower on everything, especially things like toilets, showers, stoves and fridges. Once those are gone, we must buy from the new catalog, and those items are MUCH pricier than the merged items.

Many sims think our pricing is too high and we are trying to make a HUGE profit off of them, Not The Case!! We can't sell them items at the old rate. SOOO, store owners stop stocking those items. We have to invest a lot of money to buy for you.

I agree with the previous poster, look at the bottom of the list...or maybe yet come visit the stores that sit in the middle, we are in no mans land LOL

Visit lots of stores, no matter where they are on the list (hate the list) you will find what you need.

I sold a tip jar at my store last night for $10. It's not on "the list" though, so I hardly get any customers unless I advertise. I'll be there later tonight if anyone needs anything....and please remember....if you can't find something you need, ASK. Sometimes stores don't carry what you are looking for but can possibly get it for a decent price. But store owners/roomies can't read minds and can't get what you need if they don't know what it is.

G

Yes, a lot of people don't ask for what they need anymore.

Even though they know we're there, we have said hello and stuff, we're walking around watering plants or something, and we might even have had a chat with them.
Ask away, we always give a price and let you say if you want it or not.

We have an assortment of normal stuff out - we try to buy a little bit of everything and put out for sale. Since people don't see the catalog themselves anymore.

Ok so I am not sure whether you are talking about EA Land or TC3 but have been waiting for an opportunity to say something about the entire "store owners are never there" issue.

For the first few weeks after opening our store my roomie and I were always there, on the lot. We greeted every single customer that came by, made them welcome, offered them food, serenades, etc. Out of 10 people stopping in, maybe ONE would answer back, say hello, whatever. We even put up a sign indicating people should not be afraid to speak, to at least say hello, because behind these sims are real live people. When we have the store open we can't go anywhere together, we must take turns, and when we are alone on the lot there is no sim for socialising unless a customer comes by - only MOST of the customers just pop in and out without saying anything.

These days, if I have to go AFK for whatever reason, to get a glass of water, to put the laundry in the dryer - whatever, I leave a note in my profile. I suspect these are ignored, and anyway I am NEVER far away when the store is open.

I don't expect people to open up a conversation on the store, but at the very least, if someone says hello to you please have the good grace to say hello back! I'm not speaking to anyone in particular as I am sure those of you silent shoppers know who you are

Oh and if the item a shopper wants isn't in view, it takes only a question - if it is an expensive item and I know you can get a better price elsewhere, I will tell you - I often send sims to my fellow shop-owners

I'm glad you are also a host on your lot. My experiences have been in EA land, and the majority of the houses appear empty. When I do ask, I'm ignored. I guess it's hit and miss. I'm always appreciative of good customer service, though. Thanks for being one who offers that.

The whole issue of stores needs to be addressed and its the players that need to do it.

The problems are -
stores open but AFK
everyday items hard to find
new stores unable to compete against merged stock prices
ridiculous outrageous prices on restocking

There needs to be some kind of centralised system where players can go without having to land at every store to find what they want. Also, a place where 'active' store owners can say, I am open and Im here.

My proposal is a simple website with a message board. When a store opens, they just send a message on the site to say im open and when they close they also send a message to say they are closed. Other players can go there and request items they require and any store that is open can respond.

I can set up something pretty simple in about 10 minutes, would anyone be interested in using a facility like this?

ok i have set it up

I have set up an MSN group at http://groups.msn.com/EAlandStoresOnline

Just register there and post when you are online.

Store owners, just post there when you are online, you can advertise any special offers you may have.

This will be very useful for stores that are not in the top 100 as you can tell people that your store is there and open.

Customers looking to buy can post their requirement ther and a store owner will then contact you in game to let you know if they have the item you require

Ok i will defend the stores on this issue ... You get so busy running around Ea Land trying to find the best deals to make a buck that you forget the small stuff , If you ASK you shall recieve . I just looked on my lot and low and behold , i had no tip jars out ...not a big deal . Some out now . I get ppl stuff from buy mode all day long because they ASK , i may not always greet you but 95% of the time im going to . Im not going to put out a bunch of low end objects when i can make better money on the high end objects and i always run into lot limit , i even took out most of my personal use items just to put more stuff out for everyone. I try to keep everything stocked but oh well , im only human .

Starting at the bottom of the list and working your way up is a good tip, as the people there are far less likely to be perpetually AFK.

I'd imagine the fluctuating prices make it difficult for a store to have a large amount of "normal" stuff in stock. I can't imagine having to change prices every other day. Has this been a problem for anyone?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, that has been a problem. There was one day I just decided to forget it and just "sell back" some stuff that I knew wasn't selling and other times just lower prices on some stuff and just accept the loss. Another problem I'm dealing with is the complaints by customers who don't have a clue about running a store that my prices are too high. Unfortunately, I'm only a temporary store until I sell out of stuff and don't have a big inventory, so I don't get as much of a discount on items as other stores and therefore can't sell some things any cheaper than I am unless I want to lose more money than I make. I understand people aren't rich on EALand and can't afford to pay high prices, but honestly, people have to take into consideration the store owner's situation too.

I am trying to resolve the issue of players trying to find stores open that are also active. Or even where afk store owners can check to see who is looking to buy what. I have set up an MSN group at http://groups.msn.com/EAlandStoresOnline
Just register there and post when you are online.
If you are aq buyer just post your requirements there and a store owner can then contact you in game with a price

I have sent messages to all the top 100 stores to advise them of the website. If you are a store thats not even in the top 100 then this will help you even more, as you can let people knwo you are there.

Please put this website address in your bios so that people know where to go

Thanks a ton DGLita for starting that site. I am open most of the day and am rarely AFK.

If anyone needs anything, (even if it's just to green, I would love the company!) please stop in and ask, anything that I do not carry, I offer at my discount to all of my customers.

The store name is PETS n'SIGNS and well... we carry pretty much what the name says
We also carry broken lamps (for your suicidal sim needs!), skinnable frames, pet supplies and exotic pets.

Hope to meet you all!

In regards to the topic of welcoming people to your store lot without a reply from them, I have noticed that more than half of the times that you don't get a resonse it's due to a rough landing. I've said hello to many of my customers that soon after ask if I am there. So now I wait about 10-15 seconds before I greet anyone. It's amazing how many more responses I get.

I for one, do not mind people not replying if i greet them. Even in real life, I myself cringe at sales people when I walk into a store. If I know what I want, I run in, grab it, and leave. No harm done to anyone, and I don't mind if my customers don't feel the need to reply. As long as I know they have been greeted, I am fine with it.

I've seen tons of stores that sell cheap catalogue items, but of course not everyone has exactly what we're looking for at that exact moment we need it lol.. The best way to do it is to shop - I hate shopping in r.l. but LOVE shopping in s.l. I start at the bottom of the 100s, see who's open, read the house bios to see what they carry, then visit the prop. If they don't have what I'm looking for, I'll go up the list to the next open house, read the bio, visit prop.. yadda yadda you get the picture lol.. The only item I had trouble finding was the band object. Was looking all over for one to deco my house - finally found a cheap one after a day or two of searching..

I've been noticing that more and more stores are starting to specialize in cc. So to be able to find something as simple a tip jar, which could be something we could get straight from the catalogue...but i digress, is getting harder. You shouldn't to spend countless hours to be able to find what your looking for.

Specializing in cc
- Yes it's tempting to do; as you make more and more items there is less and less room for catalog items on the lot. Solution would be stackable items that count as one.

Stocking and losing money
- Yes I've done that. Stocked items and then the prices on these items have been halved in the next few days. Customers angry if you price them above retail, how would they know what you paid in the first place. Selling them below my cost now.
The difficult, expensive stocking of catalogue items to get max discount is another reason to switch to cc.
Wear on items should be removed; at least on items that never break.

Saying hello
- I will say hello to everyone. Sometimes I probably say it too soon, and they haven't landed yet. Some computers can take up to 15-20 seconds or more to load the lot.
I will not keep saying "hello and welcome" several times either "just in case they hadn't landed" since it might be a customer who doesn't feel like saying hello. For me it's good manners to respond to a hello, but some people are different than I am. Those people are also welcome in my store.

Stores afk
- I blame the devs that implemented Hide, and didn't follow up / care what consequences it had.

We always have tip jars out because we found people asked for them. But in general, it is hard to anticipate what the customer wants. Add that to what we can afford to buy. Add that to what other stores are selling at pre-merge prices.

Like a previous poster said, some stores sell only custom content. They have no discount on catalog items and no room to put them.

It was a mistake to remove the catalog. People cannot see what is even available. If EA wants only stores to sell things, then let anyone see the catalog at their house. See the prices. Then message stores for a price of the item. A non-afk store will be able to get the business. Is that so hard?

Yes but you won't know that unless they respond, surely? And I do take into account the slow landings, which is easy enough to determine using the Lure command
I say more than hello by the way -- I welcome them, urge them to green if need be, urge them to let me know if they are looking for anything in particular, etc. One particular sim hid on my lot while browsing and not answering. In any case, this isn't a huge issue.
What I do have a problem with are people who come to the store, and, after being told that anything with a price on it is for sale while things that do not have a price are not for sale, will ignore our attempts to point them to the rest of the stores and will beg us to "plzzzzzzzzzzzzzz sell your <insert whatever not-for-sale item name here> to me plzzzzz plzzzzz plzzzzz`` to the point where your overriding reaction is to boot their begging hineys off your lot and ban them. Which is of course not good business practise. heh heh

There are also people who are very shy.
Maybe they just want to look in the store.

Like I said for me it's "good manners" to respond when someone says hello.
But for some people it might be difficult to talk to others or they might not share those values for some reason. Perhaps they just want to be left in peace.

I don't want to force them to reply.
They don't have to share my values to buy my stuff. (Only my taste

Never thought about it, but you are right...How do people know what they want if they don't know what is available? In addition to making the catalog available to everyone again, maybe they can implement a feature where you can look at the catalog at a store and in addition to seeing what there is to buy, they can see the actual prices of things and maybe the discount that the store owner/roomie is getting....That would HOPEFULLY keep everyone and their brother from saying "Your prices are too high". Like someone else said here, they don't know what you originally payed for an item, so how can they judge? Honestly, if I could lower my prices I would, but I have items in my store that cost over 5K (some over 20K). I'm selling them for 1-3K. I personally don't think that is unreasonable. Ok, sorry for the vent.

I think this would be an ideal time to toss in this discussion thread from before:

Implementing a Auction Block similar to Grand Exchange

AND, because most of the posts here are coming from those that run shopping lots..I think your "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" would make a difference as to whether you like this idea or not.

I personally believe this would be great for the sims and our economic balance, but for those of you that TRULY enjoy running stores: I wouldn't want to take the fun from your game. Maybe YOU have ideas that weren't added to that thread, that you could put here??

I know that our game is much different (and IMO much better that the other); BUT it could be implemented in a completely different way, one in which the players are active, rather than having an NPC. For instance, each player could submit the "bids" and "sales items" (including CC from everyone in the game) individually to the storeowner(s)...and the lots would be SO much more fun and exciting with so many people visiting! Maybe the Devs could implement larger spaces for those that want to run the store lots (for the crowds of people, including those that are "yelling out there "garage sale" wares!! Notwithstanding the fact that because the items would be in a personal "box" rather than on property, the object limit would be practically non-existent!! (except for those that wanted to "see" an individual item before purchasing it, which could be "put out" by the store owner so that the customer could look!!

Please don't throw tomatoes *laugh*,

I want to preserve the store thing (and not have a Pez dispenser - item that contains every item for sale in the whole game).
While the Pez dispenser might be easier to browse, it won't be fun anymore.

I love shopping in real life too, especially going into small stores filled with useless, fun, curious items that I can pick up and look at.

Now with cc we will get a lot of those fun stores!

BUT
- I want store lots to be a lot bigger
- It would be great if they automatically grew bigger the more sales people there were
- People could be sales people without being roomies
- That way we could have a store lot and make little "stalls" we rent out to other players. Impossible now due to prop limit

ALSO
- In the future it would be fun if we could grow vegetables and have stores that only sell food they have grown (and perhaps cc garden supplies)
- And stores that are beauty parlors, players upload their own cc hairstyles and cc clothes and put them on players (through a sims2-type barber's chair)

So in a way I am the opposite of your idea with the Pez dispenser, I want the types of stores to be expanded and evolved

we got that notice too. :-/ It's going to be hard to find simple things anymore. I checked the catalog yesterday for tip jars and low any behold I found them at $125 each. So i spent about $1000 to stock a few. I also bought several back drops at $3500 a piece and a week later the price dropped so I guess I can forget about making any profit off of that item. I won't shop from the catalog anymore so if I don't have what your looking for please don't ask me about it.

This is a big problem for store owners. When the skinnable rugs came out, I bought 5 to get the full discount. It was a new object and according to the "dynamic pricing" rule, as we get more, it should go UP, not DOWN. It went down. I will loose money on those I bought.

Three weeks ago, a customer landed and wanted Amish Bookcases. They were over 8k at full price. Even with 58% (my discount), and offering them at my cost with no profit, they were too high for her. I quoted her the prices. Today they are much less. If this customer goes to another store today asking for the same item, does she think I am a liar for quoting her those prices?

In summary, it is hard to stock and price things in advance because of price fluctuations.

It also would be helpful for the everyone to see what is available in the catalog with prices, even though they have go to the store to buy it. It would be nice for the customer to know the "name" of the item when explaining it to the storekeeper.

"I want the brown table." "What brown table?" Many of the new player believe that this game has all offline game items available. We do not.
