Defecting to PvP

exactly how does one do it? I've been PvM for like 10 years, and I've always wondered what PvP was like, but I've no idea how to start. I couldn't very well just walk up to some guy and kill him, I'd feel bad.

Its player versus player, so obviously you walk up to someone and attack.

Yea, you can either just go out start killing, try to get associated with a pvp oriented guild and go out with them and just start killing people. Or get associated with a guild that would be willing to pvp with you, or "duel" or "spar" or teach you. Aside from that...not much other ways.

Now is a very bad time (good time if your a big noob?) to attempt to pvp. 85% of the pvpers are tamers of some sort. So its some form of Dismount (special move or bola) and all kill. Its kinda lame, but maybe with SA it'll change the dragons or something to make pvp a little more enjoyable.

Best thing I can tell you is, attempt to make friends with someone who knows some about pvp and practice fighting/dueling them for a while. Maybe by time you get the hang of it; UO will of changed the pets :p

Yeah, that's what I was gonna say.
Seems more like 50% are some sort of Mage
40% are archer/ninjas
5% Tamers
5% other

But your shard may vary

There's a lot more running around involved.

In PvM, you can often afford to use slow but powerful abilities. In PvP, it often pays to use faster, weaker ones.

For example, casting Lesser Heal a bunch of times quickly will probably be more effective then a Greater Heal. Even if one of them gets disrupted, you'll still be healing some damage, and the healing will start a lot sooner.

Full FCR is pretty much essential if you plan to use Magery.

If travelling with a guild, make sure you stick together. Breaking away to run after some guy will probably get you killed when you run into his friends.

For a new pvper if its possible join a zerg guild.
Zerg guilds are more friendly toward the average joes.
There are basically 3 type of guilds in fel.
1. Zerg guild. A lot of players trammies or whatever in a big group. Little skill need to survive if you dont leave your friends.

2. Elitism guild. Often a small group and often solo with exceptional 1v1 or 1vmany skill. Knows pvp inside and out. But these guilds dont usually accept noobs and whoever is lacking in pvp skill. Many of them also has tryouts of you want to get in.

3. Blue misc. guilds. They just gatefight with gzone and other blues that are there not in zerg/elite guild. They are usually the casuals but they are usually heavily dependent to their numbe
rs(just like zerg guilds) and a guardzone. So other guilds cant sync an attack with chars that arent flagged by them.

Usually zerg guild controls shard better with elites trying to take them out undernumbered.

If you are going to learn pvp, go for a blue guild and learn from there. If your gold is to get loots then zerg guild. You will probably win alot in a zerg guild but you will stay noobish in pvp most likely. You will not be able to get into an elite guild unless you got connections but if you did you will get zerged a lot by all the noobies in a zerg guild.

So find a guild that fits you.

Sassassin really has a solid description there. Join a zerg first, be a nameless faceless entity in the roving wall of meat. After you get an idea of whats going on try to better yourself.

If I was him I'd just make my own guild. Then I'd start charging people tolls to get into spawns. Yeah!

1) Practice practice practice... especially if your going to play a mage. magery is all about timing plain and simple.

2) Items: Have plenty of pots, apples and a trapped box to release para's.

3) DCI DCI and more DCI... the closer you can get your character to 60+ DCI the better. Yes 45 is the max, but if you have 70 DCI, when you get hit with HLD and take the -25 penalty to DCI you will still be at 45.

4) If playing a necro mage, a spell channel -20 mage weapon with DCI is a must.

5) Never ever flag on more than one person at a time, especially at Yew gate.

6) Be careful chasing someone down alone while learning to PvP, its a recipie for disaster. A lot of times they will lead you to another red who will dismount you. Again at Yew gate.

As others posted here, the best thing you can do as a mage is duel with friends to practice. Also believe it or not, liche lords are good to fight to practice your mage spell timing, but not as good as players.

Don't let it frustrate you at the beginning when you can't compete. Most PvPers have been doing it for a long time and know the ins and outs of fighting, especially mages. Expect it to take you quite a few months to become very competitive and a lot longer to be elite.

Finally when PvPing you will die many different ways, some of which you will wonder how they killed you. In most cases they are not hacks or cheats but sometimes they are. after you die to lets say a mage, if your not sure how things happened so fast try to look back through your journal to see the spells they cast on you.

Oh ya, did I say practice practice practice?

No skill or practice needed. Just strap on a sick balanced crossbow and spam mortal/concussion while hugging the gate. As soon as your bar goes below half just chug and run offscreen to heal. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I have been doing it for years and am way ahead in the insurance column :)

If you prefer to play a caster just make a necro with a nice lrc suit and do basically the same. Except that as a necro you will run off the screen BEFORE you take damage(kinda the reverse of the Archer)so that you can precast all your curses.
Ohh and as a caster you must be able to spam all the cool elitist Mage phrases such as "yeah u chased me 10 screens and killed me 5 times today on my Mage but I am still better then u cuz I am a Mage and u r just a crappy Archer"
It's weird but Mages seem to be the only class I know of in Felucca that get regularly owned but still claim pvp superiority.
It seems that the more keys/macros you mash=the less insurance gold you receive :(

Okay some of the advice here is good, some is not.

I will say this. Before you do anything. Observe. Observe who wins at spawns. Observe who seems to win with fewer numbers. Observe who doesn't hide in houses and who seem to be able to drive fear into others.

Join the guild whose members are genuinely better. Tell them the truth. You're interested in pvping. Note quite sure where to start. You want to be good like them and are willing to learn. My advice is to roll up a necro mage in 2-3 days and ask them advice about a suit. your template should be 120mage/120eval/120med/120resist/120spirit speak/120 necromancy.

Is it perfect? No but it will cover every useful thing a guild will want from you. Do NOT start on a hybrid char or a dex monkey. Start where it takes skill and learn from that. You'll learn faster and provide more utility to the guild you join. Learn to cross heal them and change targets quickly to what they call.

If everyone in their guild does not use teamspeak or ventrilo and nobody uses UOAM. They are newbies and probably worse than you as a newbie pvper.

Seems like you dont play a mage.

Currently mage isnt the choice of 1v1 PvP. Dexers are, especially for archers.
You have zero clue about casting spells ect it seems.

Lets assume if the capability for PvP for both a mage and an archer has a cap of 100. This means assuming archer and mages are equal in PvP.
Then...
Mages: 70% Skill, 20% Items, 10% RNG
Archer: 50% Items, 40% RNG, 10% Skill

Archers and dexers are much easier coz of the offscreen where even my grandma can perform just as well. Mages will need a lot more player skill input to be competitive to random noobie archer with godly suits and weapons.

Most real PvPers taken the ability to play a mage proudly. Whereas most people can play an archer decently with the right items.

Give a noobie trammie A a godly mage suit and noobie trammie B with godly archer gears. Trammie A have never playered a mage and Trammie B have never played an archer. Trammie B will pwn trammie A very very easily.

you can always see if theres an rp pvp guild on your shard. some of the best pvpers ive met on atl have been rpers.

As an Atlantic player, and a better one at that, most of the best players on shard barely even speak in game. I haven't seen a talented RPer in many years let alone one that could pvp at the high end of the spectrum.

You might trying checking the RP guilds on your shard. Many RP guilds have RP PvP and they do help train in PvP tactics... Often a much less risky way to ease into PvP. Certainly an easier way to learn more about PvP and you may just enjoy the RP while your at it. (often they teach that too).

It is really shameful to self promote..:p.. But (I may be wrong) I think what Cear meant was Character wise, not ability wise....As in they are "nice" or just have a good general character...but I am not him so I dunno, it would not be a bad idea to try rp pvp and move up later to the crap fest a lot of UO pvp has become (not a slight against any of the pvpers here, but no one can argue how bad pvp in UO is currently) anyway, most of the stuff said in this thread is a good.

wow, with the exception of a few, what a bunch of condescending, non-helpful backhanded remarks!

The info on DCI etc was good. but theres some programs and other valuable information that you'll like:

My advice:

uoassist is pretty awesome. aside from being awesome in terms of making tons of macros/chugging pots/ one button band aids and stuff, its pretty much necessary in regard to yr targeting (last target, target self, is done with mouse whl up and down) plus target queue'ing is how a mage is played
you can also use yr mouse buttons for macros if you change them to key combos in yr widows mouse settings. It goes on and on. I've used the program for years and it seems like people still surprise me with creative macros all the time.

uo automap. its not supported anymore, but it still works, and still legal. Any GOOD pvp clan generally won't even play with you if you can't get in map. (its a tracking system, kinda like a first person shooter style radar system, so you can find yr buddies quick, respond to people who need help, call for help, and my favorite, watching the map for patterns in regard to where yr friends are chasing the opposing team or visa versa, so you can get on an intercept path for the dismount or set up para fields. can't tell you where to get it, but i can tell you, you can still get it

ventrilo/teamspeak. most guilds use ventrillo these days (vent) but teamspeak is fine too. You need a headset, or at least a microphone and a set of headphones. I realize they have these things in pvm guilds too and you might be aware, but pvp is a tense thing.. it tends to **** people off when you can't get in vent.

staying alive is 90% of pvp. Macros you might think are pretty useless in pvm, are a necessity in pvp. 'all follow' macro in conjunction with a re-mount macro can save yr life in a dismount situation. the more ways you have of healing/curing the better. potions are a must IMO. if you cant remove curse, enchanted apples are too. trapped boxes never hurt, even if you have resist.

your pvm template probably won't work for pvp. Talk to a lot of people. Theres a lot of creative templates out there that work great, but mostly its about playing with what yr comfortable with. I've only really played necro mage, so im clueless on an archer, even though they say 'its easy'.

know your spells. Even if you don't play a mage, its very important to know what is (about) to happen to you. for example, if your redlined and someone hits you with a blood oath, its probably not a good idea to hit them.

factions are great. Maybe not for the novice pvper but not only is it fun, the equipment is great, and its cheap. For example, the orny has a +3 MR on it, and it costs like what.. 3k silver or so? you can get that in 15 minutes.

Don't make your own macros. Get help. Don't form bad habits, because chances are, someone does it better than you do.

Its all about x-healing. no seriously, in a team fight, its ALLLL about x-healing. use a next target macro to get yr friends bars quickly and heal them! most of your first months in a pvp guild should consist primarily of healing your guildies. You would be amazed at how big of a difference it can make.

besides that, its really hard. its a steep learning curve and they only way to do it is to jump in and do it. You learn a lot just sitting in ventrilo listening.

edit: if you're not the kind of weird obsessive compulsive types that never gets bored of something like. oh.. say. hugging a gate with an archer all day.. or.. slot machines etc, Id take that other guy's advice and do the necromage template. Its the most versatile template in the game and frankly, in t2a, the archer can't touch it when you have the advantage of fielding, teleporting, stonewalling etc.. Im not saying theres not a use for an archer in your gang, but its incredibly boring, and they don't really 'do' anything. Mages run this ****. A well played mage can kill any template out there.

also, necromage is a hard template to play without proper macros/knowing yr macros through and through. I can give you a lot of help in this area if you PM me yr icq number.

and GET a -20 mage weap with NO -1 casting penalty. even if thats ALL it has on it, and as long as its one handed, its better than any two handed, or singlehand/shield combo cus you can chug and still have proper weapon skill.
You can get a cheap one for around a mil-3mil. They're kindof like hand-me-down shoes that never get gross. Someone will probably give you your first, and you will probably give it to someone else when you get a better one.. and so on until you've got something with some awesome sauce on it.

Best i've seen is a -20mage 20DCI sc no neg. diamond mace. sick moves.

sorry to the mods about the wall-o-text, but some people like to read.
