December’s Best Shot in the Realm, hosted by the Misfits of Society Guild with GM Toni Fierce presiding, was held again at the Skara Brae Fairgrounds on a pleasant Saturday night. This last contest of 2010 would determine the final seat in the Champions shoot-off being held in January.

Salutations and instructions were given by Toni with Debi in place as butte resetter, and the nights Archery Contest was ready to commence. Fifteen archers attended this last chance shoot-off and off in a distance Nicholas the Old was seen viewing the nights actions. The 1st round started and it wasn’t long before most shooters noticed a defect in the left butte which seemed to glow each time it was targeted. This seemed to bother some of these fine archers and the option of only shooting the right butte was offered to all contestants. During the 1st round veteran shooter Richard Lionheart posted the nights 1st robin hood (RH), with Debi soon after posting one of her own, coupled with the dreaded inner ring shot for her 160 total. A new shooter, McNasty, had a butte error and made the required 70 points to move to the 2nd on his re-shoot; while yet another new shooter, Vesta, was not as lucky and was the nights 1st casualty.

The 2nd round was just starting when a late shooter, NightStalker, came and with Baja’s X-Mas a few nights away (and a quick conference amongst M!S judges) he was allowed to shoot. The 2nd round continued with many of the nights archers finding their marks with Frigin Azin, Isabella and Debi all posting RHs as you could clearly hear the wood of the earlier arrow being cleaved right down the middle with its distinctive creeeeack sound! Also during this 100 point required round a number of shooters seemed to save arrows by only using two shots to post their 100 points.

Moving to the 3rd round where only three perfect bulls-eyes will save you and move you to the 4th round, saw many talented archers splitting shots: Frigin Azim (his 2nd), Llama, Richard Lionheart (his 2nd) and NightStalker all posting RHs, while Debi, an early favorite, fell aside after posting RHs in the 1st two rounds. Also moving to the 4th round were Chango and Cherokee. At this point, the nights potential winners were set.

The 4th round, usually the Champion round, where 200 points will win you the month’s crown saw the 1st five shooters all fall short; and then NightStalker stepped up to the buttes, an archer who in months past would probably have been a spectator because of his late appearance, and shot two bulls-eyes and had one arrow to go when, yes when, his 3rd shot split his 2nd arrow and the 2010’s last monthly winner was crowned amongst hoots and hollers and cheers from all the contestants and spectators. NightStalker was given his uniquely engraved bow and his one million gold check and earned the last seat in the soon to be held 2010’s Champion Shoot-off.

Misfits of Society would like to invite all archers of the land to the next Best Shot in the Realm, the first contest of 2011, which will be held at the Skara Brae Fairgrounds on Saturday, January 29th, at 9:00 pm pst (12 midnight est, 11:00 cst).

Congratulations again to NightStalker!
