More people then you can shake a stick at.... many pay but rarely pop in to play.
I live on many shards like Tina, I too pop in each shard, work my characters, do a little hunting and such then go.
46 accounts is getting too much so I have been on a tear stripping down many converting to a castle or 2 here and there and droping houses I dont need and shutting down accounts.
It's not easy.
Why you think?
Well sentiment for one, age of ownership is 2, and well some houses are not that easy to let go of.
I have shut down perma 4 so far, and working on 3 more. Its not just one shard i have to contend with on these accounts. Each has to be gone through from top of shard list to the bottom. Make suare banks and packs and pets are ether transfered to other accounts characters or just left behind.
I have even let 2 keeps fall because it was not worth turning on the account to drop it.
My major problem is I have a large handfull of accounts that are grandfathered. (alot of small houses I wish I could resize but cant, not that there is not the room most are on shards that are super empty but that damn fix one the rest go poof.) Then there is the mains which also some are in the grandfathered list hold the castles. And before you all yell that I own too many of them you best look at my 15 years in uo and understand I have alot of things. Beleave you me I have consolidated alot of things sold off junk and trashed much and still had to go bigger. Yes I have over the years done the 90 day shuffle on many of them, had to. Money gets tight now and then, we all cant forsee the unexpected bill you didnt plan for comming. My accounts are all interlaced with one another like a fine web of strings tug on one and you pull the rest too.
I dont doubt many keep their accounts open in the hopes they can return, hope is a human thing we all have some of. UO is part of our fabric if you have played more then a few years. I called it an addiction the first year it opened. I hate to use the word love to discribe uo as it is a game not a person but I do love uo. I might not play like I use to. (12 to 18 hours a day at times) 15 years does take a toll on a life. Friends who had babys when the game opened now have teens. (shudders) Been there done that - dont want to do it again thank you!
I sat back and did the math on my accounts and this is what i came up with:
If and I do mean IF the dev gave in and gave us a second house I'd only be able to shut down 10 more accounts, well if you pay every 90 on them this equates to keeping them all open. EA/UO would still get hte same amount of $ from me as it is now. I'd be able to cut back only in accounts not cost. Oh goodness! I cant win for loosing hehe
For the ones of you who are looking for a reason to play let me give you mine.
the sheer joy of being able to do it my way....
Wow dont have it, EQ ...pleese, they couldnt give it if they depended on it, DoaC.... get real, Warhammer ....cough was not worth the pixels..... But UO now your talking freedom.

I can hunt anything.....even players hehe
I can fish to my hearts content and walk away with a tidy sum in fish junk (toys)
I can chop the forest down and sztill cant find that damn Frost tree but I do make a good deal off the wood i do get... go figure!
I can mine at 2 am on most shard if I cant sleep... (try vaccuming at 2 am and see how fast the kids yell !)
I can take my thief and go dungeon rummbling ... I dont mind walking out of abyss with a few rares that some nut tossed in the trash..... it has happened.
I can explore every nook and cranny of uo from top to bottom, even learn a few new words in a foriegn language from new friends ...
I can hunt the seeds and plant them .... something I love to do ... the endless growth is wonderfull and a pain in the neck but usefull
Basic fun and games I do miss my friends who use to play with and in uo but there are always new people and well one can be self reliant as well. We are a social creature, and as such the lack of players in uo is daunting and gloomy but when I get down I just have to see a (young) tag and remember all the great stuff there is to do they will find in their days in uo.... What makes the game boring is only your lack of imagination at that time. It go's away. Just look at what you did when you first started... what you think is boring now is just that spark of intrest you had when you first started uo. The awe and wonder of what you can create... all by yourself!
I hate not having my accounts open and able to play soooo I keep them open as much as i can. if I am on Storm or Tenya or Longfellow or Fayn, Welch,or Meguel or any of the thousand of characters I am. I have fun and keep my world happy. Some of you have let times sour you, just go back to your roots and see what made you a uo addict.
Become that person again. let uo be that release for your daily pressure and relax a few, take your shoes off an dig them in the sand of uo's beaches with a drink in one hand and hte mouse in the other.
