Creating a platform bed

I have a futon that I want to turn into a platform bed. Benches don’t work because they don’t line up properly at right angles. Water troughs work well for the blanket section of the futon but not for the pillow part. Does anyone have any suggestion?

I'm afraid I don't have a futon to experiment with, but would this work?

overlapped elegant low tables. To achieve it, place one and raise it up out of the way, then place the other so it's half way underneath, lower the first one down till they meet as shown? Otherwise, could a base built of low stone and paving stones work?
