Crab fishing

It seems to me that crab fishing is a bit fishy. It seems that i fish up 50 %more of the unnamed crabs. Now injoy fishing but crab fishing for quest suck there is no skill gain in it and it take for bloody ever to get your quest crabs. Not to mention the cost of traps and how many you have to have just to complete a quest. Is there a adjustment in the future ?

Yeah. I was one of the first to get to 110 fishing (doing enough quests to bind 8 105s), but crab fishing has driven me away from doing any fishing quests at all. Well, crab fishing and the fact that higher end PS seem to be completely missing from the game. That's pretty sad considering the short period that the booster has been out.

I'd honestly wait till they do a tweak to do more quests. You could just stockpile crabs in the meantime.

Yeah, crab fishing is a pain in the arse. Atleast while fishing i can read a book, watch TV or surf the boards until i hear a serpend sound. When iam done with fishing i have something worth the time spent .. mibs, nets, maps and some pearls. With crabbing it is different. 3-4 hours wasted on the one kind of crab i currently have 0 from and need 20. I have to stare on the screen a couple hours because that bloody trap might bob and i need to click as fast as possible. How much fun is that?

Iam doing what Uvtha said. Stocking up on fish until the quest rewards changed. Somehow i can't even get myself to stocking up crabs. It's so boring and in the end all i'll get is some ultra rare book or some bait.

You don't need to click as fast now. I lay out 12 using a uoa macro from my rowboat. When they start bobbing I collect all 12 in, including any that don't 'bob' in the set. They won't sink unless you leave them in long enough to wait for a second bob.
While leaving them longer might get you 2 crabs/lobsters in some pots, you'll lose some pots too so, to me, that doesn't seem worthwhile.

Why does everything got to be so easy in the game? i like how it's set up, i don't mind putting it the time or hard work for something... but i don't find crab fishing that hard.. i put no less then 200 traps out at a time and let them sit for 15 to 20 mins and i get 20 of anything i want in a few sets..

Uhu ??

Read a book ? watch TV ? surf boards ???

Traps fishing maybe needs a little fine tuning but I like it as it is because it needs players to do, aheam, traps' fishing.........

Personally, I would never want Traps' fishing to be ever changed so that one can trap fish while doing anything else but play the game.

There is skill gain in trap fishing, I gmed my fisher on traps. Not sure at what level it stops but I just hit 102 and got a gain off them yesterday. I don't bother doing straight crabbing anymore, I just do a set of 100 every time I sail around to Papua. I usually lay down a line of 50 while going slow forward then run to the other side of the boat and lay 50 more back to my starting point then pick them all up. Doing it that way I lose about 10 to 15 traps and have about 6 to 8 empty traps and the rest have something in them, usually at least two crab or lobster. This way I don't get bored or frustrated with crabbing and I still can stock up my crabs/lobsters and finish quests for them. Yeah sometimes I don't get what I need to finish an order but it can wait till the next time I get around to Papua to try again.

I don't think this thread is about crab fishing being easy or difficult - honestly there is no difficulty in it at all - and nobody asks for it to become "easy" .... it is rather the amount of time you need to to fish up a decent amount of named crabs and lobsters, combined with the monotoneous clicking you need to do to get the trap into the water, then to get the trap out of the water when it *bobs* and another click to empty it.

It is one of the most boring activities in the game, poorly rewarded, - and combined with the fact that we still have no answer to the question when the drop system for fishing power scrolls will be changed so there is more than a theoretic chance to get a fishing power scroll - for me the main reason why I stoned my fishing skill and rather do some treasure hunting again.

I agree, not enough named crab/lobsters for the amount of traps you put out. Out of 60 traps laid out AT LEAST 20 will come back empty, that leaves 40 traps. Out of the 40 left 1/2 will be plain. That leaves only 20 traps that might contain something good. The chances of getting the type of crab lobster you need out of the last remaining 20 is slim to none. Just say I get one snow out of the 20. That leaves only 19 more to go for the order. Granted you can lay out more traps, you can leave em out later for the 2nd bob, and then just replace the traps you lose everytime, but the whole point is, you don't get much of the named crabs for the amount of traps, time and effort.

The right way to crab fishing is:

- Drop the trap
- Wait for "bob"
- Take it back

Sometimes you could lose some traps, but you will gather more lobsters...

You can get even more than that. I've only gone crab fishing a couple times, but when I did, I did something like this:

Chad's 9 Easy Steps to Crab Fishing

Step 1: Facing West/East, on the left side of your boat, drop 5 traps.
Step 2: "right one"
Step 3: Drop 5 more.
Step 4: "right one"
Step 5: Repeat steps 1-4 two more times.
Step 6: "left one" x6
Step 7: Wait for the first trap of the original 5 to sink.
Step 8: Gobble them all up.
Step 9: Success!

You'll lose a handful of traps (of the 30), but I've definitely gotten at least 3-4 crabs/lobsters per trap and maybe even 5 or 6. Just set them all, let them *bob* all they want, and wait for the first to sink before you gobble them all up.

so what you saying is once a hour you have 20 of everything as im reading this correctly? may i ask how many traps are you losing? im trying to fine tune my crabbing thx:party:

While UOA has helped me with the setting of the crab pots....I still can not get it to be reliable. No matter what I do,I keep getting the message in red from UOA about "Failure to find item" or something to that effect. If I dbl click a pot when it says that it launches that pot and moves on. At least it takes most of the targetting the water out of it but still.... I can only manage to get 8 to set with minor difficulty. Whats your secret? Am I missing something? Only thing I can think of is the macro gets messed up a lil because they always change the direction in your pack. One that faces north can come up facing east. Very hard activitiy to reliably macro out alot of extra clicks! I end up setting it as "use item type" and "target relative" with a 1500 pause

Ah -- so the way to do crab fishing is to actually wait for future bobs hm. So like waiting a few mins on the lot. Explains why I'm not getting the same quota via new system.

Old way seemed a lot easier ... I guess new way you just have to wait like 2-3 mins.

Wish you could buy traps in more than one place than docks.

Here's a neat program you can use for timing stuff (I didn't make): http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/mintimer/

I use that from time to time :)

I also made my own in Flash lol but I don't think I have that file uploaded.

TO be honest, i find fishing and crabbing themselves a bit on the boring side, but i enjoy the "chase" to do the quests.

My technique is easy, but i lose a lot of traps this way. I get 50 or so traps in my pack, on my ship, and slow forward. I drop a line of traps, and then return to the start of the line.

I then read stratics for a couple of minutes, then go back and slow forward again and gather up the traps. Sure, I lose a bunch of the traps, but it is far less boring for me that way.

I use UOA and set 45 traps at a time.
use item type
target relative
pause 1000
use item type
target relative
pause 1000
use item type
target relative
pause 1000
right 1
pause 1000
right 1
pause 1000

Repeated this until I had 45 traps and at end said left. You need 45 traps facing the same directions to do this. I have 2 macros set, 1 for each direction. Before I start macro I get my boat next to something blocking it on the left side so when I am done setting traps and say left it will stop me where I started. Still trying to figure a way to make UOA pick them up for me, no luck.

Crab fishing is pointless, tedious and has absolutely NOTHING to do with any kind of skill.

Nice idea, poor implementation.

I am not a big fan of crab fishing and have complained many times about it....

One major thing I'd like to see is the plain crabs and lobsters added to the turn in at the library for Fishermen.

I'd also like to see some of the new "rare" fish added as well.

I prefer the original lobster fishing, hated losing all the traps like mad but I'd still rather have it that way. The way it is now makes it ridiculous trying to lobster fish from docks.

I've completely given up on crab/lobster fishing, that is unless they deiced to fix it. The rate is too slow. Hope they do adjust it back.

Crab Fishing in UO, clicking on the bobbing buoys = Computerized version of playing Whack-A-Mole, minus the fun.
