[Gardening] cost of selling plants

I have noticed that veteran gardeners on Origin are still selling plants of all types except the trees and rare plants for around 500 gold. I don't really understand this since the price of everything has gone up. It costs me 3000 gold per plant or better in potions (greater strength 2 per day + any cures or poisons)for the complete 18 day cycle. Unless u roll ur own, potions are selling for 8000 gold per keg. Are the other shards selling plants for higher or is this the norm?

On my shard I can usually find potion kegs for 5,500... not sure about plants, since I haven't found any dedicated plant vendors yet.

I don't use greater strength at all, I just water, poison, and cure as needed. I don't usually grow up to 18 days unless I'm getting resources (which is a way to recoup potion costs) or need the seeds for whatever reason.

Technically in order to replace a plant you only need grow it 10 days to get the first seed. So your costs to grow a single plant and its replacement seed should be potions for 10 days. With fertile dirt that can be cut down a little bit. Having your own alchemist cuts the cost of potions in half (not counting labor, just reg cost). Buying your regs in fel faction towns further reduces the potion costs.

Now growing plants for all 18 days for the seeds will net you a seed of renewal every 1 in 25 plants I think. Which should recoup costs quite easily as they can go for a minimum of 100k each.

Thanks Sarsm for the tips. I know that there are ways to reduce cost. My point is that the vendor price has been 500 gold for as long as I have played UO (on and off since 2000). Right now I just clip them and store them for use later. I know that there is a huge shortage on Origin of plants and I am just not interested in giving them away.

Crosspoll the plants and evt white/black seed will sell or you can grow them and clip them.
Also the seed of renewal will sell for a nice price if on normal shards so that should help your business too.

Considering there isn't one dedicated full time plant vendor on Origin now that I'm aware of, 500 is way to cheap (IMO based upon my time there and years as a gardener) to sell any plants for. Even colored cacti (which rarely ever sold before) has a use now. I couldn't keep plants in stock and only dropped the price at the very last so I could get off the shard with my gold.

If it were me, I wouldn't sell any plants below 1k there. You might also consider there may be a run on red, pink and white plants with Valentine's Day coming up and possible deco contests.

Now thats a hot tip. Sorry to learn that you will not be returning to Origin as the shards number one gardener. Many people will be dismayed and saddened to learn this.

:) Thanks Yellow Beard. I still have to move the rest of my stuff, but RL has a way of rearing it's ugly head. The prices will fluctuate, of course, but I never moved more than a a couple hundred gp either way.

The best thing to do is get a nice stockpile of seeds which is much easier now that the newer seeds can be identified except for the hedges, cypress and hops. Green thorns and orange petals are always in demand. Last year I had a regular customer who wanted 500-1k thorns at a time and she kept increasing the amount. That's not normal, but requests like that and 50+ plain campions at a time prompted me to constantly have certain things on hand.

There's a wealth of info and tips on this board and someone is always willing to help. When I get some time to log back in to Origin, I'll let you know if I have any seeds or plants left. I can't remember what I kept, transferred and tossed.
