Coronation and Old School Armor

So tonight was Chesapeake's turn in the coronation of the new king, and the "side story" I found the most fascinating was the look of some of the "old school" armor (read: non leather). Sure, it was just old accounts/chars there for the (spoiler), but it meant seeing the style that I used to sport on so many characters. Personally, I preferred a mixed set of Dull Copper ringmail and platemail, with a charcoal grey kilt and red sash (yeah, buddy!).

Seeing the "old school" armor look has me incredibly excited for the changes to the armor system. Hopefully, the balancing works well for my characters, but if not, I have a feeling I will be choosing style over properties for at least some characters (esp. the swordsman).

That is all. Just wanted to share my excitement!

Metal/Plate Armor Ideas, Proposals, and Pitfalls | Stratics: A Career Path in Gaming

Remember also that the great value of leather armor goes back far longer ago than we think; remember when the "new leathers" were really new and could out-perform most heavy archer suits with no dex penalty?

Also, with Imbuing, the degree to which you'll have to sacrifice performance for wearing metal armor can be exaggerated. While some swore to me that the metal armors were disadvantaged numerically going on, those who so-swore have not materialized in the thread. So it seems to mostly, not exclusively but mostly, be a matter of meddability.

Galen, I read through the first couple pages of that thread and enjoyed many of the posts. It is a great thread with great ideas.

Yea, I never cared about the PROs of Leather - I am no "perfectionist"-gamer that has to get the max out of everything. One of my oldest chars is a Mace Fighter wearing a chainmail tunic and platemail arms and leggins. As a weapon he has a large war hammer. Everything dyed with a metal dye tub - looking pretty awesome. Unfortunately, I can´t log in for a screenshot atm. The golden appearance of the metal armor looks pretty nice with the crimson, the sash and the ranger´s cloak (dyed with deep blue clean-up pigments).

For my Swordsman I use a Basilisk Hide Breastplate. So, I had to chose Dragon Scale Armor - other Armor Parts don´t fit. Looks awesome, too...

And - of course - I don´t use robes/garbs and alike on these chars - I would destroy the look... I hate the uniform look of many chars in UO: Everyone wearing either robes or these cloaks (of life e.g.). Not very inspiring to me. I can understand that people want to make a perfectly effective char. But to me, a perfeclty looking char is much more important ;-)

Would be really great to get metal and dragon scale armor improved soon - and we need a transparent pigment for these terrible garbs, robes and shrouds ;-)

Can only show the Dragon Scale Armor - try to show the Metal armor later... My first try with pictures, hopefully it works... This was before I dyed the stuff with the Clean Up-Crimson Dye... Dark Red Natural is nice, too

Eaerendil, I couldn't agree more about the robes! UO has such a rich history of customization in all facets of the game. Weapons, armor, HOUSES, character builds, etc. etc. The list goes on and on. Only, what's the point of customizing your armor set if you're just going to throw a boring robe over top of it in the end?

A transparent hue would be cool. I also saw a suggestion in a recent thread, somewhere, to make a pouch for robes. Then you could get the perks of a robe without needing it to cover up your awesome, customized, armor.

Here is the second example. I know, taste is very individual - maybe some like it :)

outside of the hulk hands i agree... robes make everything boring.
