Hello.

I am looking at starting UO soon and have been reading the Stratics forums a bit to try and decide what type of character I would like to play.

The Archer class looks like it could be fun and maybe the class for me. As I have no idea about UO I was looking for some advice on what the best way to proceed would be in creating an Archer that would be able to stand alone as a good character. I am not a pvp'er and so would be focused on killing npc monsters.

The problem that presents itself is what types of Bow / Armour should I aim for? Should I go Human or Elf? Can an archer do well in PvE or shoudl i look at a different type of class?

Please forgive my questions which I am sure are very basic to you experienced players, but I would appreciate any sound advice you could send my way.

Thanks

OldFella

My apologies, just found the Archery FAQ.

Should have put my glasses on.

No apologies necessary. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask, that's what we're here for. I'd suggest you set up your template like this:

120 Archery
120 Bushido
100 Tactics
100 Healing
90 Anatomy
90 Resist
80 Chivalry

80 str / 25 in / 125 dex

This should have you able to take on most of the high end creatures. As you reach each year mark on your account, you recieve an additional 5 skill points you'll be able to add to your template, and at your first 6 months, you'll receive a one time +5 to your stats also.

Thank you for your reply. Whilst I have installed the game I have not yet made a character due to waiting to find out how the server populations are. I am looking for a home where a new player can get along with a decent community to fall back on if I need to shout for help!

With regards to armour and weapons, are there any obvious choices that a new player should look towards getting in order to proceed more efficiently?

Where are you located? That would determine which of the higher population shards we could suggest you start out on.

For armor for a brand new player, I'd suggest you try to get a set of GM made Barbed Leather from an established player, or one may feel generous and set you up in a fairly decent suit. It will give you enough protection to start out with until you can both loot better armor, and earn enough gold to buy some of the better pieces. Once you get your template well on it's way, then you could start hunting in the Legacy dungeons to start collecting the Virtue Armor Set, which drop in those dungeons, and provide a full 70's resist suit, although one of the pieces, the Cloak of Humility, is only available via a quest. For weapons, you should be able to earn enough gold fairly quickly to buy some of the minor artifact bows from player vendors. Most of them sell for 5k or less.

Mr Graham sir you are a star!

I am from England, so have been looking at the Europa server but if an American one would be better then I would happily make a character there. The only problem I could forsee with that situation would be the time zone difference.

Once again, many thanks for your advice and swift reply!

I do have one small question regarding character creation.

It seems that I have to make a custon character to follow Mr Graham's advice. I am a little bit confused as to the best way to proceed would be. I see that I can put a ceretain amount of points into 3 specific skills. Which ones should I take and how much should I put into each?

I would suggest the Europa shard, as it's the more populated of the 2 European shards.

To answer the question in your second post I would suggest you choose the Advanced Character option and set skills to this:

49 Archery
49 Healing
1 Anatomy

Set Strength to 30, Dex to 50 and Intelilgence to 20 (then lock INT for now until the other stats are built up higher), or as close to these numbers as you can get. It's been quite some time since I created a new character, and don't remember exactly what the limits are. I'm thinking 45, 45 & 10 may be the highest you can get, but again, not sure.

As soon as you enter the world, lock all of your skills except those you want to raise. You can get to the skills gump by clicking on the Paperdoll option, then clicking on Skills. This will bring up your Skills gump so you can access each skill. Go to Combat first, and lock Focus first, or you will start gaining in it immediately. Once you get this done, go to the Archery trainer and the Healing trainer and get the quests from them. They give some nifty rewards for when you hit 50, and since you'll already be very close to it, it won't take you long to already get yourself a couple of nice things to get you started. Then go around to each of your other skill trainers and get the quests from them.

Being a brand spanking new player. It would also be a good idea to create a crafter character. (Some players call these characters "mules") This is so you can make your own armor weapons and other useful items.

My first suggestion would be a tailor. You can make a decent amount of gold while you build up your tailor and when you reach legendary you can build the types of armor you need for yourself.

I don't mean to steal the thread but this can be very useful because building an adventure can cost a lot in terms of time and game gold. Having a means of making gold without adventuring is very important in the early stages of the game.
