Communication with, say, Japanese / Korean / Chinese UO players?

Hi fellow Straticians,

recently, I came to know this foreign, non-english speaking UO player in my shard. Thing is,we had managed to just get by communicating with bits and pieces of simplified english.

Now, I want to know if there is an easier way to translate a foreign language typed in UO on-the-fly. I play in KR, and I think UO2D may have a translator built into it(I could be mistaken though).

Any advice from anyone regarding this?

To be honest, the first thing I did was turn that translator off because it lagged the client so badly.

Dunno if it's used in KR at all or not though.

I'd say your best bet may be to keep going as you are and teach each other your languages (you learn theirs, they learn yours) in the process.

The language translating feature known as Systran was removed from the game options in the AOS release. This feature will no longer work in any version of UO.The game language is now determined by the operating systems language setting.We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

No, you can't use the character sets, you'd have to use the, I guess, phonetic versions of their words typed in.

As FD stated, they apparently took the program out.

As it was, it was always a laggier than hell buggy thing anyway.

Not sure I have an easy answer for ya.

However it was a true feature that tried to make the game universial, ahead of its time and I think still unmatched in the world of MMORPG's.

I think the advice of Dermott is the best for you and us all.

It is the most important to try to communicate each other.

I think it would be wrong to use translators as a main tool to communicate. They display often funny sentences to be laughed at, and might cause even discommunication.

Or, rather, please wait for your friends to reply you with patience. It would take a pretty long time for us Japanese to reply you in English, so please wait!

Wait and try to communicate, this is the best, I think.

Well if you set up your keyboards secondary input method for japanese you could input the character sets. As far as actually understanding what you are typing...the japanese keyboard is set up very similar to the english. sound out the word in japanese, type it in, and see how your friend replys.

I actually use this method for email communication with my inlaws. granted for anything major I grab the misses.

Awww...I'm sorry to hear that SYSTRAN is no longer available.

My first shard was Hokuto. It was the server with the best ping on the list, so I picked it, not knowing it was mainly a Japanese shard...I was in for a *pleasant* surprise!

I have wonderful memories of playing there...my English friends in KOJ, as well as all the wonderful Japanese players I met. I bought an English/Japanese dictionary, and it helped me communicate when SYSTRAN gave the odd translation or two. I could only speak phonetically, as I didnt have the time/resources to delve into understanding Kanji. Everyone I encountered seemed pleased that I tried to speak to them in a native language, even though I'm sure I did a bang-up job of it. =)

Anyway....my suggestion would be to get a little dictionary if you don't already have one. It was really helpful for me! ^^
