When combining BODs can you combine items that don't quite match? For example will a Large verite BOD accept a valorite small?

You cannot combine Valorite smalls to a Verite Large.
I've seen claims made like this before, and I've never been been able to replicate the claims.
But yes, you can combine exceptional smalls to a normal large, but there are few cases where this is beneficial (one I can think of right off would be 20-count normal horned bone LBOD, where the large Ex is a 120 tailor PS and the Normal is a CBD, IIRC.)

Will a large platemail BOD take anything other than a plate helm? Close helm perhaps.
Only iron and plain leather can be replaced by colored
