Rares Fest Chesapeake Rares Fest 2015: Gypsies, Goblins, and Pirates, oh my!

Hello everyone.

EDIT: Please note that this event has been postponed until September.

Following a meeting this evening with the community of Chesapeake, I would like to invite everyone to come to Chessie for the next rares festival. This will be the 21st rares festival.

• Specific dates will be announced when they are finalized; at the moment, June 19-27 looks likely. We are now planning for September 2015.
• The theme will be "Gypsies, Goblins, and Pirates, oh my!".
• The location will be announced closer to the first day of the festival.

The goal of this event is to help to rebuild the links between the people of Chesapeake and all of the rares collectors on every shard. It seems that most of the interaction the people of Chessie have with us happens at events, while most rares collectors, if they visit Chessie, only ever see our rather vigorous PvP side - i.e. our general chat. This has created an unpleasant situation for both sides.

The previous 2 Chesapeake festivals, in 2010 and 2011, were successful in addressing this when it previously was a problem. Therefore, this fest is in the hopes that, by giving everyone a chance to meet outside of EM events, we can begin to rebuild some ties between the two communities.

An Introduction to Rares Fests: (borrowed from @blend)

It was devised by some volunteers of this forum.
DVI who performed the 1st time of the beginning in 2008 told me.
"The greatest reason why I perform this festival is strengthening of a community.
Forum member is active in different shards.
In order to strengthen a community, We gather at one place."​

The focus of this fest is intended to be on growing the rares community while improving relations between Chesapeake and the other shards, with "stuff" a secondary concern.

Personally, Ive been harassed enough by certain people on that list, simply for going to their events. But goodluck to everyone involved.

This is all extremely hypocritical too. People on this list that argue every day for Shard Bound rares (Or the removal of EM drops all together), yet you are now depending on THIS community to help bring attention to your shard + help your shard's economy.

I have nothing against one being hosted on Chesapeake, hell to be perfectly honest, I like the idea.

However, as Promathia stated, some members that are apart of the staff have belittled this community on several occasions.

Called us nothing but greedy, x-sharders that are destroying the game and it's players.

I've personally been told by some Chesapeake players that I am not welcomed to their shard or events. Now given the fact I was involved in calling out things that were obviously being abused as favoritism, however, it doesn't change the fact that I was belittled by people who know not what they were talking about.

I hold no grudge towards anyone, as I do not play that way. When someone does me wrong, I forgive, move on, and won't have anything to do with said person. It's not holding a grudge, but merely avoiding future conflict where it might occur.

I wish the Chesapeake staff luck on their upcoming Festival. I am going to graciously pass though.

However, I will donate 100M towards the festivities if the staff does so choose to accept.

What if those, from the chessy forums conversation,who made attacks on the rares community gave an apology to the community. Would this help ease some tension?

@Alexander of ATL. , as I said in a different place and time, you and anyone else is free to visit Chessie - indeed, let me go a step further and invite you to come visit us. (And Alex, If I recall, I even tried to talk you into moving there at one point last year.)

What the general population of Chessie object to is a small number of event attendees, from shards other than Chessie, who were repeatedly disruptive at events, and who have belittled and outright attacked our EMs and local players in and out of game. Some few of these event players also blatantly cheat at the events, some of which @Olcher has documented elsewhere.

Players from Chessie make up at least a quarter of the active rares collecting community, here and in game. The vast majority of rares collectors are not the ones who have created problems on Chesapeake. Not even every event attendee is the problem. But those few event attendees have created a terrible situation between Chessie and this community. A fest brings together everyone from both communities, not just those few event attendees, and it does so in a far less stressful situation than an EM event. As stated,

So let's give it a try? Chessie is a good and fun place; besides, where else will you find pirates or goblin running for governor?

I for one will be attending. Even though I may disagree with a few members of the Chessy shard/staff i wont let that get in the way of having a good fest. Put aside your differences and enjoy the occasion, perhaps rebuild a bridge or two instead of loosing a few more.

I cannot speak for others but I am involved in to try and ease tensions and close the gap forming in the UO Community. Our community is getting too small to hold hostility towards each other and expect that new players would want to join. It is what it is, we can continue to take shots and drive a bigger wedge in or try and work together and make a community event. I would prefer to see us all work together than against each other at this point. If it comes down to people not attending because of myself then I will step away and let someone else help out. We really need to put the past in the past and work towards something else. This is not about drops and events, but trying to get everyone together. I have kept a low profile as of late to help end the arguments and I have stayed away from volatile threads. This one however is about something good that can happen and I am all for that. For those that hold ill feelings towards me, please PM me and maybe we can end the hostility in a healthy way so that this can move forward.

Huh? I "Gunga Din" was Co-Host (Along with DVI, Stoned Mariner and Lineman) of the last Rares Festival on Chesapeake at Merxmere. We never had any of the problems or issues you mention. I'm not sure what happened recently, but back then we just tried to put on the best Rares Fest possible. No politics involved. We weren't successfully addressing some PVP banter or crying about EM event drops.

Just wanted to make that clear.

Just to let everyone know...I'v got nothin but LOVE for the rares community..I consider myself to be pretty even keel when it comes to relationships with rares collectors...so I'll be attending both.

We will try, but as found with the Izumo and Europa fests, it's hard to schedule to handle +11 (Japan), +14 (Oceania), and -6 (Europe) at the same time.
