What would you do to make death meaningful?

Random idea that pop into my head

Puzzles quests maybe a complete town that you only could see if u was a ghost invisible to all the living

maybe that is too complicated

This is more basic the entrance to the city of the dead u only could see like a ghost and where the entrance would be is random
what one would do there i donno i did not think that far  what do ghosts do ? dance?

That would be good music for in The Abyss. It even looks like it's in the background there. A ghost is most likely a powerful memory that can manifest itself physically similar to the face of GOD in a cloud or an evil hand of a demon on a cloudy day when there's thunder and lightning. Just some type of deep sub conscience reality. It's strange that other people can see what you see inside your imagination by looking at an object that is very abstract but then suddenly you're able to see things that are not there, usually people. You can see them in curtain patterns. You can see them when the paint peels off the wall. You can see them in shadows. It's this connection that breaches the sub conscience that allows one person to see another person's memory and although I have never seen a ghost ship it makes you wonder what the possibilities are of an actual manifestation of such scale.

I know that fear can also trigger groups of people to see things that are not really there or at least not within the physical world but that does not mean there cannot be a physical reaction that bleeds into the real world. Almost as if you look at things in a backwards sense, it can become scary because then that realm becomes the physical world and this dimension becomes the one that is pushed on or controlled in a sense.

It's like looking in a mirror and wondering if what you're seeing is actually another world. Just because you can break the mirror doesn't mean it hasn't broken on the other side and we can say a picture is just a picture but when we look at it, it is real. It seems to capture something, a memory in a physical form that not only you can look at, the creator of the memory but other people. People who were never there.

So, I guess a ghost is there as a memory. We don't let go of it. We don't forget about them. So, they manifest themselves as they were when they were alive. Their ideas, like a photo, their memories somehow come through. Who they were, what they did. I guess time could even be twisted like seeing a ghost and at the same time it's dejavu and now you're in this paradox twilight zone where time is telling you its' never happened before but your experience is saying, that you remember this well and then you begin to quote what's going to happen next and you begin to mix with insanity itself the reality falls away inside your conscience mind but to continue you must rationalize the simple memories and the fact that you are powerless against time.

But it makes you wonder about death. I think it would be nice if you had the option to go to heaven or maybe if your character was evil it would go to Hell. I wonder if the designers ever thought about it because when you think about a healer, it preserves the living but ressurection brings back the dead, even though we're mixing it, reincarnation, some kind of second chance, you would think a healer would only heal, what is left to heal once you are dead?

It doesn't make sense to wonder as a ghost. I mean imagine the reaction of a doctor if a ghost appeared infront of him and said, Heal me!

It would be interesting though, you're given the option and I guess you would essentially be ressurected and sent back. Like you said, perhaps some type of puzzle, ported into a world or a mystical plain where it would still be black and white and maybe it would be possible to do things. Where you would actually have your armour and weapon or the ability to cast spells, perhaps, in limitless forms, some type of soul driven over drive. Maybe in Hell you confront the demon and once you slay it a door is opened that you can pass through which places you back where you were, alive and well and perhaps in heaven, for good karma characters, you would have some type of riddle of Compassion or Virtue and if you did not beat the demon or if you failed to answer the question, you would return as a ghost, kind of like, a one shot deal that gives you the opportunity to kind of be ported instantly to a place where you can get a rez rather than wondering as a ghost for a half an hour or possibly, forever.

Ever notice how folks who argue for this kind of thing almost always set up a dichotomy between their own ideas on one hand and "you want easy button!" on the other?...
I think it's sometimes hard for people to find common ground. The key should be to make things more fun. The problem is there is a diverse playerbase for the game. Some people think it's fun to grind the same monster for 2 hours straight hoping for an uncommon drop. Others play in 20 minute increments and would find such a task off putting. Is it really an easy button when you simply reduce the time it takes to achieve something? The AI is still the same?

The problem is the game is providing just farming with no purpose...
A general death penalty is not the solution to this problem. The problem is the purpose and I don't think UO ever had a big end game purpose in mind.

I have mentioned this in another thread, UO could be vastly interesting again if they stuck to developing the virtues. A virtue a year would give us 8 years of exciting UO to look forward too. While we are getting this idea in piece meal fashion as they revamp some dungeons, imagine if they revamped everything that had to do that virtue, the dungeon, the city, the countryside spawn, the weapons and armor, the way of thinking about the virtue etc. They could even make it adversarial, where you could chose either side of the virtue to master and play. PvP would be an integral part of the game and story line too.
