Cannot dig up a plain treasure chest

I am building a newbie t-mapper. I have built them before. Currently she has over 50 points of skill in both cartography and lockpicking, and plenty of fighting skills for spawn. She can read a plain map, but cannot seem to dig one up. The error message is "you can't mine there." I know I'm in the general area where the map indicates, so why can't I dig for it?

You need to either use the context menu on the map or the old way was:
double click shovel, target map, then target the ground. You're missing one step I think?

Right click the map your using and choose "dig here".
