Can Origin's History Be Recorded In A Player-Written Book Collection?

Crystal and I have been having a discussion about the potential of compiling a collection of player written books and having them housed in a common library for Origin. We would like your input and ideas.

This would not be an event or a contest, simply people taking the time to write and share a bit about:

Their history on Origin in story form. Anything from their first day, and how difficult it was to start all over; to their friends and different guilds that were here and helped them out; or just their experiences learning to locate items and get items needed to play from the perspective of a newly created character.

The stories could be written into ingame books. Or they could be submitted here on the forum, or emailed to me [email protected], and I could copy them into books.

In order to get the word out and perhaps help build the collection, we would ask that people pass the word to players who don't utilize Stratics and other forums, so that they would have the opportunity to tell their stories, too.

We know that Ghost_Writer (Michael Wolf) is currently working on Origin history books. This is idea in no way meant to detract from that, but possibly enhance his efforts with Origin players' experiences.

Anyone have some thoughts, ideas?

Beat me to the punch. I plan to turn the books over to the EM's tomorrow night at the meet-n-greet. After that I planned on posting the contents of said books here for everyone to review, possibly post any corrections, and save them the time of reading them in game.

I have already put a note in the index book about adding to the history. Reality is I only have a few of the main events for the first 2 years of Origin about 7 of them. There is much left to document. There will be about 9 books, first is an index, this is assuming I can actually fit one event per book and none run over. I've been working my butt off trying to get them ready for tomorrow night, just about done with the text, all that I really have left is to transfer my notepad files into books tonight.

I do believe the EM's will be happy to add other history books to the collection anytime you guys want to write one.

Lastly I plan to add in a section to the post on the boards on tips and tricks for transferring your knowledge to game books.

Maybe the collections should be split into two different catagories as GW has the history on some of the events recorded and these history books we speak of are more of a "story" type of book depicting players experiences.

One catagory for "The History on Origin Events" and one for "The History of Origin Players."

Just a thought. :D

My suggestion, wait and see what I have. When I say events I don't mean shard events per say, one of the articles I'm putting in is about the gamer's charity auction for example. Crystal, you were a reporter before I was, and probably have some useful information to fill in some of my blank spots like when I was off alfa testing ML.

Also it would probably be nice if we all follow the same format. Once I publish these they will be open for corrections and suggestions. One tip is put everything into a plain text file first, like notepad, so if I need to make changes it will be fairly easy to modify the text file and paste it into a new book. So if I need to make changes or if we need to add in volumes in between stuff I did, I can go back and make the appropriate changes and a new book.

P.S. I was hoping this would be a project that the rest of the shard would carry on after I got it started. So this thread is abotu 2 days early but this is where I was hoping this would go...

another though I had about this whole history thing. Once I post what I have I think I'll ask Oriana to sticky and lock the thread. Then, anytime someone has additional history posts to make, once they are posted we can get a mod to move them to the same thread. This will give us a history thread that is nothing but posts about the shard history and it can remain locked and stickied.

Just a though, what do you guys think? Oriana, care to speak now before we make more work for you???

Here's a favor anyone can help with for these books, anyone have Red Leaves? Need about 10 maybe 12. If someone could just bring them to the meet-n-greet tomorrow night that would be great.

Crystal, did you do the news reports on Drax 'veltos and the siege of Luna? If so, do you still have it?

Yes, I did the report on Drax'Veltro and I do have a copy of it. Actually, I have several of the reports I did on the ongoing event. Maybe a few pictures also.

Like i said in the other thread, im not originally from this shard, but i'd love a copy of this stuff for my library. I am genuinely interested, but i dont really have much to offer in return. The only event i've experienced was killing Clainin. And honestly I didnt even see him. I was dealing with other matters at the event.

You can copy whole books in game. Just buy the same type of book and it's use a pen and ink to copy a book. I'll try it and document the instructions. Hope that works cause I've been copying and pasting for hours now and I'm not near done... no way i'm making a spare set of these if the book copy doesn't work anymore... And I really want one for myself.

Cool you can re-write the Drax book and replace mine, I'll put a note in it that everyone should be expecting it soon. :)

In fact this just made me decide not to use volume numbers on the books, think I'll use month and year instead so you and Sara and anyone else can write your own and add them in. The EM's can edit the index and keep it up to date.

Still need Red Leaves someone.

Well they are done. took 17 books, most of which are full or close to it. Still need some Red Leaves to lock them with. If I have time I'll' try to shop Luna before the meet but I have a hard time getting home early enough to make the meetings.

Did the new Scribing Gump stop us from being able to copy books??? There used to be a way for a scribe to copy books? anyone remember how??? I'd really like to make myself a copy of these and after 4 hours of cutting and pasting I'm not about to do that again...

Open your skills list, drag the inscription icon onto your screen, double click the inscription icon, target the master book (book to be copied), target a blank book.
This will work for anyone, however, if you don't have inscription skill, it will take several attempts to make a copy of the book.

Ah! Thank you! My memory is definitely fading, I knew all that once upon a time...

**Now to squeeze in enough time to get 17 more blank book and copy them before the metting.**

Thanks Sara that worked great. I took a break at work and hopped in the game to copy them. In fact I have a low 90's scribe so it was actually pretty easy. Easy enough that I did make Robthemilt a copy as well. Good relations to be nice to visitors. :) So now I have a copy I can keep for myself.

However, I Looked all over Luna and no one has any Red Leaves for sale. All other plant resources but those. Anyone know where I can find some Red Leaves, I need 16 for now.

I took a quick trip to Flora Green's ... picked up 90 red leaves and will bring them to the EM meeting this evening. If that's not soon enough, PM me and maybe we can make arrangements to meet ingame.

I don' think it will work, so you might want to leave what you have in. The articles I wrote I suspect are way to long to fit inside one of the books.

Heh, no excuse. a couple of mine took 2 books and that's after editing them down to be only pertinent information. The one I did on the Origin Assembly is in one book but the accompanying meeting minutes take up 6 books.... :p

Again, take a look at what I turn in and see if you can make it work. Otherwise maybe you can email me what you have and I'll see what I can do with it. Then again, what I have already might just be good enough.

I will see what you have tonight hopefully. The only problem is that you suggested that they all be done in the same type of format and I dont know what format you used. I wrote my articles in story form so they may be way different from what you expected.
