Why Compassion is being removed from the Haven quests?. I do compassion regularly with all my chars and it has been useful for my non-gating chars to get it at Haven and at least be able to pick up any NPC and do the quest.

I first did Compassion years ago and it was tedious then to have to go to specific towns and find NPCs that needed to go to specific towns to do the Virtue so, with the removal of this ability from Haven it will be necessary to do it this way again and just to make it a little more tedious Magincia is no longer able to be used.

For chars who can gate, this quest has always been an easy thing, with New Haven it brought some equality to non-gaters to do the same. Now someone in their wisdom has decided this near equality shall be removed, Why?.

I have never seen any requests for this to be done and for the life of me I cannot conceive of why it should be necessary, when the usefulness of Bags of Sending was removed from the game it made some sense, but this?, perhaps I am missing something but this seems much more to me to be 'Oh look that aint broke, lets fix it'.

I am becoming increasingly disillusioned with the way things are introduced to UO recently it. In so many cases now it seems to be what is introduced is not what we want, or ask for, but what someone thinks we should have. For me a particularly glaring example of this is KR, no real consultation before with players just an issue of what was thought we should have. Well what a great success that has been. Frankly I despair for the future of UO, albeit as a total addict I shall no doubt persevere to the bitter end.

I think we did this already in another thread. I don't know that anyone had a reason why it's being done, but they had solutions...

Best solution in terms of irony and easiest is:
kill the named deer nearish the maze and gain in compassion.

Old haven you could do 5 per day, is that right? That seems cool. I don't bother with it. WHat does it do? Gives life energy upon rezzing someone? I use heal after rezzing someone. Is that low brow? Like... "Oh, he doesn't grind compassion. He is low brow."

THey have some people in a focus group so I think they are messing a lot of this stuff up now. A lot of complainers about certain things that bother them personally but doesn't take into account the rest of the playerbase. Probably in the focus group, one or 5 people have ideas and the rest say "That is a good idea, what he said." Then DF gets changed for the worse, compassion is changed for no apparent reason, dragons get a smack on the hand at the new content sites, we get a turn in, etc. I have no clue if that's how it works, but these changes happened relatively recently with no good explanatations, so there is what, correlation (direct?) or unrelated but timeing is similar (indirect?).

Also, that addict part at the end is the same with me. But what an addiction as long as we remember to eat, we will be fine. BEats gambling, smoking, drug use, alcoholism, sleeping, any other addiction. So much cheaper and maybe our reflexes are better? My eyesight will be worse, but who cares about that?

KR was talked about at the town halls. There was (is?) video on youtube with all the fanboi vets saying "OOH! AHHH! Amazing!" Then it gets released and its "EWW!! OHHH!! Disgusting!!" Oh well.

Joyous you ok?

Short Answer: People have been using the NPCs in haven to get easy compassion. Unlike the ones in other towns, the escorts in and near new haven only wanted to go somewhere in new haven. Meanwhile, all those other NPCs in other towns go unescorted because why would someone waste time going from town to town when they can get the same compassion for walking one of the NPCs in haven from the front gate to the dock.

It was cheap and effective but the npcs in haven were designed to help new people learn the town and the fact that they gave compassion was a bug that was being abused for a long time. Was it a big deal? Not at all but i suppose in the never ending quest to sew up all the holes in this game, that one was coming sooner or later.

my thought are they dont want u to town sit they want you to go out and find them in the game like the orc spawn and such its kinda like reason they made most monster tuffer to make u need a team and promote group action sides peps able to write scripts to go to same location over and over is a good idea

In reply to some of the above, if you have a mage going to ANY of the locations finding an NPC and doing the escort takes maybe a minute or less. If your char cannot gate, at least going to Haven meant you could do the same quest in a little longer but still comparatively easily.

If once full Knight of Compassion had been reached you permanently retained the rank there would be no problem but, as there is this rather stupid system of gradual decay to keep it you have to regularly do escorts.

I have 12 chars and all are full Knights and so I have to do escorts at regular intervals, removing the Haven Compssion simply means I will now have to spend more game time doing a monotonous task for no apparent purpose.

Enabling non-gaters to do the quest in Haven reduced wasted time but, as so often happens 'we cant have this lets nerf it'.

In answer to the 'res and heal' reply, in a hectic situation ressing a friend which also gives them 80% of hit points is instant and can be a life saver.

So far I have seen nothing which answers my original question.

From my understanding, when new haven was introduced, it used the same code for escorts as all the others.

In the original haven the escort code was different and was not givenig compassion then, when the code was written for new haven they basicly recycled the escort code, createing the bug in which the haven escorts gave compassion

im just using my own theory here....

Perhaps the change to the new haven compassion givers is to allow us to finally use one of the other virtues??? Maybe the humility? I forget which one at this moment, but the one that helps new players anyway. Thats just my thought.

compassion is awesome to have ... and not just for your friends .

when your in a heavy spawn area more likely than not your gonna be low on mana . to have someone pop up almost full health can make the difference between whether they live or whether you gotta waste a bunch of mana resin' them again .
besides you might get invited along to more places if poeple know you have that ability.

also consider a warrior resing with noble sacrifice . not only can you be the savior of your entire party , instantly ALL of your friends are back to near full health. (quite impressive)

and ill let you in on a tactic i use on my warriors.

get together a lower mana cost suit with a few items of mana increase . (with enough lmc you can gate at around 34 mana) then get a spellbook with 15 magery and 2 15 magery jeweles .
you now have 45 magery. a gate scroll will work with any magery over 40 .
set your runebook to default whatever location they want . double click a scroll and target your book. it may take a few tries but then there you go, ANYONE gan gate.

ideally if you can also work some mana regen into that suit it will get him up for the gate home sooner.

edit = poeple resing on bandaids dont need to wory so much about mana i guess . but still ... resing someone at near full health means you can just go do what you do . not stand there waiting for annother bandage to kick in and hope your friend doesnt get hit again while hes low .

Thank you all for your replies. However none actually answer my question so it would seem nobody who has read it can give me any reason whatsoever for the change let alone a good reason.

The suggestion they just used an old code for the NPCs is probably correct. Nevertheless as the present situation hurts nobody but just makes it a little easier for non-gaters to gain Compassion. It is actually the reasoning behind the need for change which interests me. Change for change sake?. Who is it looking at the game and deciding we need this type of change?. I find the situation baffling to say the least.

The need to fiddle with this kind of thing and largely leave scripters and dupers to do their own thing suggests to me they would be better employed redirecting their efforts.

Here's a good reason: Because sometimes things are just harder.

Its easier for my Mage to sacrifice her fame daily than my Blacksmith, he is not a warrior of any type, it's just not going to happen very easily.

Its easier for my dexxer to gain honor.. blah blah blah you see where im going with this I hope.

They made a mistake and now its fixed. I'll be missing it myself but still... it was just too easy.

You mean this answer doesnt suit you? Or it sounds right but you dont want to hear it?

Its been stated in many other threads just like this that its still extremely easy to get compassion quests, with or without the use of magery and gates.
