If you have to pick just one, go with Chiv especially for an archer who can only use what 2 of the Bushido abilities?

Go with both if at all possible. You really only need about 90 chiv to be effective and the 120 points you put into Bushido will take your archer to another level in pvm.

By honoring an opponent and using lightning strike you get to do increddable amounts of damage to your opponent. You also get max HCI without having to worry about expensive weapons and items.

With confidance you get a great way to heal yourself fully and quickly at almost no cost to you.

I started playing a chiv archer but added Bushido just to use some cool Samouri Empire bows. With the boost I got from the skill I maxed out Bushido and haven't looked back.

The max you get from honoring and using lightning strike on an opponent is 20% chance at a critical with 120 bushido, also your DI is boosted every time you don't miss against an honored opponent up to I think a 100% cap. While these are nice bonuses they don't take into account its not exactly easy to honor your opponent, and if you don't get the honor thats 120 points of skills to get 50 hci with lightning strike. In doom its a race to honor the dark fathers as only one player can honor any given target. Auto-attack will block your honoring as well, and with most aggressive creatures auto attack is triggered when you're getting close enough to honor. I've also run into the ever annoying "cannot find path" when trying to honor a creature. I can see at the upper end if you manage to honor your target it is nice, but to me its not worth the points that could be put into more tactics/anatomy for higher base damage and better heals, as well as other skills usually left off or very low that can help an archer like focus and or med. Lastly it seems to me honoring as an archer/caster is against the whole concept of honor this straight from the UO how to gain honor:

Honorable combat is defined as:

Allowing your opponent to damage you first.
Engaging in one-on-one combat.
Not using ranged weapons, unless you stay in the same spot where you honored your opponent, or you only damage your opponent while adjacent to them.
Not allowing your pets or summoned creatures to help you during the battle.
Avoiding the use of poison.

Yet you can move and shoot/cast, use pets, not allow yer opponent to damage you first, and use poison, and have friends help you kill the target and still gain honor....... Seems pretty honorable to me.......

to the OP- Use both if you have the skill points available. I only use 75 Chiv on my archer, and have 120 Bushido. The damage output possible from Bushido is very high, which adds up to very high leeches, especially when crits land. With Bushido on top of Chiv, the 250+ damage hits are a regular occurrance.

To Reymar-

"While these are nice bonuses they don't take into account its not exactly easy to honor your opponent, and if you don't get the honor thats 120 points of skills to get 50 hci with lightning strike"

If you're not finding it easy, then you probably just need more practice at it. Try dragging the health bar off the creature you're fighting and using that to honor instead of targeting the creature itself. It's very easy to do this if you keep the creatures at the edge of your screen.

"In doom its a race to honor the dark fathers as only one player can honor any given target."

Then don't honor them. With a good Demon slayer heavy, you're doing more DoT than any other weapon, and actually hit the damage cap without honor. Also, it's usually the numbnuts that "race" to honor the DF that end up bringing ALL of the DF's up, and end up dying right at the beginning, thus losing time and damage that could be done in that time. It's better for the meleer's to honor the DF anyway. They're the ones you want drawing aggro, not yourself.

" Lastly it seems to me honoring as an archer/caster is against the whole concept of honor this straight from the UO how to gain honor:
"Honorable combat is defined as:"
"Not using ranged weapons, unless you stay in the same spot where you honored your opponent"

Have you tried standing in the same spot against a succubus, or any other high end creature? Have you tried working up to Knight of Honor? It's not easy.

Connor, on the Dark fathers, how are you hitting the damage cap without honoring and lighting striking for the crits? Aren't the big hits relying on the DI buildup from honor and getting crits from LS?

On standing and fighting as an archer, I think you missed my point. I don't expect any non-melee type to stand and fight, I was pointing out that Honor has nothing to do with being honorable, they really should change it to Valor since it's just about "tagging" and killing big creatures.

"Connor, on the Dark fathers, how are you hitting the damage cap without honoring and lighting striking for the crits?"

Slayer + Max DI= 200% Damage

EoO gives another 50% of damage done so, 50% of 200% would equal 100%.

200% + 100%= 300% Damage, which is the cap. Unless my math is wrong here somehwere, which I don't believe it is since I see zero difference between Honored and not Honored, this formula would apply to anyone with a slayer and max DI.

I do use LS for the crits and the HCI since the crits DO give the additional damage amount. I've found that when I do though, mages tend to start invising me because I draw so much aggro. This is why I say it's better for meleers to get the Honor so they can maintain a higher level of aggro. A DF fight is much harder and longer when the DF is running around chasing archers instead of staying in pretty much the same spot with the meleers.

"Aren't the big hits relying on the DI buildup from honor and getting crits from LS?"

There is no DI buildup from Honor since the 300% DI cap applies. I hit for the exact same amount on crits whether I honor or not.

So in essense you've said what I thought might be true, you don't need bushido to dish out the heavy damage. I was thinking with a composite using armor ignore it's near the same as the benefit from a critical hit. Critical hit ignores armor and does max damage 120 bushido=20% chance, Armor Ignore ignores armor and does your normal damage (which from what I've seen is only a 7 point variable at most so 14% chance at max). Obviously Bushido is the way to go for peerless since fey slayer isn't available on a bow, yet....

Thanks for the doom input Connor, I haven't run my abc archer there yet as I've mostly been doing peerless where at gm bushido my LS criticals have been less than impressive for the 100 points invested.

Ditto. I had gm Bushi on a stone, so for the heck of it, I put it on my archer. And, same for me, haven't looked back. All my bows I use have high percentage mana leech, so I can continually spam LS and Specials. I like composite bows for AI. I made this template specifically for Doom after the changes, and let me tell ya, the damage output is incredible! At 120 Bushi, I get ALOT of crits and hit the DF for over 200 pts consistently, crits for even more! I tear up rooms 3 and 5 with LS, crits and AI. I always skip room 4 no matter what template I'm playing-- hate those buggers!

I've never tried to solo a peerless on my archer, but I would suspect it's do-able with the right gear, etc. If you have a tamer buddy with a Hiryu or one of the new dragons, you can go to the Grizzle. I went in there the other night with a friend and his hiryu. Hiryu tanked and I just sat back and shot --- Honored opponent, EoO, LS (crits) and AI -- with a constantly full mana pool and never got hit once. Griz was down in 10 mins. I think this is gonna be my new gig for a while. It was great fun!
