Building Multi-Faceted Tamer .... Need Advice

I'm turning my attention towards working on my Tamer .... I have lot's of skills on Soulstones plus I've been imbuing all sorts of different combo's of Jewelry/Armor/etc .....

I am looking to have a Dual Personality Tamer .... one set of skills/armor/etc for when I am only Taming Animals .... and a second set for when I am out Hunting.

For now I'd like to concentrate on the Tamer that is only looking to go out and tame animals ....

I was starting to work on this template ..... I started to create jewelry and armor ...

Animal Lore 120
Animal Timing 120
Musicianship 120
Peacemaking 120
Veterinary 120
Discordance 112.6
Magery 106

Then while I was looking at the set of skills it dawned on me ... why do I have 120 Vet on a character that isn't going to be healing any pets ... or at least I don't think he will (I'm not a true veteren Tamer)

So I thought it's best to put this out there to the "True Tamers" and get some discussion going about what I am trying to do ....

So PART 1 .....

What skills and how many points of each should I have on a Tamer that will only be used to Tame Pets? Don't worry about balancing out at 720 ... like I said I have lots of skills on SoulStones and my tamer has 120 Caps in lots of stuff?

And PART 2 .....

Since I am going to be Imbuing my Jewelry/Armor/etc .... what Magical Properties are the best for ths Tamer?

Again ... please stick with a Tamer that will not be figthing with a Pet only Taming one ... we'll work on the Tamer/PVM'er later ..

Thanks for any Help .... Antony :mf_prop:

If it is a Tame Only character then with the current tamable mobs, a Tameing of 115 and a Lore of 110 should give you good results.

Fill out the rest according to what your going to do.

Peace Tameing *Shrug* Music 110/Peace 120 (you can check in the Bard Forum)

Discordance for Taming is ... well controversial and I will leave it at that.

EvalInt and Magery bring Para Taming to the Template.

Hiding and Stealth or the variant Low Hiding (low 30's), Invis (the spell) and Stealth (80ish) brings walking around stealthed to the Template.

Herding? *Shrug* Ask the Herders.

Just some thoughts.

Just for fun

Animal Lore 110
Animal Timing 115
Musicianship 110 (Check with the Bards about the Music and Peacing)
Peacemaking 120
Veterinary 0
Discordance 0
Magery 110
EvalInt 110
Hiding 34
Stealth 100

+9.6 left over

If you have the scrolls then perhaps throw the 9.6 into magery and evalint.

Thanks for the reply ..... I'm open for any suggestions for what skills to have.

What I need advice on is exactly that ... what skill template makes for the most effective tamer.

When Peace Taming, Disco (at 120.0) is very important since it makes it much easier to Peace the target. However Honor Taming is more effective. However (again) I have all Bard skills available to all my Tamers. Use as needed!

When Taming, Vet is only appropriate if you use your ride to beat down the target. Use Enhanced Bandages with 110 Vet to Vet at 120.0.

uoBuoY,

Thanks ... I've been searching/reading, searching/reading, and I sure have been seeing lots comments about the effectiveness of "Honor" and Taming.
So much so that last night I went out and picked up a bunch of Scrolls for my Tamer to eat so I can transfer the skills to him that he will need to make him an effective melee fighter. From there it's off the work on Honor.

I found a few articles that explain how Honor Taming works ... does anyone know of any source of what to train honor on? You know like the typical training guides that say from here to here train on these and then here to here train on these .... I'll keep looking too.

Thanks ......

I think you will want to have the ability to bring Vet, Tame, Lore all to 120 wiht jewels for the stable slots, but they will not all need ot be to these levels just to Tame.

I think you can get away with stealth at 80 if you have all leather armor (can check the thief forums)

I think that honor taming is a very good way to go, so maybe a suit/template that allows you to use a melee skill. This will get you better honor gains than using a pet or magery.

Then switch this out for taming or for your actual animal controlling in PvM or PvP.

Honor Taming is typically not used to train the skill (as your question suggests). The Honor Virtue is used to keep monsters from attacking you for a period of time, allowing you to attempt to tame the beast in relative safety (from it and others). The duration of this effect, when evoked on yourself, is determined by your level of Honor (higher=longer). You can find more information about the Honor Virtue here:
http://uo.stratics.com/php-bin/show_content.php?content=30532
Honor is gained by using the Honor Virtue on the foe prior to fighting them. The higher fame the monster has, the more Honor you will gain once you defeat them. Balrons, Succubi, Demons, and Miasma have high fame and will get you over halfway to Knight status.

Honor takes some time to gain and lasts only a few minutes at high levels, which makes it impractical to use while training Taming (since you will be taming for longer than a few minutes at a time). It is convenient to use when taming tough creatures or in tough areas, but not required. I've used it once to tame a Rune Beetle, only because a Yamadon would not leave me alone, despite multiple attempts to draw it away.

As for your equipment for a "Tame Only" Tamer, you will want high resists (max for the monster's damage types, ie cold and energy for a Cu Sidhe), so you can take a few hits. Try to max your DCI (45%) so they don't hit you as often. Anything else (LRC, LMC, MR, etc...) is up to you based on how you want to play, but won't effect the taming of the monster. HPR is a "nice-to-have" but wont help too much. If you are relying on HPR to heal you while you tame high-end monsters, you will die alot.

A suggestion for training Taming...

If you can, train by Taming critters you want in your stable...Kits, Runes, Mares, Cus. Train skill and find keeper pets!

We're we are at so far

Based on replies and my readings I've decided to start working on Honor.

I threw some scrolls on my Tamer, moved over some Warrior Type Skills (Swords, Tactics, Anatomy, Healing, Chivalry) imbued some armor and jewelry, and used some Artifact stuff from other Characters.

He's now at:

Anatomy 120
Focus 120
Swordsmanship 110
Tactics 108
Healing 104.6
Chivalry 100

Strength 125
Dexterity 70
Intelligence 100

I had to imbue mods to make his swing speed a little better and turn his Katana into a "Slayer", Use alot of "Enemy of One" and "Consecrate Weapon" but after one day I'm up to 8 dots. I have to say that Honor seems to advance fairly quickly so far .... from hearing people say that the last dot is hard to come by I guess we'll see.

Question ... does Honor decay over time or do you loose any when you die?

Once I get all 10 dots for Honor I'll switch Thayos back to Tamer mode and we see where we go from there.

I have to say that although imbuing my have it's limitations (kinda expensive unless you farm all your own ingrediants) it sure lets you (used along with Soulstones) tailor your Characters many differents ways any time that you want.

PLEASE :thumbup1: keep the suggestions/advice coming .... I'd like to use this thread as sort of a journal of how Thayos comes along.

Well I'm confused

So this morning right after Server Up I went back to work on my Honor Virtue.

I didn't take too long for me to be at 9 dots .... so I keep on going.

All of a sudden I get a message something like I've completed my Path of Honor .... or something about Honor .... I go to check the dots ...

They are ALL RED Again .... like I've never started.

I did notice though that the "Chalice" is pink or purple or something and it says I am a Seeker of Honor when I mouse over it.

Is this how it's supposed to work? Is there like "Multiple" Stairs of Honor that you need to "Climb"? If so, what will it say when I mouse over it when I am where I need to be?

Help

I Think I'm seeing this a little clearer

I found this

Virtuous Titles:

Each virtue has three steps on the path to enlightenment, each more difficult to attain than the last. Upon reaching each step, you will be given a new Virtue title, which is displayed when you mouse over the Virtue’s associated symbol (in this case, the Chalice of Honor) in the Virtue Gump.

So if I'm reading this right there ARE three "steps" or "tiers" ... is that correct?

Right now when I mouse over the chalice I get "Seeker of Honor" ... this must be the 1st "Tier". And I'm seeing that each Tier is harder than the previous one ... I knew that this was too easy :gee:

So what are the other two Tiers (if that's how it works) AND where do I need to get to in order for "Honor Taming" to be any help?

Thanks again ALL ....

Found Some More ....

I don't mean to be answering my own questions but maybe theirs someone else out there that the info will help too ....

I found this ..... looks like there are 3 levels like they said

1st level = Seeker of Honor (this is where I am)
2nd level = Follower of Honor
3rd level = Knight of Honor

Is that correct? Like I asked previously "Where do I need to be to have Honor help my taming?"

Are there any charts/info around that tells me the times/effects that each level/dot of Honor will have in keeping a Beast from attacking me?

I have only had maybe 3 to 4 dots of honor on my tamer at any one time. I invoke the virtue on myself when I find a greater dragon that has the skills and resists that are better than the one I am using. It lasts for around 30 seconds, which is enough time for about 2 full taming attempts. On my warrior at full honor, it lasts for about a minute. I also use spellweaving on my tamer, and with a level 6 focus ethereal voyage lasts for about a minute. So, if I do not tame the critter using ethereal voyage I'll use an honor dot. At 115 or higher taming and lore you should succeed in taming the critter. As for my advice on training taming I would use your melée toon to dispatch bulls until you get to 100 or so. After about 110 almost everyone just settles for ggs gains.

Clarification

I went back and looked at my 1st post and realized that the way I worded it was a little misleading/confusing ....

Here's where my Tamer Thayos is right now "real skills"
Peacemaking ... 120
Musicianship ... 115
Animal Taming ... 100
Animal Lore ... 104
Veterinary ... 100
Discordance ... 98.6
Magery ... 81

With the Jewelry that I crafted/imbued they are this ...
Animal Lore 120
Animal Timing 120
Musicianship 120
Peacemaking 120
Veterinary 120
Discordance 112.6
Magery 106

What I want to figure out is this
How do I split these skills (plus any others that would be good to have) into two templates ... One Template that is used solely to Tame, and a Second Template that would be used to Hunt with Pets.

An example of this may be that "Veterinary" would not be needed to Tame but would be needed to hunt. If there are any other skills that I should throw in with either of these templates, let me know ... like maybe stealth/hiding for the Tamer, or maybe spellweaving/bushudo/evaluate int/provocation (only guessing with all of these) for the Hunting with a Pet.

Also ... when imbuing Armor/Jewelry what mods are the one to have ... maybe different ones for each template.

I'd like to end up being able to switch armor/jewelry/skills and be able to have a strong character for each of these roles.

Re: Clarification

Ok...for a pet taming character I'd suggest the stealth shepherd option, as it enables you to move easily around spawns loring them, stealth herd them somewhere quiet and tame them. Generally speaking while my bards always get their own pets I find that my stealther is simply better placed to deal with awkward spawns.

The template I run as my main tamer is this:

120 tame
120 lore
120 vet (could swap for 100 eval and put the 20 into stealth)
100 magery
100 hiding
100 herding
rest in stealth + a few stealth items to boost up if necessary.

I use my disco bard tamer for hunting and training pets, so that's where I'd divert the barding skills to. You might want to peace tame at times, but as peace won't work for long on the highest end pets, I'd say keep it available on soulstones for your disco tamer to slot in and work with as required :)

As for honor... well I'm going to be different and suggest that actually you don't need honor on your tamer. If you want to take the time to build it up and maintain it, it's handy to have, of course. You may want to be able to use it when a really good pet spawns for example. But all you really need to get started is some lead taming practice, decent resists on your armor and a supply of orange petals to protect you from casters blocking your heals with poison ;)

The only time Honor diminishes is when you use it...the only virtue that doesn't decay (I believe).

You gain the most Honor from high Fame creatures and this LINK lists creatures by Fame. The bottom of the list has the highest FAME. Pick the highest Fame creature you can kill fairly quickly

Ethereal Voyage question

I found this in a post while I was searching around

"Spellweaving Ethereal Voyage" has same effect as honor though does not last as long ..." the post went on to talk about casting Ethereal Voyage 1st ... and timing it (I guess it always lasts the same amount of time) and just before the effect wears off "Honor Yourself" .... this extends your taming window ... sounded like a decent idea ... got more reading to do.

I have 100 Spell Weaving on a Soul Stone ... anybody out there have any experience with using this combo ...

So I could have 120 Taming, 120 Lore, 100 Spell Weaving (if higher makes Ethereal Voyage last longer I could imbue +20 to make it 120) as a starting 3 ... this would be only when I'm "Taming", not "Hunting"

Also an update on Building Honor .... now that I am in the 2nd Tier, fillling those little dots is coming allot slower. I'm up to the 4th .... I've been using Toxic Sliths .... I'd say it takes maybe 25 - 30 to gain a dot at this level. I don't play non stop ... an hour at a time pretty much. I'm getting there.

According to the Complete Hunter's Guide, a Toxic Slith's fame is currently unknown. You might get better gains with known high fame critters.

If you want to finish Honor in a day, go after Balrons in Hythloth or Succubus in the Fan Dancer Dojo. There is one in the 2ndl level by herself with minor spawn surrounding her.

But The Balron on the 3rd level of the Dojo 'should' get you there in a day.

What the best skills set and strategy to use against either of these.

Right now I'm not what you would call a "Kick Butt" Swordsman

Anatomy 120
Focus 120
Swords 110
Tactics 108
Healing 104.6
Chivalry 100
Magery 81
Str 125
Dex 69
Int 100

I have lots of fairly strong characters and lots of stuff on Soulstones ... tell me what I need to be for either of those two and I'll see what I can put together ...

Thanks ... Antony :danceb:

I just checked my Tamer ... with the caps that he has I can create a pretty nice archer .... but I had heard that Archers weren't all that good for building honor.

I can make him

Archery 120
Tactics 120
Anatomy 120
Focus 120
Healing 104.6
Magic Resist 100
Chivalry 80

What do you think?

Are you planning on swapping out the dex skills for taming skills after you are a Knight of Honor?

I like to use a Necro Swords for fighting big monsters. Curse wep, and a Soul Seeker is nice. And it helps to chug and eat apples when needed. Also to have bandaids (like a bazillion of them).

But to make it a whole lot easier, tame a dragon, train it up on Daemons, and that will get you a level 2 Honor with a few dots.

Yes .... my plan is to swap everything (skills, jewelry, armor) over to "taming type stuff" after getting honor.

I've got some questions about this Honor thing. It looks like I've hit a stone wall. I decided to go as far as I could on Toxic Sliths before chaning over to something else. I'm on the 2nd Level of Honor with 4 blue dots. Everytime I kill another toxic it says I've gained honor BUT I must have killed over a 100 of them and I'm still at 4 dots.

Does each dot get harder than the previous one, even within the same level, or are all the level 2 dots the same, meaning I should have to kill the same number of Toxics to get each one? OR does it mean that even though it says I get Honor I have MAXED OUT what I can get on Toxics. I was kinda thinking that when you couldn't get anymore it would stop saying you got honor.

Thanks ... as usual .... Antony

I assume you need a certain number of Honor points to gain a dot...let's say 20,000 (no one knows for sure). It's likely (no one knows for sure) that when you started with Toxic Sliths you gained 1,000 Honor points per kill but now you're gaining only 1-10 Honor points because you're higher up the Honor chain. you need to move to a creature that has higher Fame. I know for sure that White Wyrms will take you to 2.6 Honor. See the LINK I posted earlier for high Fame creatures.

Thanks uoBuoY,

Well I took the plunge and converted over to a Tamer Template .... I'm playing around with different skills but I always base them off of 120 Taming, 120 Veterinary, and 120 Animal Lore ..... I had a couple of Stabled/Bonded Cu Sidhe's and I'm using one of them to kill Artic Orge Lords ....

LOTS Quicker ..... I have 6 Blue Dots on the Second Level (I guess thats 1.6) .... we'll see how they go for awhile .....

I played with Magery with 120 Eval Int for awhile and kinda decided that it didn't make sense .... I just about never get hit (only when I'm sloppy) and the Cu Sidhe does a much better job than even Flame Strike (and that's with around 30% increased spell damage)

What's the general feeling about magic resist on a Tamer? Is it worth taking a slot for? I have 98.6 Discordance and 120 Music on Soulstones .... I may play with those a little .... I kinda thinking that there's no need to my Character to have any offensive skills and relying on my Pets ... what's everyones thoughts on that?

Thanks ..... Antony

If i'm hunting/fighting and not taming, i put on my med/eval to go with the magery. If i had room, i'd squeeze on resist too. If i have a buddy tamer with vet, i'd swap out the vet for resist, no prob. I just don't see the need to have resist on unless you are really sloppy (like making everything on the screen target you) or are pvping.

If i'm hunting big game, like paragon balrons, i'll swap out the peace for the disco and have a friend join with me for the mage heals.

You might hit a wall if you are only doing OL or AOL. So the Succubus or Balrons suggested earlier from other tamers is great to take you to Knight. The Cu would do fine with balrons as long as you use a combo macros of G.heals and vet.
