Britannian Witchcraft Laws

Black Magic, sometimes called Witchcraft, is described as those rituals and abjurations that go far beyond the sanctioned uses of Britannian magic.

In Ultima, magic was banned for centuries, being seen as a tool of the Dark One and the path to daemonic possession. It was not until the ascension of Mondain, and the sorcerers millennial reign, that Lord British lifted the ban on magic, hoping to fight fire with fire. Yet the superstition remained, and outside a number of sanctioned spells and practices, almost all magic was restricted and policed, resulting in out 64 Spell Lexicon.

Necromancers, Daemonologists and other magics seen as suspect were banned outright. But game mechanics sometimes do not always follow the essence of the lore to the letter. Such is the case with Necromancers. Seen as a forbidden art, the practice remains illegal in Britannia, even though Necromancers (and the variant, Samurai Vampire template) are quite common.
