Blacksmith issue....

Just curious if anyone else has had this 'bug' issue with their crafter. I recently ran into the problem (about April 2 or 3) stating that "you do not know how to work this metal" for anything above iron, and this is a legendary smith?!??

Let me know, as I have reported this as a bug, reinstalled my client, had a gm look into it, and there has been no resolution to date.

Thanks

Ouch

Not sure why that would be happening. Mine is working fine.

So then the question is, since I do have mining, not currently on the crafter, but have never ran into this problem....would it seem logical to wipe the character, stone the skills and start a new one?

what other skills have on char and what scrolls and recipies do you have on char

Or Personal Bless Deeds... It would be sad to loose the scrolls, recipes, and deeds associated with a fully developed character.

Hrm, cant remember what skills currently on it, and as far as the recipie scrolls, minimum as I havent done a ton of the crafter quests in Heartwood. The character has the 120 scrolls etc...and yes, losing a fully developed character is the problem here, wiping it out will suck :(

The thing is, when I have been doing BOD's and crafting armor forever and had no issues... No clue!

Or...should I just put the mining back on the character and see what it does? !

if you are doing bods mainly you can get around this in 2 ways either add mining. actuallly you can make a recycle chest secure it and fill it with the rejects and when full log a char with mining and smelting this should not be bad to filling a small number bods at a time. if on cats icq me any evening at 30508991 and i will help you with a lot of the receipies.

you are getting this msg smelting right . it should not be a problem without mining unless you are smelting

Put the Mining back on and see if you can make something.

Just for our collective sanity, could you just give an example of what exactly you attempt to make when you get this error?

When trying to make anything...from basic gauntles to leggings to shields.

Anytime I try to manually smelt anything, or use a recycle bag, or make anything, I get the 'cannot blah blah' message, as if I had 0 Smithing skill.

Grrrr! Absolutely odd since this is a totally new development overnight and nothing on my account or character changed.

Thanks everyone for your insight, apparently I am the only one in the world of UO experiencing this fenomena!!

You need to put mining on the character and smelting/recycle bag will work.

Mining has always been required to smelt items made from higher metals. This isn't new.

Now if you are saying you cannot CRAFT any items from higher metals, then that is a unique or new problem I've never heard of before. I'll have to try it when I get home.

I definitely wouldn't wipe the character. Even if you can stone the skills, you can't stone the Str, Dex, or Int.

no as we all said way you just descibed it is because can not smelt without mining. in order to smelt must have mining same as you do the required skill to mine the try of ore using . if a valarite ringmail gloves need 99 mining to smelt it. putting back gm mining will solve it completely putting on 90 mining will let you smelt all but verite and valarite . 65 mining allows you to smelt dull 70 shadow 75 cooper 80 bronze 85 gold 90 agaphite 95 verite 99 valorite

You still have not mentioned which metals you were trying to work at the time.

For instance, if you are referring to iron...then I'd be worried. :)

It's been around for at least 5 years. I didn't smith much from 2000 until 2004, so I can't speak for that time. Before 2000, there were only iron ingots.

I don't know if this is related or not, but one of our guys had a problem with the carpentry gump last night - there was no wood list, just an error message. Not exactly the same, I know, but I'm wondering if the problem in the OP and the carp gump problem are related to the crafting change they just did with the lumberjack skill etc? I did advise him to put in a bug report, although I couldn't say whether he did or not. Just a thought.
