Napa Valley sir
Don't know the market well there. But I guess if you have a low level character you can hunt in SA dungeon on weaker monsters and sell the ingredients you get on venders.

Thats a very reasonable plan.

Depending on how bored you are, You could grow plants and collect the Seeds of Renewal. They sell VERY well, Only cost would be potion kegs (about 3-5k each on Europa anyway).

There are several ways to make money. The lizardmen idea is a good one but still you need some decent skill to accomplish as they can gang up on you.

Mining is most likely the best way to accomplish some quick money especially if you undercut the scripters. (boat mining the old wall will rake in 10k ingots per hour)

My favorite is using the butchers cleaver killing horses in the pen next to skara stables. Not only can you build up some fighting skill to 70s but you can get a ton of hides. Double hides in Fel too and it's in guardzone.

They all offer reasonable ways. But the problem is leather resources have droped in price multi shard wise and most resources are down. Growing plants is time consuming but the seed of renewals will be worth the effort. Problem with this one is that you will need alchemist or enough gold to buy potions which you will need gold already. So my solution would be the SA monsters like the weaker imps in the abyss to get resources that sell for at least 10 for 150k-400k. This is easy doable for a weaker character with very low investment and a good way to maximize playing time. Remmeber in getting gold your goal is not to make money but to find ways for players to transfer there huge sums of money to you by giving them what they want.

Sounds like a reasonable plan. I'll have to see if I can find these locations you speak of.

Use the imbuing skill to unravel junk loot and sell the magic residue (about 150-200k per 1000 residue) and at 50.1 skill enchanted essence (about 150k per 100 essence).

You can fight pretty much anything, for the low level loot. Equipping items with higher luck will help increase the amount of magic residue you get from each piece. As an added bonus, you aren't stuck in any one area and can make money while you explore, gain skills, and enjoy the game.

---

Though perhaps the best way is capitalism. Buy low and sell high. If you are dedicated, after a couple months you could be a cross-sharding billionaire as you move to more and more rare and expensive items.

Edit: For example: Certain NPCs sell ingots for 8pg each. You can buy 1000 (2 x 500) before the price increases by 1 gp. Then buy the next 1000 ingots at 9gp per and so on. You can sell commodity deeds of ingots in multiples of 1000 for 16-24 gp per ingot.

Find a few NPCs that always seem to sell ingots starting at 8gp, and reset back to 8gp at server up. The blacksmith in Luna sells ingots for as much as 64gp each (or higher), but various tinkers frequently sell their ingots for 8gp.

Once I get to around 80 in my fighting skill I like Solens. You do the Matriarch Quest and get translocation powder which is good to keep or sell. You get quick gold and gems to sell as well. And can easily GM weapon, anatomy, tactics, magery, eval etc
Outside Wind is the easiest place to fight them. You can easily gather a large group or break them into smaller groups.

Boura pelts. Highland bouras are pretty easy for even new players to farm, especially using ranged characters (archer, mage, tamer). Boura pelts are used to imbue resists, which makes them a valuable imbuing commodity. Easy way for a new player to start earning serious gold.

A good and easy way would be to farm pixies for fairy dust and essences in the Stygian abyss. It is often easy to reach since there is one house spot next to that spawn (the owner may have placed a teleporter).

If you are a new player, you may try to kill the wisps too, but they will be harder. But avoid the dark wisps.

If you happen to die, head to the North/West. A few screens upstairs, there is the silver sappling tree that acts like a wandering healer

It depends on what skills you're working on.

If you're building a melee warrior I second the ettins and earth elementals idea.

You can build up your skills in Dungeon Despise against lizardmen in top level, then ettens and earth elementals on the lower level. It's a great way to build skill while collecting decent gold along the way. Earth elementals drop gems as well which you can sell to the jewelers.

You get low end stuff as well that you can sell to npc shoppes or tuck it way for unraveling should you decide to learn the art of imbuing.

Dungeon Shame is also a great place for this when you become adept at melee.

Since lizardmen, ettins, and earth elementals don't cast magic you dont' need a super duper set of armor. The only critical resist is physical so finding armor for this task will be a bit easier and cheaper.

Don't forget escort quests that earn you 500 gold each for zero skills, even in New Haven. A good way of building your first few thousand between killing etc.

Start out just doing escort quests in New Haven, you'd be surprised how fast that gold adds up.

All of you have good suggestions. Though it makes me wonder. Im as old school as all of you but many of these methods are no longer the best way to make gold for a low end player. I can see these maybe have to be taken in Siege but not in public shard like Napa where he said he played. Also makes me think is this why players are still broke and consider 1mil to 10 mil expensive?

For example goblins drop essence of control. Lowest price for these on Napa are 10 for 225k. Goblins are as weak as skeletens and there potion-mage imps are a bit stronger than orc mages. You can average about 10 in 30 minutes or so based on your low level skill. The renown would be the tough one but you can always come back to that one later and head over to the skeleten spawn and fight the low levels or the fairy spawn or the cavern of discarded. As long you don't get bunched up you be fine. Death is part of UO so it's all good. Now this will definetey get you the essence of control and other essence as well as unraveling items and whatever else they might have. But I bring this up because your 10 essense for 225k compared to 450 escort missions or 1k ettins or 1k earth elementals for the same amount there is no comparison for the amount of time it takes.
Armor with all 70's can be had easily after a few trips like this so that will help kill them faster earning you more resources to sell in less time. In 1 month playing time you might not have all your skills maxed but you definetely be multi-millionear especialy if you start using your gold to make more gold with.

Though do what others suggest and kill something different or do escort missions to take a break or other UO things.
Also if you are too weak to fight these then Concentrate on leveling your charaacter. There are planty of guides here to help you level up as quickly as possible. If you want to take your time head to the old lands and kill the animals, ettins, lizardmen for there hides,etc.. Untill you strong enough to get out of there.

When you have physical 70 equipment and are mid range and above you can try the trogs as they do drop alot of gold and items for little time. They won't be better or even close to SA monsters in the money you generate from other players but at least it's a good relaxer and generater of gold. I say 60k per 30minutes? at 1 trog per minute. Wont really make gold of them they just fun to fight a bit.

Powergaming a newbie on a new shard (by Harlequin)

Copied from the the UO tips thread in UO Players Corner http://vboards.stratics.com/showthread.php?t=136673
* Newbie quests in Haven are a very good source of starting skills and blessed equipment eg undead slayer spellbook, blades for cutting corpses, lrc wizard hat. Blessed equipment remain with you even when you die.

1. Use KR (edit, this has been replaced by the SA client now) to create a char, it allows you to pick 4 skills and 120 skill points, plus the dark knight quest. The 2D client only allows you 3 skills and 100 points.
2. For the first char, you will want a scribe mage to make money/mark runes/make runebooks/scribe scrolls. You also want to start off with skills at 49 instead of 50 to take advantage of the newbie quests. The NPCs woun't offer to apprentice you if you already have 50 points in the skill they teach.
3. I like to create a character with 49 scribing, 49 necro (to get the initial necrobook/regs), minimal magery (to get the initial spellbook/reg), any remaining points into chiv (spellbook). Use an elf with maxed-out INT.
4. First thing when you emerge in New Haven, buy a packy. You need it to carry the gold you will be making. Next, find and escort your first NPC. Put whatever you don't need in your bank, and all gold/regs/blank scrolls/scribe pen on you.
5. Accept the focus trainer's quest (she's just next to the bank). Just double click her, read through the instructions on how/where to train and accept her quest. Additional note on the "where" - A gong sounds when you enter an enhanced skill gain area that you are eligible for. Also, an icon will show in the buff/debuff list (the one you get when you click the blue button in your character status gump)
6. Make your way to the mage shop up north. Buy out all the blank scrolls and nightshade from the 4 mage vendors there. Remember to buy 1 nightshade for each blank scroll. Don't spend all your gold on blank scrolls, only to find that you have no money to buy nightshade. Accept apprentice quests from both the meditation (3rd floor)and inscription trainers (2nd floor).
7. Stay on the second floor library room where the inscription trainer is in, and start scribing poison scrolls. That 1 point in magery that you started with, gave you a pouch with 30 of each reg, and a spellbook with 12 spells, including a spell called poison. Poison is one of the cheapest spell to cast/scribe. You should hit 50 inscription in a few tries (2 tries if extremely lucky). Double click the inscription trainer to collect your Hallowed spellbook. This book has 1st-5th spell circles all filled and is an undead slayer to boot.
8. You can now do the necro quest or continue scribing until you hit 50 med or 50 focus or the shop keeper runs out of blank scrolls. The latter should happen first. But rememember to collect your rewards from the respective trainers once you hit 50 med (lrc wizard hat) or 50 focus (mana regen bracelet).
9. Once you feel like taking a break (eg shop keeper ran out of scrolls, waiting for mana regen, it's getting old, you've earned your first 10k of gold), you can work on getting a full necro book. Go to the necromancer building east of the mage shop. Accept the necromancy quest.
10. Head out east to the old Haven ruins. You will hear the gong to signify that you are in the right area. The undead here will not aggro you. Equip your undead slayer spell book, then use the necro spell "Pain Spike" to kill the undead. Zombies are the weakest, Skeletons are a bit stronger, Spellbinders are a bit stronger than skeletons because they cast curses. Should take you no time to get from 49 necro to 50 . Now go back to the necro trainer and collect your full necro book.
11. Now you can continue scribing to make more money, train scribing higher level spells, work on the Magery, Resist, Hiding/Stealth/Ninjitsu apprentice quests, or go loot LRC, +skill, resist items from public corpses at popular hunting spots. Once you can cast mark, you can mark runebooks for your other characters and start creating a warrior or even crafter.
Another 0 risk method is to farm shear sheeps in the Yew sheep pens. Bring a couple of pack horse to kill the sheeps so that new ones respawn. The pack horses are useful for holding the wool as well. Then sell the wool at 60+ gp each to the npc tailors/weavers.

Like Ian said. Chat channel or bank or rent a vender at the boulevard for 15-20k a week look for the cheapest ones there. The initual gold he can easily get by trading the items he picked up to the house owner or doing 1 sale on the chat channel-bank. After that the vender will hold it. Also he can set up a vender in a remote location and drop runes. Us resellers are always looking for lower price items to resell at the boulevard. So if he drops the price from 225k to 175k-200k a reseller or more will find his home through the droped runes and mark it down. From then on all he need to do is keep stocked and will always sell out no matter if hes in the farthest reaches of the boomdocks. Though he has to sell cheaper than the main boulevards to get the sales.

Take character with NOTHING on you to Yew Fel...go south of bank to the animal pens.

Use bladed weapon to sheer (click weapon click sheep) the sheep. Then kill the sheep. They will respawn.

Each gives 2 wool which can be sold to the tailors for 50gold or so each. That is 100 gold per sheep with zero risk. The pen is a guard zone so reds can have guards called.

Run the wool back to the bank and stash it (yew bank). Rinse/repeat.

Once you have more fighting skills - goto Fel Delucia and kill cows/bulls and stash leather in the bank. Use butchers war cleaver to cut directly into pack.

Global chat - use General chat channel.

Selling 10k leather for 150k gold. Meet in Luna.
Selling 10 Essance of Control 200k. Meet in Luna.

That should sell your stuff pretty quick. No need for luna vendor anymore. Price below market and spam.

What skills do you have now ? Can make a difference on where you hunt or do..
If a warrior & training it's Despise, lots of spine leather & great skill gains.
If mining under Minoc just below the bank, say Parrot to gain entrance thru the little building/door attached to the small hut. No monsters there at all & nice gains.

There are several questions tied to your request. One of the main questions are:
For what do you need the gold? And how much of it?
My personal advice would be: Dont head for most efficent way to make gold. Simply train your chars and gather what you need as a side effect.
Some of the advices that havent been named in this thread:
- Find out about public/trammel/felucca champ spawns done on your shard. Summoning a horde minion when a champ dies usually results in a very godd amount of gold picked up. (A nearly freshly started necro can cast that. Strat with 49 necro, get the haven starter quest for necro, train to 50 and receive a full necro spellbook. Train some more spirit speak and your done.)
- Train you char at felucca champ spawns. If you are lucky, you can get skill training scrolls from low champ spawn mobs. Depending on the skill, some of those scrolls are really worth a (small/medium) fortune.
- Mining/smithing can bring in good gold too. Thought you might want to get a fire beetle and bond it first. Its so much more comfortable with one. (It takes some time, until you are really ready for doing bods, but POFs are usually selling well.)

Kill! Kill lots and lots of people!! Oh! You mean in game...

Try looking around for houses that are falling on your shard, it can be boring certainly but at times profitable and requires no skill at all!

Just a Lighthearted view from an Elder
From an old fashioned standpoint and the way the game was originally begun ,would be to just go out and play the character. Wander, adventure, learn and absorb all the greatness that was uo .But if you are like most ,in a big hurry then there are a number of ways to gain. Most of these have already been touched on .
But if you are looking for well rounded richness, try it the hard way .

If you can be home in the daytime, get a character to 60-80 magery, get an empty runebook and some runes, and go hunting for idocs, player owned houses that are going to fall down because the players haven't paid for their UO account in over 90 days.

All the items within the house will fall to the ground and will be free to be picked up by anyone passing by.

It's the fastest and easiest way to get rich in UO if you can be home in the daytime when the houses fall.

The Homes and Castles forum had an Idoc FAQ thread if you'd like to learn more.

Ask for handouts. Most players today have more gold than they can spend. You can easily find that 1 generous player that will simply hand you over a check for a mil. I"m not saying be a 24/7 beggar...unless it's working for you.:gee:

It works better than on NPCs, but if you beg, don't be aggressive. The better is just to suggest to the other that you need money. You make him understand you don't have money and give him the urge to help you with that. :)

Reminiscing of a time when a newbie had to kill animals or pick cotton to make some gold. Then I found a silver cutlass of ruin! I remember my 1st day of making 50k in 4hrs on liches with that sword, and tipping 1k for a repair and feeling like a big shot.

Anyways back to the OP. Demons are good source, try to get some imbuing though, the real money is in the imbuing ingredients.
