What are the best 1 and 2 slot tank pets. I know the mare is good for 2 slot wondering if anything out preforms it!

I love my mare and it will never be replaced but what I would say will beat it is the Bake Kitsune. The only thing that the mare beats it on is that you can ride it. The Bake Kitsune is a better damage dealer for 2 slots but can't be ridden.

Well Im a new gargoyle tamer and my old method for taming 3 slots was to use a mare beat it down to low hp and hop on the mare ...

Now however that might be a problem. What Im looking for is the best 1 slot and 2 slot tank critters. Not so much for damage but survivability.

I tried the raptor and well its a little weak on the resist and so far I am leaning towards the bake good HP decent resist. Just wondering if there was any other newer creature that might out do it in the tank department.

I would just say then that for a tank the Mare makes a great 2 slot tank. My mare fully trained handles Swoop with very little issues. I am still training up my 3 slot rune beetle and my rune beetle even with higher hps and better resists but only 87 wrestling was more difficult to keep up (not saying i couldn't just saying more healing involved) than my 100 wrestling lower resists lower hp mare. I know once the wrestle gets up to 100 my beetle will be the better tank but just saying my Mare tanks tons of things very well. As you said you can always jump on your Mare to stop the battle.

I have done that with my Mare when I see the battle isn't going the way it should and saves the Mare for another battle.

Without really understanding what you would be tanking it's difficult to say exactly what to go with.

Other two sloters that are decent are the Lowland Boura. It has many more HPs than a Mare, Less Damage capability, Resists are similar but can't be ridden which as a gargoyle isn't an issue. It has pack damage capability which could up it's damage to over a mare but I haven't tested it.

I just started a gargoyle tamer and was going to use a Lowland and a Highland Boura as a pair. Since they have pack damage and the Highland has a stun. Figured the combo would be decent. Haven't done it yet so I can't speak on it. Was going to use it simply to get his fame up for using the forge. So I could move Imbuing onto him and was going to hunt Toxic Sliths for imbuing materials and also for leather.

As far as 1 slotters go there are Hellcats and Frenzied Ostards. I know plenty of tamers that go with a full pack of those and tear stuff up.

A pack of fully trained Frenzied Ostards are a force to be reckoned with. I am not joking about it they truly can tear stuff up. Yes you may lose one or two taking on the big things but even with practice that won't happen as much it's all about the macro's.

My friend has 5 he is training up and they out damage my mare/ beetle combo when I am tanking swoop and they are joining in to help take him down.

So the lowland borua is 2 slots. Hrmmmmm. I assumed it was 3 slot like its cousin the high plains which I have used to great success. I will look into the lowland and see if its capable of replacing the mare.

Also of note I have been using the highland with a wolfspider backup and it dishes out some of the best 2 slot damage ive seen. It far surpasses the raptor which is weird or maybe I didnt train the raptor.

I haven't tried the spider yet but the Bake Kitsune should be an excellent 2 slot damage dealer. Once fully trained it will definately outdamage your Mare. I still love my Mare so it's still the team mate with my Rune Beetle (especially since I don't like to walk).

I still prefer my mares over my kitsunes, for two reasons. Though I understand the kits have higher dex and more mana to dump, over a LONG fight, the mares just seem to have more...endurance and mana? I know it doesn't jive with the stats, but in a protracted fight the mares seem to outperform the kits for me. I don't have hard evidence of that, just observations over hundreds of hours between the two. Secondly, I can ride the mare, so it's quicker to get around. The rune/mare combo is my favorite in game, followed by the rune/kit. I'm finally starting to give banes a fair try, and I do like what I see so far. FWIW.

I'm waiting for a kit to bond just so I can pair it with a bane dragon.
Something in my gut tells me that they'll work as well together as a mare & rune beetle.

The bane being ridable is a nice bonus.
