they have a lot of meat substitutes if you just cant live without it. There are a lot of brands of tvp burgers, sausage, (ground or solid) that you can use. There is a product called "veat" that is pretty good.
Try using more nuts- peanut butter, almonds, walnuts, hazlenuts, pecans- yeah they are high in fat but its good fat anf they have good anti-oxidants and nutrients. Google them.
In some asian cuisines they might substitue eggplant for the meat (as in parmasign (sp?). portebella mushrooms work well too.
If you can/wish to eat fish, try that. COld water fish are particularly good, being high in omega 3's. The fish from the pacific seem to be lower in pollutants, so look for those.
As a rule of thumb, women crave carbs, men crave protein. Make sure you are getting enough. Free-range organic eggs are much lower in chol and higher in om-3's than regular eggs.
Why arent you eating meat? Health issues? Ask about free range stuff. Free range longhorns are as low in fat as turkey breast.
Ive been a veg off an on for various reasons, and have done some reading. Whenever you cut out any portion of our omniverious diet, you have to make sure you are making up those lost nutrients from somewhere else. You need to read up.
If it is just a personal choice, watch your health. Believe it or not, some people have actually been TOLD to eat meat, because their bodies needed nutrients readily available from it. Everybody is different.
When I get a craving for something "solid", I grab a handful of the aforementioned nuts, olives, a protein drink (no-sugar low fat vanilla protein powder, 1 cup 1% milk, and a bannana or a half cup frozen blueberries- you'd never believe it isnt bad for you, its so good lol), or something high in protein and with some good healthy fats. If your cholesterol is high- dont be afraid of fats- the healthy ones actually help lower your bad chols.
If you are eating out, I find the best restaurants are ethnic ones. Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Italian, and Mexican restaurants have great veggie meals that you can learn from and remake at home.
Hope any of this helps. Pm or icq me if you want to ask or talk more
