can anyone tell me or direct me to an area where I can find what the threads do? I found about 20 in an idoc .... thread of life, thread of fate, etc.

Check UO Guide. Its involved in a quest for rubble.

Personally, I thinks its all silliness, but then some people really seem to get into it.

The threads are rumored to have a future use, but currently, they can be turned on to the yellow NPC at the magincia moongate as part of a quest - you get a piece of new rubble as a reward.
